One night, I was reading a book on sharks to my eight-year-old daughter. We discovered that sharks have a scientifically-proven sixth sense. They actually have an additional sensory organ called the ampullae of Lorenzini in their snout. This allows them to identify prey even if the fish is buried in the sand. I still remember sitting on the couch, reading her this shark book, as the premise for The Rook took root in my mind.
The entire story grew out of this encounter, and then a trip to the world's number-one aquarium (Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg, TN), where an aquarist took me on a behind-the-scenes tour. There, I saw the acclimation tank, which became the scene of the climax of the novel.
As you read this story, think of me reading to my daughter. Because of that moment, this is one of the most special books in the series to me.
This novel ends with a triple twist that I had no idea would happen when I began writing the story. Don't peek at the last page.

Thriller Writing at its Highest Level

FBI Agent Patrick Bowers is baffled by his latest case in San Diego. An arsonist has been wreaking havoc on the city leaving no clues as to motive or identity. Meanwhile, a shark researcher from a local aquarium has been kidnapped by a sadistic madman who has only given Bowers a few hours to save her. The only clue left behind is a shocking video clip that reveals the torture the victim is enduring. Patrick races against time to not only save an innocent life, but also to apprehend the monster responsible.

Meanwhile, both cases take a startling turn when a top secret research facility is burned down at a nearby naval base. When the culprit is apprehended, more connections to both cases are brought to light. Soon Bowers discovers a device that was stolen from the naval base, and is shocked when its purpose is revealed. As more and more answers surface Patrick realizes he is in the middle of a grand conspiracy with far reaching implications. He must find the truth at all costs and try to stop the mastermind behind it all, the ever elusive Shade.

Steven James hooked me with his debut, The Pawn. Now in this explosive sequel he has absolutely blown me away. The Rook is thriller writing at its highest level. James is a top-notch storyteller that knows exactly how to hook readers with complex storylines, unexpected plot twists, and engaging characters. While reading The Rook, I was reminded of the works of Michael Connelly, James Patterson, and Harlan Coben among others. Yes, this guy is that good!

Patrick Bowers is now becoming one of my favorite literary characters and James does a masterful job of portraying a man who is both a genius in his profession and a novice as a father. Patrick's relationship with his step-daughter, Tessa, is emotional and real, bringing a welcome dose of family values and heart to the story. While Patrick and Tessa both struggle with their faith, their search for meaning and hope is heartfelt and inspiring.

Steven James is continuing to prove what an amazing talent he is. This one is not to be missed!

All the Right Moves? Or Made in Shade?

When Steven James threw "The Pawn" at us, it sent us reeling, and it slammed home! We met Patrick Bowers, watched his showdown against "The Illusionist," and we were amazed. Now Bowers is back in action, and the military is involved, and secrets just might be revealed! Steven James slam dunks this one, and sends the pieces flying everywhere. Do you think you're ready for "The Rook"? I was convinced I'd see everything coming, but I was far off, way off base. Lots of surprises, and lots of great action.

Patrick faces off against a foe, and this is one who knows a lot about fear. And Patrick is ready to expect the unexpected. That and fumbling through the relationship with his daughter, all the while considering another alternative that involves Lien-Hua. And this is all happening while investigating some fires that have been set, and this is all happening in San Diego. One of the main goals is to see what lies behind Project Rukh, and just maybe slip by this enemy's defenses. And as far as enemies go, Shade is as clever as they get, and he gets what he wants! Nothing personal against Patrick, of course. Right?

Get ready for the pages to flip in this one! Steven James is on his game, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for the likes of Patrick Bowers!

A tense, twisting thriller from Steven James

In THE ROOK, Steven James follows up the sensational THE PAWN with another great thriller featuring FBI Special Agent Patrick Bowers. Bowers is summoned to San Diego to help solve a string of 14 fires that had been set by an unknown arsonist. Bowers brings his step daughter along because he believes there is really no danger. While at the scene of a fire, Bowers and Tessa witness the dramatic suicide of a homeless person. Then the plot takes off from there. A mastermind named "Shade" recruits an evil ex-con named Creighton Melice to do his bidding. Victor Drake's technological firm is developing a top secret weapon for the government called "Project Rukh." Then there are fires and murders, backstabbing and betrayal, and plenty of twists and turns.

THE ROOK is a complex thriller filled with great characters and a twisting plot. This is one Christian novel that can stand up to the best in the thriller genre, Christian or not. Bowers is still struggling to raise the teenage Tessa, a step-daughter from a marriage that ended when his wife died. Tessa is a smart girl who longs for the family Bowers provides and needs the freedom and trust all teenagers desire. When not on the case, Bowers is having his own feelings about Lien-Hau, another agent on the case.

THE ROOK is full of violence and evil, but beneath it all is a layer of grace and peace. James takes the readers to the limit and then brings them back. This book might be too intense for fans of tamer Christian fictin. At times, the plot might be too comlex. Many times, Bowers takes in the evidence, comes the conclusion that something just isn't right, but doesn't do anything about it until later when it is convenient for the plot. Overall, this is a thrilling, fast paced novel. You'll get your money's worth on this one and I can't wait for the next one.

Powerful memoir by Bieber's mom, detailing her path to Christian faith amid turmoil and hardship.

It would be easy to label this book as one told by "Justin Bieber's mom", having no merit beyond that, especially since the title of Pattie Mallette's book includes the words, "The Story of Justin Bieber's Mom.".

But to focus only on her famous son as a reason to purchase Nowhere but Up could lessen the possible impact of Pattie Mallette's heartbreaking yet ultimately powerful and inspiring faith-based memoir and limit its readership. It is definitely worth checking out even though Mallette's life and journey to Christianity may not appeal to everyone.

But to dismiss her unique voice and experience would be a mistake - and also sadly ironic since Mallette struggled long and hard to find that voice and tell her story. It is one which deserves attention, especially by those who have gone through painful childhoods or suffered abuse.

Perhaps Mallette puts it best when she notes, early on in the book, - about her motivation for sharing her experiences, good and bad:" I decided to tell my story not only for my own healing from a difficult past but also to help bring healing and liberation to those of you who may have suffered in similar ways."

This point is backed up in the foreword where Bieber describes his mom as "the strongest woman I've ever met" and explains that the book underscores that fact.

From then on his mother tells her story.

Well over half of "Nowhere but Up" is about Mallette's life before Bieber entered the picture, with the first 9 chapters (there are 16 chapters in all) describing her painful childhood, the experiences that shattered her self esteem, and her search for love. Mallette alaso writes of her growing Christian faith but it is a faith that was rocked by doubt and setbacks along the way.

At one point, she recommits herself to God yet admits that she still had not "committed my sexuality to Him just yet", perhaps one reason why she and Jeremy, Bieber's father, remained in a turbulent relationship for so long. It must have taken courage for Mallette to avoid turning away from honest admissions of the choices she made and the consequences she faced - including an unexpected pregnancy.

Of course, that pregnancy led to the birth of the now famous Justin Bieber but how many know the details of his mother's life before fame struck? As Mallette notes, she "survived single motherhood by sheer willpower and a ton of prayer." She also rose to the challenge by making different choices...with some rough patches along the way... after her son was born.

As one might expect for a book dedicated to her heavenly Father, Mallette also describes the awe she felt when her prayers were answered in spite of her doubts. The apartment that came along when homelessness seemed like the only option, the financial windfall which gave her a chance to find a better job, and more.

And Mallette is clearly grateful to have Justin in her life. Her love for him is unwavering, even when Justin's energy and boisterous nature leads to challenges at school - and with at least one landlord. While other parents might have quashed their child's spirit, Mallette finds a way for him to share his musical talents. Most know the rest of that story.

Again, would readers want to buy this book if it wasn't about Bieber's mom? Maybe not. But they should. A special bonus is an extensive photo section titled A Journey Through the Years.

I'm not a teenage fan, but a fellow Christian...

Well people... I read it in one night! I couldn't put it down. It was so well written and with the right motives. My heart jumped and I could really feel the love of God pouring out. Let me tell you... for most of the book I forgot whose mother she was. She was so open, honest and just plain raw about her past hurts, the pain she had to endure, her shortcomings, but also the stark contrast with God's awesome love and amazing grace. In my mind, this was an amazing Christian testimony of how wonderful and loving our God is despite the many obstacles we go through in life. I found myself choking back tears of joy and smiling as I walked through her journey. Sometimes, I was just in awe with my jaw literally dropping. It's a moving walk through the tests and triumphs of Pattie's life to date.

Fellow readers, I believe you will find this book uplifting and encouraging. This is a story about a woman whom God had plans for... BIG plans! And just to encourage you, God has no favorites, what He did for one, He will do for you (Acts 10:34-35 MSG). I'm not saying all of you will have superstar celebrity sons, but rather that He has a great purpose and plan for each of us if we will just let go of control and trust Him. This book reminds us to not look at our circumstance, but keep our eyes on the Lord who always exceeds our expectations. Further, even when we turn away from Him, He pursues us. It was such a beautiful book, humbly written, and points to our Lord and Savior. Well done Pattie and A.J., Well done! I highly recommend!!

P.S. I purposely didn't go into content so as to not spoil the journey, but I did want to set good expectations. I hope this helps.

GET OVER IT?????

This book was cathartic for me as it must be for many women. Patty Mallette goes straight to the underlying causes and trauma that has led to her self- dislike and low self esteem. I'm barely past chapter five and already she has touched on many of the emotional issues that I have had and which I felt that I was the only girl in the world who felt these feelings. Patty is right on. The book brings up many issues for those of us that still carry the self-hatred but at the same time this book gives us HOPE. Patty has walked in our shoes. And she can help us walk, too.

To anyone who says "Get over it" I suggest that you read the book again as obviously you HAVEN'T walked in our shoes. No victim of this type of abuse justs 'gets over it'. It's a comment that denies us any dignity by down-playing trauma and brushing it aside. We've brushed it aside long enough!

And to Patty- It really struck home for me in the chapter where your girlfriends at school suddenly, without warning said they no longer wanted to be your friend and didn't want you hanging around with them. I cried because it happened to me and I was completely devistated for what seemed like months. I didn't "just get over it". We are people who cling to people so they'll be our friends and when they turn against us the pain is immense. Normal people wouldn't understand, but there are those of us that certainly DO understand. Thanks for writing it. And my grand-daughter wants to thank you for Justin!

Another great Dan Walsh book, it's like he has his own genre

Romance, Vietnam history, and mystery all packed into a Christian fiction novel. That's a Dan Walsh book, and he has another winner in "The REUNION." It even ends in a December Christmas setting. What's not to like? I expected a good read- got it. I read recently another Walsh book, Deepest Waters, The: A Novel is finalist in the 2012 ACFW Carol Award.
UPDATE-UPDATE "THE DEEPEST WATERS" by Walsh WINS the 2012 Carol Award. Be sure to order it also.
Walsh is one of my favorite rock-solid writers, and I'll be reading anything he ever writes- during my (I'm older) lifetime. An end page ad indicates he's soon teaming with Gary Smalley for a series.

This book's about vet Aaron Miller, Florida trailer park handyman with a past--bad & good. It's about a young son of another vet-killed who intends to make his own contribution honoring Nam's forgotten vets. It's about a pair of siblings who learned to accept a step-dad. It's about some other characters too, all given their own prominence and interest through the writing of Walsh weaving lives of Christian characters in FL and Texas.

The romance by Walsh fits men too, and it's contemporarily believable. I like that, true love, not gush/sex. Nam history recalls accounts of late 1960s TV news war footage. Body counts. A missing person mystery adds suspense enough I did not stop reading- soiled pages eating/reading. Christian heroes. It's all there.

It's Walsh's distinctive conclusions that set him apart from the also-authors. It takes a long time to wrap up the threads of one of his books, so many lives coming into one focus, and then the Walsh `ah-ha' ending. Because I read so many, few books create literal emotion for me. Before "The Reunion" end, I wept---physical tears. Now that's fine fiction.

Wow....what a story that touches your heart and makes you think before putting someone in a box.

This is truly an amazingly beautiful story! One that reaches into your heart as you really look at each character of this story. It makes you remember not to so quickly judge others until you've spent some time in their shoes. Each of us has a story that has made up our life and is the reason we are where we are today, be it in a good place or a bad place.....but there is always hope if you choose to forgive, or to just take the time and learn someone's elses story and not just judge them. This was a wonderful, wonderful story. Definitely give it 5 stars!

I just wish the happy ending was longer, though. Did the hero move to be by his kids? What happened to Billy? Loved the comments about faith in there too. Salvation stories are so fun...there's always new reasons a person or character comes to faith, and this book showed me new thought lines. Loved it.

Daddy's Little Girl

There are few relationships more treasured than that of a father and his daughter. Women all over the world grow up but always remain "daddy's little girl." Those that don't share that special bond or even have a daddy grow up with a hole in their heart, often looking for love in all the wrong places to fill it. Johnson gives fathers an amazing tool with this book, to equip them on HOW to be that daddy that every little girl longs for and needs in her life.

When I began this book and saw chapter 1 was called "What Are Little Girls Made of?" I was a little leery. He goes into detail the facts about women, their bodies, their cycles, hormones etc. At first I was bored by this seemingly unnecessary obvious anatomy lesson. But then I remembered, it is NOT so obvious to the men this book was designed for! Some men do need these facts in order to better understand the opposite sex. What a great tool for them!

I love that this book goes into every aspect of girls and what they need from their fathers and HOW to give it to them. So many books go on and on about the `what' and forget about the `how.' Johnson gives fathers very clear direction as to how to build that special bond with his daughter and to give her all that she needs as she grows from babyhood to adulthood.

Daughter's need more than just their fathers financial support. They need their love, their time, their guidance and their presence in their every day life.
Parenting is hard and the answers aren't always obvious. Johnson really delivers a powerful message with his book and one that every father should read if he wants his daughter to forever remain "daddy's little girl."

As a survivor of sexual abuse in my childhood, I know first hand the damage that can be done by not having a good father in your life. As a mother of a broken, blended, re-broken, and re-blended family, I can see the path of destruction as clear as the path of an F5 tornado in the news feed. I wish there would have been someone in my past who championed for me the way a father should champion for his daughter.

Reading this book as a daughter, wife, and mother, I learned a lot about myself, my husband, and my four girls. I recommend this book for everyone, especially any parents who may be going through a divorce. Every father should have this book and read it, re-read it, and then read it again until it's as familiar as his favorite wallet in the back pocket of his favorite jeans.

If your daughter had a life threatening illness, and the only cure was something that you had to pay five thousand dollars in cash for, you would do it without hesitation. It's with this intensity that we need to be focusing on all of our daughters. Without a clear idea of what a father should be, her life is in danger because of the choices she will make to fill the void. Isn't that just as important?

The thing I love the most about Rick Johnson's books is that he doesn't hold back or sugar coat what the world needs to hear. This book might hurt to read, but only because it makes you face the reasons for your choices and then you have to make a conscious decision to change.

The love of a father

Subtitled "How a Father's love Protects and Empowers His Daughter" this book is just that. Many father's get lost in the provisional respects of their role in the family life forgetting or never fully understanding that love is a key element.

As the Senior High Girls Youth teacher and the Sunday School teacher for younger girls I see first hand what a lack of a father's genuine love does to a girl. Few father's truly understand the magnitude of influence they have in what type of young adult emerges in their daughters. They wonder why their daughters make bad choices in careers, life style, dates, etc - it boils down to what they were taught by their fathers. A girl's worth is often tied up in what she thinks her father thinks about her.

I am impressed with Rick Johnson's book in that it not only explores the importance of a father's love and influence, or what a father should do for his daughter, but it goes a step father to empower men to be the very best fathers. In this book Johnson attempts to give men direction, encouragement and advice on how to accomplish the task of loving their daughters in a way that protects and empowers them.

Our children are faced with a myriad of decisions. They desperately need a solid foundation of love to succeed in this unstable world. After reading this as a review copy I found myself wanting to buy the book "That's My Son" and "Better Dads, Stronger Sons". As a mother I want to know firsthand how I can help my sons become godly men - and if Johnson handles the subject of sons as well as he did daughters I do not expect to be disappointed.

Although I am a mother, I would highly recommend this book for fathers (and mothers to read with your husbands). If you are a single mom - read this book to better understand what it is your daughter may be longing for - then begin to pray for godly men to step into that role.

This book was disappointing.

On the one hand, I liked the historical details the author included. Her description of Jewish holidays, their trips to the temple and to Jerusalem, the food they ate, the homes they lived in, etc, was very interesting. But beyond that the book was very disappointing.

The character development was what bothered me the most. Somehow I just can't see Martha sneaking out for a rendezvous with a Roman soldier, even if he does claim to worship the god of the Jews. It seems out of character for Martha based on what the Bible says about her.

Mary's relationship with one of Jesus's 12 disciples was illogical. The disciples were so focused on Jesus and the ministry I doubt they would take the time to develop a romance with someone.

I also hated how the author portayed Judas' betrayal. The way the author describes it, she implies that Judas had good intentions when he betrayed Jesus. According to the author, Judas thought that if Jesus got arrested, he would suddenly decide to make himself king of Israel, and free the Jews of Roman oppression.This doesn't make any sense. Judas would have known that Jesus couldn't be manipulated like that. Besides, the Bible makes it very clear that what Judas did was an act of betrayal, not good intentions gone wrong. It says that the "Devil entered him".

The author's description of Jesus is also sorely lacking. While she mentions some of Jesus miracles, she doesn't once talk about Jesus spiritual message, which focused on the coming of God's kingdom. Thus, the faith Martha, Mary, and Lazarus developed in Jesus came across as shallow.

Lastly, the ending of the book is very disappointing. We aren't really told what happens to Mary. And Martha's story ends with her accepting a proposal of marriage. But the author never tells us what happens to Martha and her husband after they get married. Do they get annointed with holy spirit at Pentcost, as many of Jesus followers did? Did they help form a Christian congregation? Did they follow Jesus last command, which was to preach the good news to all the nations? The author doesn't tell us. Thus she puts way more importance on Martha's marriage than she does on Martha's faith in Jesus and her development as a Christian.

Overall, a very disappointing book. It came across as more of a romance novel than Biblical fiction. It could have been so much better.

Wonderful Biblical Novel!

MY REVIEW-There are some times when a Biblical novel is not to my liking. I hate when there is a lot of liberty taken and the story does not follow Bible or when it has so much written into it that I have a totally different look at that story than I used to. But every so often a really good book comes along that I just love. And this is one of those time! Martha is a somewhat smaller book but I loved it! I think it shows that the author kept more to the facts given in the Bible and history.

This novel shows many different aspects to Martha that I never thought of before. We always think of her as being the stingy sister who wanted Mary to help her instead of listening to the Lord. But this book shows a unique side to her, that I don't think goes against Scripture. My favorite part was when Lazarus was raised from the dead. Wow! So much goes into this that I was amazed. It definitely opened my eyes to what went on. I will never read the factual account in the Bible the same way any more. It really goes to show the miracle and how much we take for granted.

This was a great book and I would definitely suggest it for any Church library. I will be on the lookout for the next books from this author.

The Story of Martha

Being a fan of Biblical fiction, I truly enjoyed this book. It is a great story. Diana Wallis Taylor did a wonderful job of bringing Martha to life. I think Martha is always used as a "what-not-to-do" example, and I'm so thrilled with the way the author told her story. She created a reason why Martha was so worried about getting things done. It's so easy for us to excuse behavior today because we understand the "why" behind that behavior. Sadly... Martha doesn't get that same understanding. Until now.

It's nice to think of Bible characters as what they are. Human. This book will bring to life some of the most talked about people in the Bible... Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. To get an idea of what they were thinking and feeling as they walked with Jesus, and as Lazarus was raised from the dead made me see their story in a whole new light. It is very much in keeping with scripture, yet adds enough fiction to make a wonderful book that you'll be sure to enjoy.

Not For Kids Only

This book by the "God Squad" is a MUST have for couples and families of all faiths. This book explores the many questions both children and adults have as they walk the path in their spiritual journey. My husband and I are an interfaith couple and love to share this book with everyone we know. Some enjoy it so much, they won't give it back. Rabbi Gellman and Msgr.Hartman are humorous and insightful. Add this book to your home library - you won't regret it!

Jewish? Christian? Catholic? Unsure? This Book is for YOU.

As the owner of a bookstore for many years, I cannot tell you how many copies of this book I sold...or how many parents came back for second copies after they wore the first one out reading it to their kids. My Jewish friends were especially pleased to find a book that answered so many important questions in an inclusive way. Rabbi Gelman and his close friend, Fr. Hartman, have a website, a weekly column and lots of wisdom to share in ways we can all appreciate no matter what our age or spiritual persuasion.

Helps answer the "Mommy, why" questions

This book has been very helpful for me when my daughter poses a theological question. Sometimes you know the answer, but have trouble putting it into words a kid can understand. This book is for those times. We'll read the chapter together and then discuss. Sometimes my daughter still has more questions, but the book gives us a starting point and often offers a perspective I hadn't thought of before. Note, this is not the book for explaining the concept of the trinity or the details of the Westminster Catechism. This book is focused on those questions your 5-9 year old comes up with that cover really broad aspects of theology, like "Why does God let bad things happen?" The reading level is too advanced for most early elementary children, but should be fine for listening to a parent read.

Meaty but not quite what I expected.

This book is full of some important jewels, but reaches them in a different way than I expected. It is written as a memoir by Elisabeth, including many portions of memoir by her mother as well. It is an interesting addition to the autobiographical history of many of her other works. Along the way are many reflections of the way her faith and family environment shaped her spiritual growth and the decisions she made. It is not a textbook on how to arrange one's family, nor a text on raising children. Although when I read this book the first time, this was the angle I was looking for, I'm grateful now that it was not directive, but rather illustrative of how one family who was fully devoted to Christ worked. I'm frustrated by the current Christian "literature" that implies there is a very narrow cultural way to have a "Christian family." The only narrow part should be the continuous focus on Christ! This book articulates that challenge well.

If you tend to struggle with Elisabeth Elliot, try this book

Even many committed Christians seem to sometimes struggle with Elisabeth Elliot, whose writings, though chock full of much truth and wisdom, often come across as rather harsh and dogmatic.

This book, however, is a refreshing look at the family in which Elliot herself was raised. It is written largely as a memoir of the simple, day-to-day life of the Howard family (Elliot's maiden name.) The author draws heavily from her mother's recorded memories, which in the beginning, seem a little disjointed. I found myself skimming the early chapters a fair bit, but the book is worth a little perseverence.

As the story of Mr. and Mrs. Howard's marriage and early family life unfolds, it is rich with precious gems of wisdom. I was touched by so many of the little vignettes of ordinary life depicted, and inspired to implement many small changes in my own family life.

All the while, Elliot is careful to portray her family as very 'real,' and emphasizes that her story is only one family's story and not some legalistic grid to follow. 'The Shaping of a Christian Family' is a beautiful tribute to her parents, whose daily commitment to faith, family and discipline is a true picture of the delayed gratification of parenting. Many families, including my own, can benefit from the Howard's example.

Inspiring Encouragement

"No amount of talking penetrates as deeply as example," writes Elisabeth Elliot, and the pages of this book are permeated with that philosophy. Elliot frequently reminds the reader that this is simply a memoir of how one family raised honest, disciplined, godly children -- it is not to be taken as a step-by-step how-to guide.

The narrative begins very slowly as Elliot introduces you to her parents, beginning with their births. For those who pick up this book expecting to hear about Elliot's life, there may be some surprise at having to read so much biographical data on other persons. But those pages exist to introduce you to the parents whom Elliot uses as examples throughout the rest of the book.

Through the lens of her family's experience, Elliot illustrates a variety of principles for shaping a Christian home. As she says of her father, "[His] life as we witnessed it was more eloquent than anything he ever said," and Elliot uses him as a picture of godly fatherhood. Daily life, honesty, motherhood, and discipline are all similarly taught through a narrative memoir of Elliot's childhood.

Buy this expecting a ten-step approach to shaping a Christian home, and you will be disappointed. Know that you are purchasing a book meant to teach by example from one woman's life, and you will find a treasure. In Elliot's words, "The greatest need of families is holy parents;" read this book to find encouragement and an illustration of godly parenthood.
