Light and the Glory, The: 1492-1793 (God's Plan for America)This should be a must read for every US citizen! We often forget what a miracle our country was - a new idea in a world of repressive governments. It was freedom with responsibility as God intended for His children. Events that history has buried and have been discovered by the research of these authors will astound you. It was truly a miracle that we won our freedom from one of the the most powerful nations on earth and then were able to build a stable democracy uniting 13 independent colonies.

WAKE UP, AMERICA

This is a very enlightening read, explaining segments of history that have been previously lacking in the manner in which they've been taught. The spiritual realm dominates the physical, and this research reveals the spirituality of the historical figures, taken from their own journals. There is a definite correlation between their successes and failures, with the focal point of their loyalties (God's or man's). It's a real eye-opener for anyone who loves history, esp. American history. To see the impact that individuals have made by having a vital relationship with the God and Father of Jesus Christ is inspirational for those who desire to learn from it. WAKE UP, AMERICA!

Discovering the Habits that I needed to break...

Dr. Leman, in his typical witty way, gets right to the heart of the problem- and talks right to me! I was confronted in my patterns of being a Pleaser, which only allowed me to feel comfortable with controllers. I am at a point in my life where I want to get off the merry-go-round of bad relationships. Dr. Leman discusses very practical ways to change my habits, which will in turn help me choose healthier relationships. I have already recommended this book to many of my girlfriends who are ready for change in their relationships- friendships, marriages, dating relationships, family relationships, etc. (Interesting how it all starts with changes in our own perceptions, etc.)

This book was originally titled THE PLEASERS. As a licensed mental health counselor, I have recommended this book to many of my clients. Dr. Leman helps any woman break free from the demeaning and self-debilitating habit of trying to please everyone but herself. Women have long been taught by society that they take a back-seat to everyone else and been discouraged from being their own person. This book was an instrument of healing in my own life many years ago and it still stands up as a leader among books on this subject. By-the-way, the principles can work for men caught in the "pleaser" trap, too. I hope it never goes out of print! I am using a pen name only due to personal reasons related to safety.

A life-changing book - I would recommend it for anyone who feels they try too hard to please and do not receive the positive feedback they feel they deserve. I bought it for my daughter and she loaned it to a friend and they both agreed with my assessment. I felt like Kevin Leman was writing about me.

Not wearin' high heels, but love reading about them!

I love Rhonda's new book "High Heels in High Place"! I really don't wear high heels now that I'm 45 year old, but I love reading about them. Of course it's not all about shoes it's all about our relationship with Jesus Christ. On page 23 I underlined "it's all about being filled up with Jesus! It's about having a testimony of the power of God at work in a life." This book has made me laugh my "shoes" off and check my walk with Christ at the same time. Oh yea, and I did notice there's a discussion guide in the back. Way to go Rhonda!

Devotionals for high heels or slippers time

Are you a fashion diva who has a special place in your heart for shoes, but also a special place in your heart for the Lord? Do you want to find a great way to connect with God while reading a book that helps you understand, in terms you can relate to? High Heels is for you! Divided into several parts (with 4 chapters in each part), this book can be read straight through or used as a daily (or weekly) devotional book.

Rhea uses fantastic analogies regarding shoes and spiritual issues...it's hard not to laugh at her `shoe' humor! But one really great thing that Rhea does with this book is start you out small, with small doses of spirituality, and she slowly leads you into greater and deeper subjects. Then before you know it, you're experiencing a deep relationship with the Lord that you never knew was possible.

While reading this book, it was hard for me to read it straight through...I had to read it in portions in order to digest all of the information that was laid out before me. It sort of got overwhelming if I tried to read too much at one time, but if I read in bits and chunks, it was much easier to understand.

Since I'm not a shoe fanatic, however, the constant shoe analogy kind of got annoying after a bit. I could handle some, but too much of a good thing is simply too much. However, I can easily see how this book would be a great addition to a personal bookshelf in order to pull out and use for women's group devotionals.

I believe a large group could really benefit from this angle of spiritual insight.

I've grown

This awesome author gave me a close-up look at Colossian 1:9-12 - word by word, phrase by phrase. This powerful message in the Bible tells us to "walk worthy". It then tells us how. Rhonda Rhea took me by the hand and with great insight and side-busting humor led me step by step. Jesus used everyday items to teach deep spiritual truths like water, salt, and bread. Rhonda does the same with shoes. Every chapter astounded me with life-changing thought and creativity. This book cuts through all the theological jargon and religious cliches to communicate clearly what God has in mind for our everyday lives as we seek to "walk worthy" of the One most worthy, by the grace He supplies.

I have to give Rhonda's book 5+ stars. Must reading!

Perfect conversation starters for group study

I just used these videos in our church's. Ladies' Bible study of A Confident Heart. I love that they are not so long as to take up the entire teaching time and they are a great jumping off point for deep discussion.

The object lessons Renee uses really bring to life the principles in her message. The one where she fills a jar with things and water and then removes the items to show how much room we can make for Jesus in our hearts is my favorite!

I also love how the videos are filmed in different paces of her home and really reflect her personality as a "real" person and not some untouchable famous author! I felt like we were personally connecting with her through the screen.

If you are looking for a group study with great discussion, these videos are a must companion to A Confident Heart book study.

Talks too fast

Renee talks extremely fast which makes the session guide unusable, there is no way to follow along and fill out the blanks. I found myself spending hours watching the videos for each session and filling out the guides for the other students in advance of each study session. I'm very disappointed in the video sessions.

She helps us to remember, and/or even discover, how we allow others and life in general prevent us from having and maintaining the confident hearts that we were created to have. Very honest and relatable book. I purchased the Audible version AND the book so I could highlight, highlight, highlight - because it's that good. Used this for a women's small group setting as well. Highly recommend it for anyone.

The Pelican Bride

I thought, based on the picture on the cover of the book, which this was going to be a light, fluffy romance. I couldn’t have been more wrong! There was nothing light or fluffy in the book with the exception of the pastries. This story is set in 1704 in what eventually will become the area of Louisiana and Alabama. The French are trying to establish a thriving colony, but the humidity, mosquitoes and location of the fort are making this difficult. The approximately 200 men living in the fort are French or Canadian soldiers, merchants or tradesmen. In order to grow the colony, a request is made of King Louis of France to send over women contracted to marry one of these men. Louis agrees and sends the ship called the Pelican to the New World with several women on board.
Genevieve Gaillain and her sister Aimee are daughters of a baker, who was murdered for his religious practices, which were anti-Catholic. To escape religious persecution, the girls agree to marry and board the Pelican. Upon arrival, they realize that what they were promised in France is not what is in fact reality. Living conditions are poor and the threat of Indian attacks is very real. Genevieve has told herself that she will keep her religious views to herself, marry a God-fearing man, bake her bread and make a life for herself and her sister in the New World. Tristan Lanier is a widower who was married to an Indian woman killed by British soldiers. He still grieves her loss two years later, but is inexplicably drawn to Genevieve. As much a surprise to him as it is to her, he asks her to marry him the day before he is to leave on a two month expedition to try to ally with various Indian tribes. Can their marriage survive separation, secrets and manipulation? Can Tristan develop a real relationship with God or will he remain a nominal believer?
I just loved all the historical information interwoven in the story. I knew nothing about this time in history at this place in history and learned a lot, which I much appreciated. I thought the characters were very interesting and well-developed. I came to care what happened to them; I was invested in the story. The story was not boring at all and kept moving at a good pace. I really enjoyed the story. I am looking forward to the next book in the series to be released in 2015.

You'll probably want to take a Intermediate to Advanced French Class before reading this book!

I tried to read this book, but I felt like I needed to interpret the French language better to be able to get through it. There was just too much French language without the usual English interpretation with it, as you see other authors thoughtfully do. I am an avid reader of Christian Historical Fiction and I understand French some, but it was just too much. The cover was beautiful and initially drew me to the book, but hence the saying goes and reversely applies to this book...."you can't judge a book by it's cover."

Interesting look at the early Louisiane colony

I have read several contemporary romance novels by Mississippi native Beth White. She always brings a great sense of place to her books, so when I heard she had written an historical novel set in the fledgling Louisiane colony, I knew I had to read it. Filled with rich historical detail, The Pelican Bride is a perfect read for those who love history and romance.

Genevieve Gaillain, along with her sister Aimee and other women from France, is transported upon the Pelican to find a husband among the French soldiers and Canadian craftsmen that have settled into the new Louisiane colony (now Mobile, Alabama). What they encounter definitely does not exceed their expectations. Rough living conditions, even rougher perspective beaus, an unstable political environment and hostile Native peoples combine to create at least a little fear. But their contracts state that they must find husbands, so the courting begins. But Genevieve has secrets that make choosing a husband tricky. Can she trust God to safely lead her in the New France?

Set in 1704, The Pelican Bride was meticulously researched. The peoples and place that was the capital of the French colony in the American South come to life in Beth White’s hands. New-to-me history and an intriguing plot kept me reading. I especially liked the political machinations and the relationship between the French settlers and the Native Americans. There is plenty of political intrigue and detail about the Huguenot persecution to create a well-developed historical setting. The blend of characters, both historic and fictional, was interesting as well. My favorites were Jesuit priest, Father Mathieu and Nika, a native woman integral to the plot. The romance is a bit predictable and perhaps stretches believability. The two main characters, Genevieve and Tristan Lanier. resist their attraction for the first half of the book and then suddenly marry and fall in love. But The Pelican Bride is first and foremost a romance and follows along the prescribed lines for the genre.

All in all I would recommend The Pelican Bride to all who love an historical romance. The little known era detailed in the book makes it a fresh and interesting read.

Powerful little book!

I came across this book while browsing the Internet the other day and immediately wanted to buy it because it looked so good, but I couldn't justify spending the money. Things are that tight right now. So I prayed, and God answered my prayer with an unexpected Amazon gift card in the amount of $10...just enough to buy the digital copy of this book without spending any of "my" money. That was a miracle in itself!

It only took me about two to three days to read this book. It's easy to understand and is so practical. I love all the prayers and look forward to praying many of them daily now as I wait for God to show me miracle after miracle...blessing after blessing.

Be warned, though: If you start praying the prayers in this book, you will get closer to God, and you will be blessed, but you will also be ATTACKED by the enemy because he doesn't want you get to closer to God. He wants to keep you as far away from God as possible. Don't let him. Buy this book, and open up your heart and life to what God wants to do in, and through, you.

A Woman of Credibility

Linda Shepherd has tackled a tough topic and I was curious as to how she would unwrap it in a believable process. Immediately I felt the authenticity and passion of her heart for following God. Linda has her own stories of pain. She has seen God unleash miracles in her life in a way that perhaps were not what would not have chosen, but nonetheless, she sees them as God's best for her life and the life of her family. Linda has built credibility with me because she does not contrive to make a case for God, but she allows the truths of God's word to build the case for miracles. I see Linda as a woman of prayer, and has come to realize that prayer is the source of all power and the unleashing of miracles.

I read this book one chapter at a time because I wanted to soak in what Linda had written. I especially spent time on the beautiful prayers. I began to realize how those prayers are pivotal to seeing AND believing that miracles are available to us and they are all around us.

I highly recommend having this book at your bedside to read one chapter a night. It will build your faith and fuel a passion for knowing God's power in your life at a deeper level. Buy this book for yourself and buy 10 others to give to those people in your sphere of influence that need a miracle.

Much to Glean.

"When You Need a Miracle" is predominantly a book about prayer. Linda Evans Shepherd takes you step by step in learning how to pray and also what hinders prayers from being answered.

She shares from a deep, personal place reflecting on some of her own life experiences. She discusses two incidents when she especially needed a miracle. One had to do with her brother and the other had to do with her daughter.

The chapter which spoke the most to me was Chapter Five, entitled The Forgiveness Factor. This chapter delves into the importance of forgiveness.

My favorite chapter was Chapter 7 entitled, Fighting the Enemy. I learned some very powerful prayers in this chapter which I will continue to implement in my own life.

Overall, there is much to glean and learn from "When You Need a Miracle". I recommend this book to anyone struggling in their life and desire a miracle through answered prayer.

She has tackled some difficult and sensitive issues without resorting to incendiary or emotional arguments. Whether you agree or disagree with her position, you cannot read this book without being forced to think about your own position on these issues.

This has been one of the best handlings of this subject that I have seen. Her arguments are sound and biblically grounded which is more than I can say for many. Whether or not you agree with her views on women's and men's roles you will find yourself challanged into new ways of thinking about the subject (if you read it with an inquiring mind).

Interesting and Inaccurate

Linda raises some excellent issues and causes the reader to re-examine many fundamental assumptions. The book is well written and thought provoking.
Yet, the appendix discussing the meaning of "headship" and submission in Biblical texts is weak and inaccurate in it's analysis of the meaning of the original languages of the New Testament. The Greek words discussed could not mean what the author says unless Jesus Christ is not the leader or source of the church. The author's subsequent divorce may reflect more on her beliefs about marriage than anything she writes here.

THis guy is a total joke

The life of Tex Watson before, during and after the Manson murders told by the sociopathic, manipulative con man himself. All you need to know is in the dedication where he apologizes to his parents for his "foolishness". Foolishness? Really? Have you seen the murder victim photos? But this is a pretty interesting story, if any of it can be beieved. But he strikes me as being very disturbed. He finds his everlasting redeemer in prison and because he suddenly gets a good prison job and a girlfriend, his Jesus stuff flies right out the window. This guy was and is a person that will ALWAYS be out for himself, looking to see how he can exploit any given situation. Don't pay for this, download it free from his prison ministries website. WHat a joke this dude is.

A Charming Story!

I enjoyed reading Cathleen Armstrong's debut novel, Welcome to Last Chance. The story is sweet, the town is charming, and the characters residing in Last Chance, New Mexico are just that--characters--and they certainly provide a lot of color to this small town WAY off the beaten path. I love stories set in small towns. There's something so beautiful about the way people know one another and band together in the midst of struggle. Last Chance was certainly no exception, though I wondered a time or two if they didn't give people the benefit of the doubt a little too quickly at times.

Lainie and Ray piqued my interest from the very beginning. I knew there was more to their stories than initially explained and I enjoyed finding out more about them. Elizabeth, though, was my favorite, though! She was just so warm and caring. I definitely look forward to reading more about Elizabeth in future books in the series.

While the characters and the setting were huge hits for me, I felt that there were a few missteps in the plot. First, there were a ton of characters ... and some with similar names, which always confuses me. I liked seeing a fuller picture of the town, but it did get a little overwhelming at times. Also, the main story was supposedly about Lainie and Ray, but there were three other stories that were pretty fully explained in the book. I almost felt like they could have (should have?) been four separate books in the series. That would have given me the "more" I found myself looking for at times. The second complaint is that there were a couple of plot points that just didn't make sense to me--the trip to Juarez, for instance. And finally, the ending was abrupt. The book was shorter than many, and I felt the buildup, but then it just skipped to the ending. Another 20 pages might have helped me out a bit.

Even with these missteps, I still very much enjoyed the book and look forward to other books in the series! [3.5 stars]

Great debut novel!

I really liked the way this book started out, with Lainie dragging into Last Chance in a car that dies in the first parking lot in town. For the first few days, she doesn't know whether she is having good luck or bad luck with the things that are happening. Before she can blink, though, she has a place to stay and a job - just no car.

She has been on her own for so long that she doesn't recognize it when someone cares about her and is not just ordering her around. She has had her fill of being ordered around, but because of situations in her past, can't quite feel comfortable anywhere. She is afraid that her ex is going to come looking for her, and she can't let him find her.

I loved Lainie. When she discovered that she was in a situation that she didn't like - rather than staying to try to change her boyfriend - she packed up and left. Something I think not a lot of young girls would do. Especially ones that didn't have anywhere else they could call home. When she arrived in Last Chance, she was cautious, but she was not afraid of work. She was a good person who had just not had a perfect life.

Like the people of Last Chance, this book was warm and welcoming and presented the gospel in a very laid back way. For them it was just a fact of life - something they lived every day. They did not need to rub your face in it. Now don't get me wrong - Last Chance had some characters that weren't living the life they should, and even had some Christians whose heart was in the right place even if what came out of their mouths sometimes wasn't.

I thought it was a very strong debut novel and will happily read whatever Cathleen Armstrong comes out with next.

When you can hardly force yourself to put the book down, you know the author has managed to make you part of the story and not just a reader. WELCOME TO LAST CHANCE is that story. Full of interaction of a whole town pulling together as the "family" a stranger to town never had. A story about loving and supporting each other through troubled kids, danger, fear and other family issues and learning to trust the God she never knew. All that with a "happily ever after" ending. I give it 5 stars well earned!
