In this book I found answers to my fears. Christ is my rock. It is my faith or lack that determines how much I can succeed in life's battles. Thank you for these stories. I pray that the lessons stay in my heart.

As an American, as a Christian, and as a free human being, this book cuts to the heart. The sorrows, losses, abuses, and fears that these women face are so great.....and yet they can praise God and wait, endure, hope, and love in the midst of it all. If ever discontentment enters one's mind.....they should read this book and be convicted and encouraged at the same time. If one is ever at a loss for what they should pray, read this book and you will know. Every chapter is coupled with questions and supporting Scripture. Your life will become more informed, your faith strengthened, and your life enriched after reading this book.

This book is a window into the worlds of women in cultures that persecute the church and how they have dealt with different hardships. The stories are inspiring, make me appreciate my freedom, and encourage me to take more risks for God. As group of women, we are reading this together and the book contains questions at the end of chapters that help us to go deeper into what we believe and are challenged by.

This isn't as good as its predecessor, but readers who liked the characters introduced in Rhythms of Grace will be happy for one more dance with Grace, Brian, Zeely, Ron and assorted supporting characters. Ostensibly stand-alone, the story gets moving faster for readers already in on the tangled web of relationships, which gets a lot more tangled, and more related, as the four major characters slowly, slowly move past the trauma that ended the first novel. Both books are set in Testimony, Ohio, a place that, in the author's clever conceit, was home to any fleeing slave who could pay $500 to settle there. The history of slavery ties the story together as it marks and twists family lines laid out in the book. This good idea suffers in execution from a few too many secrets and neat resolutions. The pace also drags, with literal sermonizing as characters sit in church or as they agonize over repeated relationship setbacks. Though her promise doesn't deliver enough, Griffith remains worth watching. (Nov.)

Circle of Love

When I read the last page of Rhythms of Grace, I knew I could not wait for the sequel to be released. Once Songs of Deliverance was released I could hardly wait to get my hands on a copy. The first night I started reading Marilynn Griffith's latest release I breezed through the first 70 pages. I realized I did not want to drink this story up as fast as I did the last, but it was unavoidable. Griffith had once again pulled me into the small town of Testimony and the lives of the people.

Everyone was back looking for closure to the different choices that either they made or was made for them. Grace had returned to Testimony, in Rhythms of Grace, when her old dance teacher had summoned her. Grace did not realize her returning was necessary in order to fill in the pieces of another person's incomplete life. She was accustomed to running from all her troubles. The time had finally come for her to stand her ground. Would she be able to handle the harshness of reality? Or would she once again runaway from it all?

Zeely was willing to settle in life and in love. She had made choices that would surprise some and affect others. Zeely had kept her secret desires to herself for so long that she was coming undone with each passing second. She was used to doing what was expected of her. When her mother was alive, she constantly told her she should marry Jeremiah, however, his heart belonged to another. Would Jeremiah and Zeely both look past their true love and commit to one another finally?

Best friends Brian and Ron are so different but yet they are so much alike. They grew up as close as brothers, but their lives seemed to be a bit more than they could control. Are any of them really in charge of where they were and where they were headed?

Griffith is a skilled novelist. Her stories provide food for thought and entertain. Life in a little town is easier to understand after reading Rhythms of Grace and/or Songs of Deliverance. In order to enjoy these characters you do not need to read Rhythms of Grace first because Griffith recalls the information throughout the story. However, I would encourage reading both books.

Stunning sequel to Rhythms of Grace

Songs of Deliverance by Marilynn Griffith is the powerful sequel to Rhythms of Grace. The story picks up in the middle of an attack on dancer Grace Okoye and her rescue by her friends Zeely, Ron, and Brian. Each character has a rich, multi-layered history entwined with the others. Ron and Zeely have loved each other since high school, but each is engaged to another, and Grace and Brian are soulmates who can't seem to get past their history to find each other again. I wish that I had read the previous book, because it is important to untangle all of the lines of connection between the characters as well as the minor characters, although in Griffith's writing there are no minor characters. Every one is brilliantly rendered and completely real. Her writing is thick and rich, trapping readers and pulling them in this story of love, faith, and friendship. I want to know these people. I want to see Grace dance, Zeely sing, Brian play the drums, and Ron preach. Their story broke my heart and then put it back together again. I've been a fan of Griffith's for years, but this is absolutely her best work yet.

Thought-provoking reading

Interracial relationships. For some reason it's still a taboo subject in Christian fiction. Are authors still worried about offending readers who are against this? I mean, it's the 21st century and it's not a fad that is going away. As someone who is in an interracial marriage, I find the lack of even just talk about it very discouraging. Therefore books that do include this in their story lines are grabbed by me as must reads. Marilynn Griffith is one of the few authors in Christian fiction that isn't afraid to write about what actually happens in real life.

If you're expecting a light cozy read that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, you've picked up the wrong book. This book shows the ugly side of people and events and eventually how they affect relationships and the way people turn out. The character really gel in this book. There's a lot of interaction between them and you do feel as if you really get to know them. One aspect I found really interesting about the book was the truth behind Ron's family history and how ironic the whole situation with his father ended up being. I don't want to spoil it but let's just say it's amazing how some people just want to ignore the truth and choose to stay blind instead.

While this book could be read as a standalone, I HIGHLY recommend reading the book that came before this, Rhythms of Grace. The characters from Songs are first introduced in Rhythms and their back story is fleshed out. Many references from the first book are made in Songs and the reader will understand it better if they go back and read it first. Even myself, who has read Rhythms, still had trouble remembering who was who while I was reading Songs. The story is mainly about Zeely and Ron but a lot is also focused on Grace and Brian as well.

Overall I enjoyed this book. At first it was a little hard to follow because the POV would continually switch between characters. There wouldn't be a pattern, it was a random, even bringing the POV from secondary characters sometimes. However once you remembered to check the title of each chapter to realize who's POV it was, it was a straightforward read. Marilynn's books always aren't afraid to talk about issues that most people try to avoid. Racial and church issues are brought up heavily in this book that many would dismiss but really needs to be talked about. There needs to be more books in Christian fiction like this.

I respect Joni Eareckson Tada on so many levels. I remember hearing about her a couple years after her accident. She was the same age as me (20) and I wondered how she was able to accept her disability with such dignity. Through the years, I have had my share of adversity and people like Joni have been a true inspiration. This book addresses questions that I have often struggled with.........even a chapter on autism!
Joni's writing style is easy and conversational. She has compiled real people stories in an organized way.
I read the book quickly and can't wait to order another book by Joni.

Courageous in the Christian cultural contex, but falls short

I commend Patrick Means for what he is attempting to do. And, in fact, he does make a good presentation of the various challenges men face in society today, and, for the most part, have faced throughout history. It's a good summary and that alone, for many, will be worth the time and effort to read it, i.e., it's a good first step towards awareness if that's where you are.
Where Means really hits his stride is in the chapter "Living the Secret Life," in which he outlines the pain, misery and isolation of sin, and the elaborate ways we cover for ourselves, physically, socially and psychologically, and how cover-up leads to even more damage. Unfortunately, it is a comparatively short chapter and is not backed up with much detail. I wish this chapter went on for much longer (perhaps even an entire book), because I've been there, and I get great comfort from hearing others' experiences and learning how they made it out of the pit. (For those interested see: St. Augustine's Confessions and Merton's The Seven Story Mountain)
The real reason for the low rating, however, is that right when I think Means is going to step up to the plate and be brave (in the context of Christian culture) in his recommendations for recovery, he completely wimps out. What do I mean by this? He backs off from saying MANY MEN, SPECIFICALLY INCLUDING CHRISTIAN MEN, WOULD BENEFIT GREATLY FROM PSYCHOTHERAPY, and trudges right back to emphasizing the modification of external behaviors and praying better and harder! (Ok, I'm oversimplifying, but that's essentially what he says.) He avoids directly addressing therapy, which may seem a little thing, but it is not. And my guess is, the author knows it!
What was so disappointing was that throughout the book the author makes statements such as, "Compartmentalization is one of the most sophisticated mechanisms our mind uses to accomplish self-deception," "because it doesn't deal with the whole person, one-dimensional recovery only drives the pain underground," and, the most hopeful, "Christians have done a fair job of applying God's truth to our external behavior...but we have done a much poorer job in applying the truth to the vast interior of our hearts and minds: our thought life and self-talk, our motivations, our damaged emotions."
Then, in one casual and almost serendipitous reference, he says, "God has used the headlamp of many Christian therapists and authors to help me see the pattern of pain..." And that's it, that's basically all he says about therapy. He never even recommends seeing one if you need to. Why does Means pull back? The only answer I can come up with is that outward pressure of some sort has compelled him not to put that in there, when, in fact, therapy--even by an atheist--can unlock things inside of you that open your heart to God and to Jesus. It happened to me! And it just irks me to no end to see a book like this where all logic says that therapy should be part of the solution, but the author does not have the courage to say it. I would love to hear the author's explanation for why he did that....

Patrick Means treds where the average Christian man has been trained not to go. Through frank testimony of personal moral failure, repentance, and redemption he allows the rest of us to see where the spiritual land mines are BEFORE we must cross the field.
Christian men have become accustomed to hearing impotent "just pray about it" advice for their struggles. We've learned to act as though everything is OK when inside we've been dying.
Means exposes the facade of modern Christian man for what it is -- a seemingly solid covering for a cancer of unresolved pain beneath. By honestly sharing his trials and temptations he catalogs his own journey to wholeness, while at the same time offering practical, solid advice for how we can do the same.
Come into your own as the man God created you to be -- don't settle for second best when an incredible blessing awaits. Men who are vulnerable, sharing their hurts with other men, are the true heroes of this world and the next.
Read the book! There's a new you inside.

This book is a real eye opener. I recommend it highly. As good as it is, any book, in my opinion, can really only be a good door. This book as well as other factors, has led to family counseling which is literally, by the grace of God, saving our marriage and family.

This is a great book for those who are suffering through any type of loneliness, ie. widows, those suffering witih chronic disease, divorce, singleness, etc. Ms. Eliot has great incite from having experiences that have created loneliness for her.

I found this book a compelling read...who doesn't want to know what Heaven is like. We have all heard that those who go through the light don't want to come back.
Marvin Besteman, a stubborn Dutchman as he calls himself, was just operated on for a pancreatic tumor. He was in such pain the night after the surgery, and all of a sudden he felt himself floating free. No tubes, needles! For months after this experience he doesn't tell anyone.
The first person is his wife Ruth, and when she asked him if he had thought of her, he told her no. Was she disappointed? I think what happened was it was all so wonderful, that he didn't have time to think of anyone. What he describes is so very very wonderful, no wonder he didn't want to return.
I have recently lost my Husband, this book really touched my heart, and gave me a lot of peace. Marvin describes in detail the babies...lots and lots of them. In all stages of development from a few week old fetus to a full term. I have also lost a 77 day old infant, and to hear that they were all happy and laying on grass ...softer than any blanket. He said he didn't see anyone taking care of them, but knew some how they were all fine.
The colors he describes, the gates, the stone walls, and the throne. I could see it all through his eyes.
I will pass this book on for others to read, and I'm so glad I was given this opportunity to absorb all that is presented.
Of course I wanted more, and would have loved to sit down and speak personally with Marvin, but now it can never by. He did leave again and Saint Peter opened the gate earlier this year.

MY JOURNEY TO HEAVEN by MARVIN J. BESTEMAN

In My Journey to Heaven, Marvin Besteman describes his visit to Heaven in 2006. He describes in detail what he saw and experienced there, as well as the people he saw and recognized.

Normally, I describe the plot of a book without worrying about having to issue "spoiler alerts", but in this case, I don't really see a way to talk about this book in detail without just retelling his story. So, it comes down to this: some people will believe this book, and others won't. I admit that it challenged my thinking regarding Heaven. Everything he described wasn't exactly the way I've always understood the Bible to mean. However, I tried to keep an open mind while reading. Without giving away too much detail, the one point where I felt that this could be on target was when he described what he saw before the Throne of God. It wasn't the type of thing that a man of his generation and theological background would probably imagine.

Whether or not he described Heaven accurately, I feel that he sincerely believed that he saw Heaven, and that it looked just the way he described. This could be very comforting for someone who has lost a loved one. It may not be for everyone, but for anyone who will keep an open mind while reading, it is a wonderful reminder that Heaven is certainly real.

Book Review: My Journey to Heaven, 2012, non-fiction testimony, by Marvin J. Besteman , e-book edition. Date of review: October 3, 2012

I personally know of individuals (close personal friends) who have come back from out of body experiences, or from death after 30-40 minutes of being pronounced dead. So I find it very easy to accept the personal testimony of author Marvin J. Besteman, who writes of having gone to heaven from his hospital bed and then come back. The way by which he wrote his testimony left me with the final conclusion he did, in fact, personally witness all the things he described. His words appeared to be honest, heartfelt, and candid, albeit this book left me asking questions for which there appears to be no earthly answer this side of Heaven. It was an enormously joyful book to read and an encouragement. How could I not give this book a 5 star rating? I recommend "My Journey to Heaven" to anyone who has lost a child, either by natural causes, or by abortion because the story addresses those subjects with honesty, vision, and candor. God is good all the time and this story addresses that goodness.

The book I love most.

Of all the books that I have read (some 80,000 titles), Touch of Wonder is the one that I love most (besides the Bible, of course). It inspires me, encourages me, affirms me, and carries me through difficulties in life. I have given many copies to friends and associates. This one will bring personal joy and amazement to friends as a gift item. I particularly like the chapter on the spiral ladder in Santa Fe and the midnight sky full of comets. Put it next to your pillow as a close friend.

Powerful!

"Speak through me, Lord, if it be Your will," is a line from the opening prayer and I believe God answered it affirmatively.
Arthur Gordon's book is awesome!
Consider what he says about receiving from giving. He writes, "...people who give admiration and affection get them back--if what they give is spontaneous and sincere. People are irresistibly drawn to 'warm' people."
He describes an interview he had with Rudyard Kipling. The famous author told Gordon, "Do the things you really want to do if you possibly can. Don't wait for circumstances to be exactly right. You'll find they never are."
Mysteries are explored in this reflective collection. Intuition, the unsolved, and similar musings. Life is celebrated! We're told "there are two types of human beings: those who think of life as a privilege and those who think of it as a problem."
Consider this poignant observation he makes on purpose, "The worst that can happen to any creature is to be made incapable of doing the thing it was created to do."
Perhaps the most famous Arthur Gordon quote is included in this book. It's one I've heard Guidepost writer and editor Fred Bauer use: "Be bold--and mighty forces will come to your aid."
This is an awesome book. Its contents are powerful. I highly recommend it. The quality of your life will be enhanced as you become aware of the positive perceptions that exist beyond the sometimes cloudy temporal state of affairs.

Homeschool history

This book attempts to demonstrate that God had/has a plan for our nation, and how He has worked providentially in our history. I have never read a book before that so purposefully tries to set forth history as His (God's) story - reminiscent of Diana Waring's cds. My first grader and I are enjoying it very much.

The information in this book isn't available anywhere else. It's a great source of accurate information about some of the early explorers and founders of our great country.

Great kids' book on American history

My kindergartener loves history and has enjoyed listening to me read this book. It does contain some information that I felt was too graphic for him at this age, so I skipped over those parts. (The book is rated for older kids, so the content is probably appropriate for them.) I've read the original version of the The Light and the Glory which was written for adults and it is also a wonderful book.
