And get ready to laugh, nod and even shed a few tears! This tale of slumber parties, changing relationships, girlfriend groups and friends old and new is just plain fun. Each page made reflect with joy on the women God has brought into my life and swell with anticipation (well, I was already swollen, but you get the idea) at the new friendships God has for me. If you can't think of the right gift for one of your "girls", this is it. Buy a stack of 'em!

A Must Share Book!

I love my husband. I really do. But sometimes I just need to spend time with my girlfriends. Thanks to Girl Time I feel like those hours I spent with girlfriends were not only fun, but somehow prepared me for life. Since I have more living to do I guess I still need my girlfriends. I love Laura Jensen Walker's writing, but I am a bit miffed at her right now. Thanks to her wonderful book, I will have less money for food and electricity because I need to buy this book by the case so I can give a copy to all my girlfriends. I love the stories, the humor, and the excitement on each page. I especially like the girl pearls and the wonderful quotes sprinkled throughout the book. This is a must share book for any women who has ever been or had a girlfriend.

Girl Time

A "6 Star" laugh your butt off book! The cat & dog stories had me "Howling" (no pun intended). If you love animals, you will laugh out loud! It is rare when any book makes me laugh out loud. And even rarer when I laugh at the same parts over & over again! Reading 'Girl Time' brought back my own memories of friends, places and times I never want to forget. I called my sister in Oregon, we laughed together as I read her several sections; she finally told me to "shut up" and send her the book. She "didn't want me to spoil the ending". I told her there is no ending. When she got the book; she called me and we "howled" together again. Laura Jensen Walker now has two devoted fans!

Firstly a comment on the kindle version: what happened there? It has missing words, words cut in half, etc. Terrible quality.

I wouldn't exactly pay for something this short and average. This is the kind of article-sized book I'd rather read for free on a website. Very expensive for what it is. It has some interesting things in it but it hardly rocked my world.

Important Model for Church Growth and Vitality

Carl George wrote this book some time ago, but even today, it is a highly relevant and important book for many of today's churches. The concept of small groups is not exactly a new concept. Many churches have encouraged this for years. But few churches even now have turned the concept of small groups into a far reaching and fundamental tool of ministry, outreach, and caring that permeates the entire church mission. Even today, small groups tend to be a "back burner" concept among many churches.
This book tries to draw a direct relationship between small group ministry and church size. The theory is that a church can grow only so big and reach only so many people absent a vital and large emphasis on small groups. George cites a few megachurches as examples of the kind of ongoing growth and changed lives that occur when the church embraces small groups not with a recreational commitment, but with the kind of commitment that comes when something is considered a primary mission of the church.
The small group model for church growth is a model that works, not because George says so, but because several churches who have embraced this model are growing beyond many of the ceilings that the vast majority of churches who don't embrace this model can't seem to break through. Getting their people into small groups, when emphasized and encouraged, allows bigger churches to continue ministering to people and meeting their needs by allowing the congregation to minister to itself and not overtax the staff. This accomplishes the goal of the church not having to build up a huge staff of paid people to try and meet the needs of a big congregation. Therefore, allowing church funds to be spent not on an increased staff, but on more relevant activities that are more in line with the mission that God has imparted on the particular church. Further, small group multiplication allows the church to continue to grow and reach new people in the community in ways that are non threatening.
I did not give the book 5 stars only because the book does not appear to spend a lot of time discussing how a church can really establish a vital small group ministry and structure their staff in an effective way to cultivate it. Too often, growing churches want to do good things, but do not put the kind of infrastructure in place, whether people or facilities, to administer the programs with excellence. It's the classic problem of biting off more than we can chew. The motivations of the church are in the right place in these instances, but without a clear plan in place for administering a major small group ministry, George provides an incomplete strategy for implementing this approach. This may sound like a minor point, but it isn't. Ministries that are not undertaken with excellence are ministries that fail to fully fulfill the purpose for which the ministry was created. Having an administrative infrastructure in place that effectively manages a big small group ministry while also being an infrastructure that is frugal relative to church budgets is clearly one aspect of establishing a ministry with excellence. And this aspect is not easily addressable and thus, represents a significant challenge to George's model. It is solvable I believe, but George should have addressed this in more detail, in my view.
But clearly, George has hit on something that every church can benefit from if implemented correctly. At its core, Christianity needs to be about people. And in order to meet people's needs and transform people into fully devoted disciples of Christ, the church must place just as much a priority on meeting people's needs and providing care and support as it does on spreading the Gospel message. In fact, I would argue that those two things go hand in hand, and both are strengthened by the other. Having an active small group ministry that looks for small group solutions for a whole array of congregational concerns and interests is a proven model for church growth and evangelism, and something George describes very well. A good book, a good pastoral resource.

Must-read book for churches that want to grow.

Many churches have adopted small group ministry as a way to connect Christians and to provide support and growth for their members. George shows how small groups can become an engine for evangelism and leadership development and enable churches to break through barriers to growth. Essential reading for any church wanting to grow -- in both numbers and depth. I also recommend the follow-up book by George, "The Coming Church Revolution," which goes into greater depth and detail and provides examples of many churches from several denominations that have successfully used this model.

Best reason for small groups

While some of the diagrams leave you wanting and wondering, the heart of the book solidifies the need for small groups. Especially in a era when there is so much demand on our time and so much stress in our lives. When George related the story of Jethro and his council to Moses, I knew our church HAD to get behind small groups in a big way. George shows how small groups are the key to a church family and how they are the true ministry of the church.

Reconciling Faith and Suffering

I was born with health issues and have suffered for many years of my life as a result. I am now an adult and have rarely enjoyed life without significant pain of some kind. I have been prayed for, prayed over, told I lacked faith, preached to, felt sorry for, etc. But this book puts meaning and purpose not only in suffering, but in faith through suffering. With the additional quotes from the inspired poetry of a woman who suffered before us, this author puts meaning behind the idea that God is sovereign even in our suffering, and she does not settle for trite answers. She offers a reason to hope and believe even in suffering and a rationale for why God still loves us even if He must lead us down a path through suffering. Many authors have tried to reconcile suffering and the idea of a loving God, but this author simply offers an experience with a loving God while suffering. I have given this book to many friends who have had to face trials or suffering and would heartily recommend it to anyone willing to accept that God may have a purpose in their suffering.

This book is a "must read" for anyone who has ever suffered or is suffering, for any reason. This book helped me so much to realize that "suffering" is not for nothing, as Elisabeth well puts it. There is a reason why God allows us to suffer. He wants us to be drawn to Him and Him alone. You will never be the same after reading this book. Read it with a heart open to hear what God wants to say to you about suffering. It is not something pleasant to do, but you will be a better person having gone through it. May God bless you, dear one, as you suffer with Him.

Shocking and provocative, definite re-read

Having been raised by an extreamist feminist, I recognized many of the accusations made by LaHaye in this book as being genuinely part of the feminist/humanist agenda. Even had I not become a follower of Christ, I would have recognized every statement as being true. What was most eye-opening for me was how accurate the author was in his predictions. He makes many statements about how "20 years from now..." that, having read this book in 2002, 20 years after the initial publishing, I could see how accurate he was.

I think I never felt easy again about claiming to know truth through faith rather ...

I have to credit this book for starting my path to freethought and reason. I read this book many years ago (1985), buying it from Mr. LaHaye in person on one of his revival trips. Going on memory, somewhere in the book it had the Christian viewpoint and presented in a building blocks format, and it has the “humanist” viewpoint, and the foundation for that viewpoint. I would guess that LaHaye intended for every reader to view the humanist viewpoint which he described as so ridiculous and evil, that no one would actually choose it because of his book. For me, it was very confusing because even the way he presented it, I couldn’t’ help but find myself identifying more with the humanist chapter because it was based on reason, freethought, and just generally humans figuring things out for themselves. I didn’t convert due to that, but I know it did irreparable damage to my Christian foundation. I think I never felt easy again about claiming to know truth through faith rather than reason. Of course when I went on to focus in the sciences, ecology, including evolution, it just reinforced that approach to learning knowledge through testing, and skepticism.

I guess it just goes to show that one should be careful presenting a humanist viewpoint, regardless of who you are. You may unintentionally convince someone

Wow, better than a dozen others!

I have watched, attended and reviewed many marriage improvement sessions. This one is excellent. It has easy to follow action items, including things to talk about - and things to do - to make a relationship closer. The theme is that nobody who is "in love" ever wants to leave their spouse or stays mad at them for long. This series actually teaches you how to fall back in love with your spouse. How many marriages could be saved if everyone who had problems tried this! It is truly remarkable.

Great Relationship Investment

Some of the reviewers who say that Harley is out of date, sexist, etc., aren't giving him a fair evaluation in my opinion. When Harley states things like physical attractiveness are important to men - that's not sexist or shallow... it is reality. His whole point is that there are things that are GENERALLY important to the different genders. If a woman wants to get upset at a man for placing a premium on physical attributes what they're really saying is that they don't want to listen to a professional therapist's assessment after years of counseling. That would be like a guy saying that financial security or affection shows how shallow women are. His whole point is that the two genders are wired differently and in order to make deposits in the other person's "Love Bank" you need to learn what those things are and make an effort to meet those needs. The problem with most relationships is that many people think it is all about them... and they rationalize their deficiencies and laziness by saying the other person is shallow. If you really want a genuine relationship with someone other than yourself you need to learn what makes them tick and how to fill up that Love Bank. Choosing not to is the true definition of being shallow.

Starts a good Conversation.

This book, workbook, and video does a good job about informing difference in the males perspective and the female perspective while still being respectful. It also gives logical and practical examples of how an affair could begin without making the strayed spouse feel like a complete failure. And gives helpful information to repair the relationship. So this is a start to finish style book it tells you how the perspective may lead to an affair and then gives useful information for fixing the relationship so you can both move forward. I have really enjoyed this book and lesson with my husband we would read it during our couch time and it always led to some great discussions.

I can't help but say anything but good about Gilbert Morris. His books provide laughs, serious thoughts, they provide historical facts interwoven with the fictional characters. It's an oldie but a goody. Be sure to read the whole series.

Very Well Written But This is not a "How To" Book

I was really excited to receive this book as we have two little superheros in our home. Always trying to understand a little better the male mind, I couldn't wait to dive in.

How Do You Tuck In a Superhero?: And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys is a collect of stories written by a mom of five boys. Rachel Balducci is a delightful writer and has an amazing way with words. The book contains approx. 100 mini-stories of life around the Balducci home. She proves that with boys there is never a dull moment.

Even though the title is "How Do You...", this is NOT a parenting book. This is key. In reality, this book is just stories of life with boys. The crazy, unthinkable, scary things that boys do and say. This book is set up more like a gift or coffee-table book.

Momma C's Thoughts: As much as I hate it, I couldn't get into this book. I didn't laugh at the stories or chuckle at raising boys. I really wanted to. But it didn't come. Here are a few reasons why, I believe I had this reaction. With three kiddos five and under, I am tired. Reading some of these stories was like reliving them. Some of the things boys do, I would rather forget! Also, as Moms we tell stories about our kids that are really funny to us and our immediate family but other people just don't get into them like we do. Lastly, boys are boys. They truly are Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man's Soul. With that said, unless you like to read stories about other families, I can not recommend this book.

Contradictory of my last comment, there are a few moms who might find this book helpful. You will learn through reading the Balducci stories that raising boys is different than raising girls. Boys think different, are motivated differently, and reason things out differently. For those Moms who haven't been around boys, this book will be comforting as you realize that your our son isn't crazy.

Rachel Balducci has a popular website called Testosterhome. I would suggest reading some of her stories on her blog and then go from there before deciding to purchase this book. I want to reiterate again, this book is very well written. I have a lot of respect for Balducci as she is extremely talented. This is just not a type of book that I am interested in in this stage of life.

I just tucked into How Do You Tuck in a Superhero last night and COULD NOT put it down! I love how Rachel captures the creativity and craziness of boys and the beauty of being a mom of boys. And by beauty I mean, the total disruption of what you thought your life would be like as a mother. Being a mom of boys myself, I saw myself in every chapter, laughed outloud, and was reminded once again that I love that God blessed me with 3 wild and sweet boys. If you are a mom of boys or a mom in general, this is one for you!

Okay but not what I was expecting

Was expecting creative parenting tips for how to wrangle hyper boys and make the routine acivities fun. This book is just a Moms observations about her 5 boys and her own quirks related to parenting. It is okay but not great.
