Already Amazing IS RIGHT!!!!

I was skeptical of this video.....for the first 3 1/2 minutes! THEN....oh goodness.
This is one of the BEST life growth video series I've seen (and I've seen a LOT). The segments are super short, but SO good that I had to constantly stop, rewind, and watch multiple times! Holley is very open, engaging, and encouragingly REAL. The Life Growth Guide DVD goes with the Life Growth GUIDE (sold separately) and both together are great. Lots of work to be done in the Guide, and the video builds up the positive experience of working through how to be better in Christ and improve ourselves in His image. HIGHLY RECOMMEND for small groups with intimate discussion capabilities. All age ranges (later teens on up) would find it entertaining and applicable.

The DVD is the perfect companion to "You're Already Amazing" and the "You're Already Amazing LifeGrowth Guide." The videos on the DVD are short and sweet, which is great when you're in a group setting and don't want to spend the whole time watching a video. They're high-quality and well-produced, but not overly slick and cheesy like you often see in study DVDs. Holley comes across as genuinely warm and caring, yet she's able to deliver a challenging message to viewers. (I received a free copy of the DVD in exchange for my honest opinion, and this review reflects my sincere thoughts).

The resourceful and interesting Raleigh Harmon

Raleigh Harmon has a bundle of interesting characteristics. She’s a native of Richmond, Virginia, and went to school with Richmond high society. She has friends who own James River plantations, including the father of her one-time boyfriend. The boyfriend, by the way, served jail time, and he’s interested in resuming their relationship. Raleigh’s beloved stepfather was killed by an unknown assailant on a Richmond street. Her mother has occasional bouts of dementia. She’s a trained geologist. And she’s an FBI agent.

That’s quite a lot, but there’s more.

She’s asked to lead a civil rights investigation into the death of a black man who fell from a factory roof to his death, followed almost immediately by a police detective falling to his death. Raleigh’s boss wants the investigation over before it begins. Racial tensions are growing.

This is the story of “The Stones Cry Out” by Sibella Giorello. And it is a story where it’s impossible to get bored – it’s got more action packed into it than a Rambo movie, including the heroine swinging off a building to collect evidence.

The novel is the first of the Raleigh Harmon mystery series. Giorello has written several of them, as well as a young adult series and a number of other works.

In this one, the reader gets some of the back story of Raleigh’s life – her immediate family, growing up in Richmond and living on Monument Avenue, her friends and professional acquaintances, and how she came back to Richmond after working in an FBI forensics research laboratory in Washington, D.C. And Giorello includes a considerable amount of local Richmond color and topography, as well as an understory about faith.

The series is, I suspect, aimed largely at young women. Raleigh is resourceful, independent, decisive, and knows how to get things done. She also knows how to get around obstacles like her boss, and isn’t beyond bending rules to do that.

I’m looking forward to reading more about the resourceful and interesting Raleigh Harmon.

Surprises to the end

Other reviewers have outlined the plot, so I won't be redundant. I'll just tell you why I like "The Stones Cry Out."

I appreciate that it's a "grownup" story without profanity or sex.

I like that I couldn't predict from the first chapter that "She'll end up with that man" or "This is how it'll end." I didn't figure out the ending until it was spelled out for the reader. That's a refreshing change from the last few books I've read (which I haven't reviewed and won't identify).

I like the complexity of the case that Raleigh is working on, especially that I got to try to solve it along with her. I don't read a lot of forensic mysteries (is that the right name for the genre?), but this one definitely piqued my interest.

If I had to change one thing about "The Stones Cry Out," it would be to limit the scientific jargon. My background is in science and I generally appreciate the detail, but sometimes it seemed to get in the way of the story.

Overall, though, I'd recommend this book!

I found this book to be professionally written. I noticed an earlier review referring to issues with spelling and punctuation but if so, it has since been edited and updated.
This is a good, solid read with wonderful characters who all make the reader feel something towards them, whether it be sympathy, anger or liking. Interesting characters. The book itself includes fascinating history of the area, which is needed to explain motivations behind some of the characters' actions. Also the writer obviously took some time making sure her FBI procedures were correct.
The novel sucks you in from the first page. I read most of it last night, until I was too sleepy to continue even though I didn't want to put it down.
I was amazed to read that this was the author's first novel as it was so well written. I don't like to spoil the read for others by summarising the story, so I won't. I will just say it is worth the read and any thriller/mystery fans will not regret giving it a go. Enjoy!

This is a very interesting and compelling book. It refreshed and renewed my spiritual life with the accounts of what we have to look forward to in heaven. As a believer, it definitely gives you something to look forward to when we do go to heaven.

Such an inspirational book filled with so many quotes mine looks like a coloring book!

Heaven is a very real place. As believers, we have the hope and faith of believing that when this life ends, our eternal one ends. Dann A. Stouten in his debut novel shares one such experience of Schuyler Hunt, who takes a journey one afternoon while his wife and daughters head out for a all-girls shopping trip to inquire about a cottage for sale. This cottage reminds him of the one from his childhood and might just be the perfect thing to consider making a purchase on to help his own family share in his favorite times at the lake!

Sky needs this time alone not only to reflect on his favorite times at the cottage, but also to get away from the stress of always coming to the aid of her younger brother Ben. It always seems like Sky has bailed Ben out of one financial mess after another and this time is no exception. Ben has overspent on the line of credit the bank has extended on the used car lot his brother now manages. Instead of immediately coming to his rescue again, he simply needs to take some time to consider just what to do, and another perfect reason for this trip.

Only when he arrives, he gets more than he bargained for when he arrives at the entrance of the property in a rain storm and gets his car stuck in the mud. Knowing it's late, he decides to sleep in the car until morning. When he arrives at the real estate office, he meets Michael DeAngelo who tells Sky, they have been expecting him. Sky figures his wife has made these arrangements and thinks nothing of his comment. He is escorted into the cottage, where he meets Ahbee who makes him an amazing breakfast. Ahbee tells him that he is about to get a true taste of heaven, but doesn't understand all the implications just yet. He thinks Ahbee is taking about the home made cinnamon rolls he made for breakfast. Sky thinks he truly has gotten away from all the cares of home and is now in God's country. Ahbee tells him that he is and he will be learning quite a few things during his stay at the cottage, but whether he stays or not is his choice.

What Sky is about to encounter will truly be a heavenly experience as he enters Angel's Gate and spends some time at the cottage reflects on God's interaction in his life and the people who have moved on to heaven are now given a rare moment in time to share something that God wants each of them to pass along to Sky in his quest for answers to the problems in his life. There are so many great and inspirational quotes it is too hard to list them all here, but trust me, once you pick this one up, you will also find yourself on your own journey into a small slice of heaven!

This novel reminded me so much of Mitch Albom's One More Day in which the main character Sky finds himself in heaven where he gets to visit with those who have died for a day. His mother, grandparents, friends and mentors all share a bit of heavenly wisdom along with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to encourage and inspire Sky to become a much better person with the time he has left on earth. He remembers that "time is an unrenewable resource that should never be wasted," and spends the "time" he is here learning from those who have gone before them. This is such a wonderful novel that gives us all a glance into what heaven might be like and cause us to live our lives with the time we have left on earth, with more passion, purpose and love. I'd rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars.

An inferior knock-off of "The Shack"

I am a big fan of "The Shack," and right off the bat it was obvious to me that this was a take-off of "The Shack." In fact, I found myself annoyed early on when the protagonist, Schuyler Hunt, was clueless as to where he was and what was happening, when anyone familiar with the "Shack" knew what was going on.
I don't object to Dann Stouten's taking the basic idea of the "Shack" and adding his variations. In fact, some of his chapters, in which he meets various people from his past, are quite good and original. But especially in his portrayal of the Trinity he falls far short compared to the "Shack."
Ahbee is a rather boring old, white male who likes to cook (no surprise here) when he isn't off being busy doing something. When he does speak, it is mostly in monologues with a slightly condemning edge. He sounds suspiciously like a preacher who finally gets to talk uninterruptedly. It would have been much more interesting if he had engaged in a real dialogue with Schuyler.
The same is true for the other two members of the Trinity. During his first day with Josh, Schuyler helps him with a carpentry project, but Josh is reluctant to engage in any conversation. By the time he does get his chance to talk, I lost interest in what he had to say.
I had no problem with the Holy Spirit being portrayed as a female, or as wind or breath. But she had little character or interest beyond that, other than walking across a puddle in imitation of Jesus walking across the Sea of Galilee in the Bible. Big deal.
What I missed most was the interaction between the three members of the Trinity which is so vividly portrayed in the "Shack". In fact, with exception of the final scene, Schuyler always meets them one by one. Even when they are together, they aren't talking to each other. Given that the love and community of the Trinity is a key aspect of who God is, this was very disappointing to me.
As to the rest of the book, I could see that the author is a pastor with a degree in narrative preaching. In most of his chapters Schuyler meets one character from his past, who has one specific point to make - one lesson to learn. Some of these lessons are quite good and well presented, but I thought at times this book was really a hybrid between a fiction and non-fiction book. At times the preaching got in the way of enjoying a good story.
There were other smaller flaws, like a "deus ex machina" solution near the end to a dilemma to which he had given no clues beforehand. But this may be excused by this being the author's first novel. All in all, the style is well written, but I doubt that I will read another book by him.

I really felt for the characters and loved how the book wasn't just about one couple.

Love Comes Home was a really good read. I loved getting to know the characters I "met" in Small Town Girl (second book in this series, but first one I read) more.

This was definitely not an "everything's perfect" read, as several of the characters go through heartbreaking situations, which made it realistic. I really felt for the characters and loved how the book wasn't just about one couple.

While I did really like the book, I didn't care for the times when it seemed like the story was being told from characters' reflections/thoughts. I preferred it more when we learned things as they happened.

All in all, a great read that I enjoyed. If there are more Rosey Corner novels, I'll probably read them. I recommend Love Comes Home to fans of historical novels -- especially if you enjoy WWII novels and don't mind some sad scenes.

Lightly Heavy Christian Romance

Ann Gabhart is one of the authors I have enjoyed more than others. Her latest, this novel, is clearly a romance. It's funny to me that it's labeled "Historical Fiction". It should really just be labeled "Christian Romance" in my opinion.

This latest novel by Ms. Gabhart is about a family of sisters after World War II finding their way to love. There's pain and suffering in the novel. The recovery of the men from the war is only touched upon and not delved into. The story focuses more on the role of love in each of the sisters' lives and their trials, travails, healing, and blessings.

Picture four sisters ranging in age from 14 to 25 years old (I think). One wonders about the family who left her amidst the Great Depression. One adjusts to pregnancy and her husband, a rescued POW, returning from the war. Another grieves the loss of her husband to the war and processes how to heal and continue living with her toddler daughter. The last, who saw herself as the strong one, copes with her husband returning from the war who she loves but doesn't know that well. The story follows these four sisters and their stories.

I'm just going to consider this in terms of being a romance. If you enjoy Christian romance and want a book that isn't going to put things into your mind that you don't want there, this book will fit the bill. It does idealize love a little bit and make it seem as the be and end all of life, but don't most romance books do that? I appreciated the way the sisters bore with each other amidst different personalities, gave each other space when they needed it, but put each other first, too. It is a good, solid book about family and what it means to love one's family. The story is set in a time when families lived in closer proximity than they do today. Our culture has changed. But, the ideas of loving one's siblings and bearing with irritations are the same things that happen in families even from a distance when siblings communicate regularly and have relationships with one another.

If you enjoy Christian fiction set around the time of WWII and romances, you'll probably enjoy this one. I didn't realize that this was the third in a series at first and that Angel Sister was the first book. I much preferred Angel Sister and often recommend it. I didn't read the second book in this series, but it was easy enough to read this book as a stand alone series. I think I can understand now why there isn't as much character development in the book since it is the third book in this series. I had wondered about that a little when I had begun the book...

A Post-WWII Slice of Life

Love Comes Home is the third book in Ann H. Gabhart’s stories about the small Kentucky town of Rosey Corner. This particular novel is a picture of what life was like for the veterans returning from World War II. Veterans came home to parades and heartfelt welcomes while inwardly they struggled with hyper-vigilance, survivor guilt, and where they fit in the world they were reentering. While Tori mourns her husband’s loss in the war, her sisters Evie and Kate welcome theirs home. Life goes on, but nothing can be exactly the way it was before the war and adjustments must be made by both those who are coming home and the families they are rejoining.

Gabhart’s attention to historical detail is excellent and she brings out the shadows as well as the light. For example, she doesn’t just describe the jubilation at the war’s end with dancing in the streets and the like, she also shows us a gold star mother peeking from behind her curtain to watch the celebration signaling an end to the fighting that took her son’s life. To a large degree, this is what Tori does for most of the novel: celebrating with her family while simultaneously grieving that her husband didn’t return as her sister’s husbands did. She’s in the same place physically, but her heart and emotions are not always in sync with everyone else’s.

One of the main themes of this book is sorrow’s place in life, how we deal with it and eventually move beyond it. Each character handles it differently, much as individual people in reality do, but I appreciated that they all came around to letting God begin to heal their hearts rather than trying to power through another day in their own feeble strength. Prayer is integral to this process in the book, whether praying for contentment, for acceptance, or even for healing itself. Nothing can be successfully done without the Lord’s help, but faith is so woven into this story and the family it portrays that it never seems forced or preachy, merely an outflow of these characters’ daily lives.

This novel doesn’t shy away from the hard questions of life. Why did some men come home from war and others die half a world away? Why does God answer some prayers the way we want him to and fail to grant other requests? Easy answers are not given, but we are allowed to see the struggles that bring peace if not an actual solution. Again, prayer is central to obtaining this peace, even when the situations are far from ideal. Realistically, we don’t understand all of why some things happen, but life goes on and so must the people still living.

Love and being loved are also discussed at length. Romantic love is of course prominent, but we also see love among siblings, between parents and children, within the community as a whole, and God’s love for His children. One of my favorite aspects of this novel was the repetition from various characters that loving someone new doesn’t mean we have to stop loving someone else, even those who are no longer with us; the heart is capable of infinite expansion.

The pacing in this story was a bit slow at times, but much of that may come from both the time period and small town setting this novel portrays. The author is also tying up a lot of loose ends from previous books, so it could be secondary storylines just seemed out of place for someone like me who hasn’t been with this series from the beginning.

Overall, this novel is a nice slice of life portraying the post-WWII period. Readers who already know the characters will find this a satisfying conclusion to the two prior books and there is enough backstory for new readers to pick up this book without reading the first two.

Helpful guide to talking to your kids about sex

I have just begun reading this book, but so far is has been very helpful. The book communicates the content clearly and in a supportive manner. I appreciate how it addresses how akward this topic can be for parents. It does seem to be somewhat reduntant and wordy, repeating the same themes throughout the book.

Sea Rose Lane in Hope Harbor~delightful slice of small town life

Sea Rose Lane is a delightful slice of small town life in charming seaside Hope Harbor, Oregon, as seen through the eyes of a host of interesting characters who have issues of every sort to overcome. Issues of self-worth, aging, immigration, desperation and second chances to name a few.

Attractive successful attorney Eric Nash, recently downsized, is returning to his peaceful childhood home to regroup. However, his father has the house under construction, fulfilling his lifelong dream of owning a B&B. Heading the construction crew is lovely "once burned, twice shy" architect BJ Stevens. There first meeting begins with a bang, literally and figuratively speaking.

Secondary characters, eighty-eight year old, Eleanor, who believes she's outlived her usefulness in life, struggling Cuban immigrant carpenter Luis and taco vendor/successful artist Charley, all contribute to a well-rounded neighbor helping neighbor storyline.

The Helping Hands project knits together all the characters in a very satisfying way. I enjoyed the underlying theme of how caring for others and community service are where true fulfillment in life is found. As much as I enjoyed Eric and BJ's touching and sweetly simmering romantic relationship, for me, Luis's survival journey to a new country and all his accompanying struggles stole the show.

Irene Hannon has written a wonderfully poignant book with a social consciousness that shouldn't be missed. My thanks to Irene and Revell publishers for providing a review copy. 4.5 stars*

I Want to Move to Hope Harbor!!

I have fallen in love with the town of Hope Harbor, Oregon!! If only it wasn't a fictional town. Author Irene Hannon has done a magnificent job in creating a small town inhabited by realistic and interesting characters - - and I love it! Not since reading all of Jan Karon's Mitford series books have I felt that a fictional town was "so real" - - but that's how I felt as I read Sea Rose Lane. An out-of-work attorney and an architect have a rocky start to their relationship, but as the story progresses a romance blossoms. The secondary characters came alive for me too---with their distinct traits and backgrounds. Lives are intertwined and even situations that appear hopeless are given hope and another chance. Now I am eager for the next Hope Harbor book (but in the meantime I might re-read the first two!). I highly recommend Sea Rose Lane for a book that is a delight to read, never dull, and has a very satisfying ending. FIVE STARS!!

Predictable

Irene Hannon's books are rather predictable - woman with blue eyes and either red or blonde hair (one who resembles Hannon to some extent), with a (mildly) hurtful past meets a man who comes to her rescue. *yawn* The characters are always a little out of date, although they're supposed to range from their 20's-30's. For example, it's only recently that Hannon's characters discovered texting. The women tend to wear clothes that went out of style in the 1990's (red silk blouse and black pencil skirt for date night, capris for casual wear). I feel like screaming at the characters, "It's ankle pants! You should be wearing ankle pants!" :) Sometimes Hannon puts her personal slant on the characters (Democrats are good, Republicans are evil, Catholicism is good, non-Catholicism is of the devil), etc. etc and that sort of judgmental, preachy, heavy-handed jargon always makes the read less enjoyable.

This book wasn't as bad, hence the 4 stars instead of 3. The plot was predictable, the characters a little one-dimensional, but if you're looking for a quick, light read that doesn't require much thinking, this might be for you. I do believe this is my last Hannon love story. I have one more mystery book of hers to finish, but that's become so predictable, that it, too, will be my last in that genre.

Recommended if you've nothing better to do and don't mind lighter fare.

A New Favorite of Mine from Lynette Eason!

I've read many of Lynette Easons books in the past and while each one has been a fabulous, pulse-pounding read (her Women of Justice series landing easily into my favorites shelf) No One to Trust is easily my favorite book she has ever written! This book is over 300 pages long, and every single page is jam-packed with intense action and suspense!

The plot in No One to Trust was pretty intricate. Not only were you dashing around with Summer and Kyle, who constantly had people popping up who were trying to kill them, but you also had an elaborate history to learn about Kyle as well. I found it all fascinating and give kudos to Lynette Eason for her ability to weave such a complex background story into the mix without ever once missing a beat in the suspense.

For those of you who know my reading tastes, you know I like a book that will keep me at the edge of my seat the whole time -- and Lynette totally delivers that! The chapters are relatively short and each one opens with a bang. I also really liked how Lynette handled the 'romance'. Because Summer and Kyle were already married -- and because Summer was mad at him almost the whole book for lying to her -- there wasn't much physical romance that went on. Most of the love Kyle had for her was shown in deed and words, and it really showed the reader the depth of their relationship. And how their relationship deepened even more through your trials. It really was beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it develop.

One thing that is often lost in a suspense novel -- due to so much action going on -- is the character development. But I didn't find that lacking at all in No One to Trust! As the story progresses, she really fleshes out the characters of Summer and Kyle so that by the time the last chapter arrives, you've almost bonded with this couple. I could totally understand Summer's hurt at Kyle's lies, but I also could understand why Kyle made the choices he did.

There isn't any down side to this novel, in my opinion. I enjoyed everything about it. There were times it was so suspenseful I couldn't read fast enough, and then touching moments where I wanted to savor every word. Lynette Eason definitely penned a winner with No One to Trust and I'm looking forward to the next book that'll be coming out in this new Hidden Identity series. :-)

Unputdownable!!!

Wow were to begin with this one?! To be honest I wasn't sure exactly what to expect going in but it turned out better than I could have ever imagined. I could not put this one down and finished it hours after starting. You are drawn into the action from the very first page and it never stops as you join Summer and Kyle/David on the run for their lives. It's hard to write a review for a book like this without giving too much away so I'm going to keep this one short. I loved the characters and the author did a fantastic job of letting you see both of their sides to the story and feel the emotions that came with it. She also did a great job of keeping you guessing when it came to some areas even though you already knew who the bad guy was. Lovers of Lynette Eason's books or just the suspense genre will love this book and I highly recommend it!

Good read, still needs a bit of polish

While well written as far as grammar and typos, the content still needs editing for continuity. There are a few over the top actions blended in with believable ones. There are several plot turns but nothing not easily guessed early on. The characters are fairly well fleshed out, enough to continue reading about them. I wasn't impressed with scene descriptions or locations as they tended to leave a bland feel. The Christian content would be pleasing to like minded readers and a bit thick for others. Overall it's a good book but short on anything suspenseful or edgy. A free copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest unbiased review.

How to Become a "Husband Whisperer"

Author and speaker Rick Johnson's book "How to Talk So Your Husband Will Listen" helps demystify husband-wife communication. In fact, his purpose in writing is to help women learn how to use their power of influence to help their husbands become the men they were created to be (p. 20). He wants to help wives become "husband whisperers."

He says, "As a woman you can build up a man or tear him down merely by the level of respect you give to him and the amount of faith you have in him. Your tongue wields greater power than any double-edged sword" (p. 18).

In the book Johnson addresses such topics as authentic masculinity, character traits of a good man, traits that hold a man back, differences in how men and women communicate, keys to successful communication, and powerful tools for influencing a man.

Wives, this book is guaranteed to help you better understand your man as you take a look at how men think and process information and how they communicate. You'll also find lots of practical tips you can put into practice immediately. Probably the most helpful chapter is chapter five, which highlights communication differences between men and women, but also outlines ten keys to successful communication with a man. More than anything, you'll learn to appreciate your man for being a man and not just another of your girlfriends.

Sprinkled throughout the book you'll find gray boxes with additional information or humorous anecdotes. Not What I Was Expecting

I hate giving books lower than 5 star reviews - but honestly I was disappointed in this book. I was hoping it would be more focused on conversation/communication - sort of like Nancy Cobb's How to Get Your Husband to Listen to You: Understanding How Men Communicate (Which I loved!!! And was hoping this might be the male author version!) It does talk about conversation - and there is one section I devoured and took notes on - but other sections went into areas VERY deeply about "authentic masculinity" and "nine qualities of good men". I had to just push myself to get through them. I kept thinking "when does he get to the good stuff?" So, if you purchase this book, just know that he spends a lot of time in other related areas.

It is beautifully written to help a woman understand the spirit of her man and how he may hear what she is saying in a different way. Believe me, you can improve your relationship with your words. Life is too short not to put forth the effort. It is easy and you will be rewarded with a happy husband who will try to please you in every way!!
