Encouragement for Single Moms
A comprehensive guide to traversing single motherhood successfully

Teresa Whitehurst has experienced the challenges of single motherhood firsthand and tackles these pressing issues in her new book God Loves Single Moms. Filled with encouragement, compassion and contagious enthusiasm, the author helps readers discover how to make single parenthood a success through her practical tips, professional insights, and the knowledge that they are truly loved by God.

Personally, I remember first hand, feeling like such a failure in God's eyes. Growing up in a Christian home, I was taught NEVER to judge others for any reason (and my mother NEVER did). However, divorce was NEVER considered an option (although, as an adult looking back, there was no REAL reason for my mom or dad to contemplate divorce). When I was faced with initiating the action in my own life (with no parents to validate/reassure/even forgive me in my decision), with a son that meant the world to me-to raise in the best way I could, I stopped at a Church completely unfamiliar to me and requested to speak with the Pastor. I asked him, point-blank, if God would forgive me (and more importantly, still LOVE me) if I sought a divorce. It was the absolute hardest decision I have EVER made in my life!

Each chapter looks at a different challenge and includes Scripture, prayers, questions for reflection, and inspiring stories from other single moms. There is also a thorough inventory questionnaire that helps readers take an in-depth look at the various aspects of their personal and family life and gauge areas where they are succeeding and areas where they would like to see improvement.

Although my divorce was MANY years ago, this book was a source of comfort to me. My son, now 27 years old, turned out to be the MOST AMAZING young man I have ever known (in spite of me)! As a matter of fact, he proposed marriage to his girlfriend this past Monday night, which caused me to ponder the enormous responsibility of marriage and the life he and I shared, with God's help every step of the way!

Great Resource

I'm not a single mom. That being said, I know quite a few and I appreciated this book because Teresa Whitehurst writes from her own experiences and has put together a great book for both single moms and groups who serve single moms. Written as an interactive book, this title is meant to not only be read and ingested by the reader, but also to be applied directly to their lives. As soon as you begin reading, there were principles and ideas that the reader could easily put into action. I appreciated this as books that talk about something that in theory would work, but are just not workable in real life are quite worthless. Don't worry, this book is well worth your time and effort.

I would recommend this book to any mom or pastor or small group leader who comes into contact with single mothers. This book not only provides insight into the world of a single mom, but also would allow those of us in a position to help, to put actions to our thoughts and actually provide relief to a single mom. Peppered with scripture and Biblical truth, this book has made a huge difference in the way I think.

PERFECT for EVERY single mom out there!

I'm a single mom of two sweet, adorable, yet boys-will-be-boys boys, so I knew I had to read this book. It, simply put, called to me. I learned A LOT from this little, easy to read book. Teresa Whitehurst is a fellow single mother(rock on, single moms!), who, through God's guidance, put into perspective, the single motherhood life. Whether your a single mom by divorce, or widowed, we are AWESOME! Why is it AWESOME to be a single mom, when, at many times, it is such a struggle both emotionally and financially? Because all the love and attention of those kids are dished out solely for US! Selfish, I know, but in the end, it is wonderful!

Now, you might be asking, am I single mom by divorce or widowed? I am a single mom by divorce. It is a true struggle being a divorced single mom, because, yes, I still have to "deal" with my ex. We get along for the most part, but it's a struggle because, even though we get along, we still disagree on MANY things regarding our child. It is so hard to please EVERYONE, the ex, the family, the kids, the neighbors, and at times, it feels really hard to please God too. You just get so derned frustrated! You're pleasing everyone but yourself because you feel that you need to focus on your kids. Well, that is TRUE but at the same time, if you aren't happy, you are just "surviving" being a single mom. There is no "thriving" which is what you should be doing, as a rockin' cool single mom. Simply "surviving", no matter the support you may have from friends and family (I have TONS of support from mine and I am super thankful in every way for them!), it can still get....well...rather depressing.

But, through Teresa's mini quizzes, Biblical quotes, and her life experiences, she helps us single moms realize, no matter how young or old we are, no matter whether we are widowed or divorced, there is only One person to please through out this whole ordeal, and One person who will ALWAYS love us, and who will help us through our single mom struggles.

This is a 5 star book, that I recommend to EVERY single mom out there. It is just what I needed and I am so glad that I had the chance to be included in reviewing this book. If you are a single mom, young or old, divorced or widowed, PLEASE....grab a copy of Teresa's book TODAY. Thank you, Teresa!

Lorena, Please give us more LOL adventures!

This book, the third in the Ivy Malone series, is another great one by Ms. McCourtney. Since e-mail, we've all thought LOL stood for "laughing out loud." In Ivy's lingo, it stands for "little old lady," but there's plenty of laughing out loud in these books too. In her usual entertaining style, the author weaves a tale of making it seem natural for our heroine to stumble across another murder and by using her powers of observation ferret out the truth that the authorities have missed by their preconceived notions. Hope this isn't the last in the series. I also recommend her other series, "Whirlpool," "Riptide," and "Undertow."

action packed character driven amateur sleuth mystery

LOL (Little old Ladies) like Ivy Malone should not be on the run in her RV going from town to town to escape people who are trying to kill her. Ever since she was one of the people who helped convict one of the Braxton brothers for murder the clan has been after her. They almost succeeded in burning her Missouri home down (with her inside) and they put dynamite in her car. After escaping from them once more, she picks up a hitchhiker, Abilene, in Oklahoma and the pair applies for a job at Jack and Jessie's compound.

They find the couple dead, apparently the result of a murder suicide pact. There was a note in their handwriting and there was gun residue on Jack's hand. From the very beginning Ivy and Abilene are sure that both people were the victims of a homicide by a person unknown. Little things like a gold Kruggerand mysteriously appearing in a spot it wasn't in before and a bullet hidden in the wall makes them think the case is not open and shut. Ivy proves to be too smart for her own good and as a result she puts her life in danger.

Getting a job as the caretakers to watch over the compound is supposed to gives both women who are on the run (Abilene' husband, a spouse abuser is looking for her) a chance to rest. Instead they find themselves in the middle of two deaths where the surface picture doesn't take into account certain anomalies. Ivy and Abilene make a perfect sleuthing pair and the friendship that springs up between the older woman and the younger is emotionally heartwarming and adds depth to a fascinations and exciting storyline. Lorena McCourtney writes an action packed character driven amateur sleuth mystery that readers will enjoy immensely.

Emus=stupid animals

Ivy Malone is back again, this time on the run in a motor home as she tries to escape the Braxtons yet again. Thinking that she can just enjoy being on the road and enjoying the sites, Ivy sets off on sets off across the country. Of course since it's Ivy, she can't escape any adventure, which comes in the form of a runaway abused wife and a new job opportunity where her would be employees end up dead before Ivy can even apply for the job. Since Ivy can't pass up a good investigation, she and her new friend Abilene search for clues as to what really happen when the son of the dead ask her to be the caretaker. Mix in some emus and enough toilet paper to last you a lifetime, and you've just encountered another normal day in the life of Ivy Malone.

I cannot get enough of Ivy Malone and her adventures. I really love how she just happens to stumble on them, she doesn't go out to look for trouble and pretend to be a detective. She's a very levelheaded person. I always love stories that involve road trips, it's just something about not knowing what's going to happen next in the story. I'm glad Ivy was able to find a good relationship with Abilene who I found to be a fascinating character and a good sidekick for Ivy. Those two women are awfully brave to enter a house with two dead bodies staring right at you. And then they stayed AT the house afterwards! I would have run far far away, just being near the house would have been too creepy for me. I also will say I was surprised at the ending, totally didn't see it coming. Abilene's husband makes me want to scream and I hope justice happens in the next book for him. I found it very amusing during the paintball scene, imagine your grandma shooting at you with paintballs! I also love that she has a toe ring! And the emus and that huge stockpile of supplies! I could go on and on about what a great book this is. Once again I highly recommend this book, this book is like Pringles, once you start reading you can't stop.

Stress buster

Get rid of the stress in your life by taking a dose of this book. Prayer author Linda Evans Shepherd nails it again in much the same way as "Breaking Free" author Beth Moore. They approach common issues with different approaches which makes it so valuable to read both. This time I read it together with Becky Harling's 30 Days of Praise Challenge and together it helped me get back on the road to positive thinking by concentrating on the incomparable power and love of the Lord Jesus Christ who not only loves us beyond measure but yearns to help us to victory in every facet of our lives. The world may be imploding but praise the Lord, He never leaves us or forsakes us!

Finding Peace Through Prayer

I'm no stranger to stress, so I picked up Linda Evans Shepherd's book, The Stress Cure, with high hopes. What's the solution she gives for conquering stress? Less on the schedule? Eating right? Exercise? Better sleep? She says the solution is prayer and throughout her book, she gives prayer prompts and Biblical encouragement to take it to the Lord in prayer.

Everything she said was Biblical and right. I totally agree that it's the prayerful life that helps us overcome stress. You may love the way she guides you into prayer, even doing things physically like placing your hand on your stomach, breathing deeply, and then praying through the prompts she gives. You may also love the way she turns the Biblical accounts into fictional re-tellings instead of just reading the Scripture passages. It just wasn't my preference. I found that I skimmed through all of her fiction passages and prayed myself rather than using the prayers she gave.

She organizes the book around feelings we might have: overwhelmed, stuck, frustrated, burdened, hopeless, offended, anxious, negative, distracted, and depressed and points the reader to the peace that passes understanding. There's likely something for everyone in here, a chapter or two that will really click with you and your circumstances. I underlined various quotes along the way and you likely will, too. This wasn't my favorite book on the subject or even the most life-changing one for me personally, but it certainly may be for you. In the end, she writes, "Trusting God is a key to experiencing God's peace." So, so true.

The Stess Cure

This book needs to be read by everyone. It was such an enlightening read. Linda shares personal stories with you in each chapter and she makes you understand that praying your way to personal peace is just a prayer or two away. There is some deep but true information and wonderful prayers throughout the book.
I learned a lot from this easy to read and understand book.
I gave this book 5 stars and I recommend it.
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for my honest review.

Elisabeth Elliot and this book are absolutely excellent!!! I love how authentic and practical this book is. It completely change my mindset on dating and even on other aspects of life. Elliot does not make being relatable or funny or politically correct her priorities, but trait but puts forth scripture and her personal experience to develop this incredible guide to what it means to be in a God honoring relationship. I bought so many of these as gifts because they are so good!

You have daughters? She and you need to read, period.

I wish as a young man I would have known about Elisabeth Elliot. I know I would not have made the common mistakes. Her is so amazing and my daughter loved reading this book. Note that the book will not save you hence you as a parent need to read it and apply it together. Mistakes and bad judgements will happen but there is Grace.

Being a mother can make you a little bit crazy. Listening to all the advice from friends, family, and the nearly endless self-help books, can take that crazy to a whole new level. This book will help calm this craziness with intelligent and sensible advice with a huge dose of humor. It is a quick read that is hard to put down and is one parenting book that you will be very glad you read.

One Tough Mother gives no nonsense advice on how to be a strong woman who is a strong mother. Broken down into ten "non-negotiables," this book is packed full of great ideas on how to take back your sanity and build love, trust, and respect in your household. Smattered throughout the advice are real stories that give life and context to these ideas.

Seemingly common sense areas of parenting are sometimes so hard to remember or even feel comfortable with, and this book helps bring them into focus. With chapters like how to say no (I know can comfortably say no in several languages to video game playing) to how to start praying for your children, this book offers tips that every parent can use.

Throughout the book sidebars present great outside resources and concepts. These little quips and links offer some great ideas for additional research and topics. The book concludes with a great appendix that reminds you that you are a woman and as such, you deserve some self-care time and expense. It offers great tips on hair, skin, makeup and general upkeep that a lot of moms mistakenly put on the backburner.

Plastic Surgery?

I learned a lesson with this book. Don't buy a book for a friend unless you've read it yourself. Or rather. I won't buy a book unless I've read it first--from now on. I gave this book to a friend for Christmas. She enjoyed the first part, but then didn't say much about the rest. She lent it back to me (because I wanted to read it) and I was taken by surprise last night when I sat down with it.

The idea that we need to be firm with our kids and stand up and take control is a good and important one. But, the second half of the book didn't sit with me. She seemed to get side tracked. She mentions plastic surgery early on in the book and encourages moms to take care of themselves. I am okay with the encouragement to take care of ourselves. Yes, we do! It's easy to get lost in all of the things that we have to do for our kids. But, I never expected such a push for plastic surgery in the appendix. As moms, we struggle feeling like the grass is greener on the other side even though it isn't. God made us the way we are and rather than thinking we have to find a way to pay a lot of money to change our bodies, I think it is wiser to find peace and trust God that He created us the way He did. We need to learn to like who we are--not think we have to change our bodies by surgery in order to like who we are.

There are other parenting books that I would recommend before this one--whether you have compliant or strong willed children.

Powerful book, for moms everywhere

Every mom wants to help their child plan for their life, for their future and their well being. But have you stop to think about planning for your child spiritual future? If not, now is the time to do so. Or are you a mom who wants to plan for their child's spiritual future but are not sure how to? Well the answer to both those questions are found in this book. The author of this book has laid out an easy to follow example of how to help your child go and prepare for their spiritual walk with Christ. The author does an amazing job of relating to everyday moms out there, she is open in sharing her own mothering experiences and failures and shares what and how she learned from them. She gives great biblical insight to how we can pray for our children, how we are the ones that mold and shape our kids into who they will become in the future, and she does it with pure love and kindness. This is a book that mothers to be, young mothers, older mothers and even grandmother can read and put the plans and examples into use in their daily life, to help grow and build up our future generations.

Excellent Resource for New Moms and Mentor Moms

I wish I would have had "The Making of a Mom" when I was a new mother. Stephanie Shott has written a book full of warm wisdom and practical parenting advice. But her words are delivered with encouragement and full of the understanding that no one is a perfect parent.

I especially like the chapter "Speaking Words of Wisdom" which emphasizes the importance of the words we speak to our children. Shott writes, "In life, our words count. As a mom, you have the power to speak life into the little life God has given you." She goes on to give clear examples of words that speak life and words that speak death.

Now that my kids are grown, I'm anxious to use this book as I mentor other moms. The excellent questions at the end of each chapter will help to spark discussion with my mentee mom.

This is a great read! Love the blend of history with romance ...

This is a great read! Love the blend of history with romance with just a touch of suspense! And I really liked how Beth White brought some of the characters from the second book in the series back into the mix. Hated to see this series end!

A decent book

I had been looking forward to reading The Magnolia Duchess by Beth White, the third book in the Gulf Coast Chronicles series, as I had enjoyed reading the second book in the series, The Creole Princess. (My first book in the Revell review program). It didn’t take me long to find myself lost in the world Beth white created with war, love, and loyalty as it’s main theme

I really enjoyed the historical aspects woven throughout the plot of the story. I don’t remember too much of the history of 1814, but reading the Creole Princess and The Magnolia Dutchess has gotten me interested! There is such detail about the settling of the coastal areas around the Gulf of Mexico. This story provided me with a better understanding of some of the details that helped to make the Gulf Coast a part of the United States of America.

It’s always fun to reconnect of the characters from previous titles in this series came back into the story throughout this book. I enjoyed seeing how their lives were playing out since the previous books.

I really struggled with one of the main characters in this book – Charlie Kincaid. As I read, I found his character to be hard to get a feeling for.. As a main character, his reactions to situations are highly unpredictable – often not in sync with who he’d been portrayed to be earlier in the book. His interactions with other characters were also seemed forced.

Some relationships were also rushed, making the story a bit difficult to keep up with

I loved reading The Magnolia Duchess, but it wasn’t up to par with its predecessors in the series.
If you’re looking for an informative yet enjoyable read on this time period I’d definitely recommend picking up a copy of each of the books in the Gulf Coast Chronicles series by Beth White. It is a good mix of solid facts and good storytelling

Hate to See the Series End

As a lifetime southerner, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about some of our history in Beth White’s Gulf Coast Chronicles. For some reason, that history was severely neglected during my school years. “The Magnolia Duchess” takes the reader to the southern coast during the War of 1812, particularly during the Battle of New Orleans. I couldn’t help but recall that beloved song by Johnny Horton from my childhood –

“We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico”

Sorry, couldn’t help myself. What self-respecting southern child (or grownup for that matter) wouldn’t love a rousing song with lyrics like that? After reading Beth White’s account of the battle, the song made so much more sense.

Back to the book. I have loved reading about the Lanier family and their life on the Gulf Coast. As the female protagonist, Fiona was a strong young woman driven by compassion whose first response was to care for others whether friend or foe. I liked how conflicted she was about keeping Charlie’s identity secret from her family and how she tried to do the right thing despite how it affected herself. I liked Charlie a lot too. I had to admire his determination to fulfill his commitments but at the same time I was frustrated by his decisions.

Once again, Beth White captured my imagination and interest to the point I had difficulty taking care of everyday chores. I hate to see this series end but am in hopes the author will see fit to provide her readers with more southern fiction.
