Disciplines made practical

While I'm not completely finished reading the book yet, I've gotten more out of the first few pages of "Pray Big for Your Marriage," than I have from any other Christian marriage/devotion book. I would encourage people to read this even if they are in the dating and certainly the engagement stages, too. There are so many encouraging reminders about how to specifically pray through scripture for your relationship so it helps me avoid the "please bless [my spouse] today" prayer, which, although sincere, isn't specific or anything that is really drawing either of us closer to God's word. I ordered extra copies to give to friends and family!

This was a life-changing book for my husband and I. It really helps put life and marriage into a new perspective. We took all the pinpoint prayers and pray them daily!! I believe it has really blessed our marriage.

About the Author
David B. Biebel, DMin, is a minister, an award-winning author, a health educator, and medical editor of Today's Christian Doctor. He speaks often on health-related subjects and has been a guest on many radio and TV programs. James E. Dill, MD, and Bobbie Dill, RN, were among the first husband-wife Christian medical teams to help establish truly holistic medical practice, which they have been involved in since 1978. A Heads Up on Healthy

I read this on the airplane while on a trip. My sister referred me to it as she was especially fond of it. Unfortunately I left it while deplanning and was not able to finish the book. I think the book raises people's awareness that during one's years as a 70+ person there at things that one needs to be aware of -- rather like a road map with warning signs along the way.

Gave it to my college-age daughter and told her to share it!

Love this book and its content. I passed it on to my college-age daughter because it's everything I'd like to say (or have tried to say or live by example) but this way it doesn't have to come from me directly. Phil and Holly use current and relevant examples and the writing is fun and easy to read. My daughter passed it on to her boyfriend and I told her to get it to her friends too.

Dr. James Dobson is the founder of Family Talk, a nonprofit organization that produces his radio program, Dr. James Dobson's Family Talk. He has an earned PhD from the University of Southern California, and is the author of more than fifty books dedicated to the preservation of the family. This is the 8 CD Package Family CD Pack. I don't know why they added the word "abridged" to the title but it includes everything that was on the cassette tape set.

Here's the contents -

CD 1 - for parents, with guidelines on what to expect and what to say.

CDs 2-7 - for young people ages 9 to 14, covering important topics.

CD 8 - for parents to listen to first, with answers to the questions young people ask.

This is a *great* series created by a man who is a medical doctor, a family councelor, a father and a Biblically based Christian.

This series covers *everything* to help your child (and yourself) survive the approaching adolescent storms.

Defintely a good for your teen

My mom bought me this book about 13 years ago. I was just about to push into my early teen years, and I really had no clue what to expect. I read this book, and I although I couldn't relate to everything in it at the time, it was presented in a clear, logical and Godly way. As the years went by, I began to relate more and more to Dr. Dobson's words, and I recalled his suggestions often. Now, I'm buying this for my much younger sister as she begins her trip into her teen years.

Outstanding experience for pre-teens

My wife took our 10 year old daughter (5 years ago, shopping trip), and I took my 11 year old son (1 year ago, snowmobiling) on overnights, as suggested. Our kids considered it a rite of passage and looked forward to the trips with great anticipation.

Dobson teaches about the many changes of adolescence, which has helped each of our teens to avoid the many pitfalls of that age(so far!). We have loaned the tapes to many friends, and each have been pleased with the experience.

Many ask when to do this trip with their child. Dobson recommends right before puberty- when the child will still think sex is "gross", but old enough to have interest and understand.

This sure beats the talks our parents had with us!

not only for Christians

This collection of selected sermons and prayers of Peter Marshall (prepared by his wife the extraordinary Catherine Marshall) is for Christians and non-Christians alike. It was far too often that I have been forced to look to scriptures and commentaries of other faiths to find spiritual works of both faith and imagination. like his fellow Scotsman George MacDonald, and also C.S. Lewis, Peter Marshall is among the rare exceptions. Not that I have any problem with authors, scriptures, and artists of other faith traditions, its just a rare find in Christian writers on the Gospel. It takes imagination to take a thousands year old text, and breath life into it to make real, relevant and alive for a totally new time and place, but all three of these authors, MacDonald, Lewis, and Marshall do it beautifully. Perhaps those of the Orient and Middle east are usually better at seeing scripture and religion through the prism of the artist's imagination because their cultures are often less focused on the printed word as an end in itslef, and more involved in spoken word, storytelling, and the poetic imagination, at least with regards to religious texts. Whatever the reasons, this scarcity in the Christian tradition makes a collection like this all the more rewarding. I won't try and describe the way Marshall imagines what it would be like to walk with Christ, to live as a disciple of a living Christ. I wouldn't do it justice. Enough to say I suppose, that this book is a rare treasure for any seeker of spiritual sustainance of any faith. Have the courage to imagine that Jesus is real, that the gospel is indeed truth and feel yourself swept away in a torrent of faith. Words of wisdom from one of the spiritual masters of our times. Like all spiritual masterworks, these sermons are an important resource for all mankind, regardless of faith. People forget that Mohammed spoke with reverence of the Hebrew prophets, just as Christ did. Mohammed also spoke of Christ and his Mother. Imagine how many islamist extremists and fundamentalists don't even consider this simple truth. Even Guru Nanak is part of a long tradition of prophets who spoke of unity of Islam and Hinduim, and yet Sikhs started a third religion in his name! But I digress, if you find what I'm saying blasphemous, don't worry, these are my own reflections not those of mr Marshall. My point is this only: If you are a non Christian, and you want to understand the spirit of Christ or learn from his teachings, besides going to the gospel itself, at least read someone who believes Christ, and who has the courage to imagine that his is not just and institution or a collections of ideas, but a living reality -now as ever. Don't forget to check out George MacDonald (try "Life Essential" to start) and of course C.S. Lewis.

Expected A Blessing ... Did Not Disappoint!

I enjoyed reading all of the reviews for this book because it gave me confidence to want to buy (and read) it for myself ... and as my heading states "it did not disappoint."

Reading Peter Marshall's sermons allowed me to get to know him in a very surreal way because although I had never heard him speak - so, I was constantly picturing (and imagining) him handwriting each of these sermons.

Preparing a sermon is very personal and it comes with an insight and feelings that the writer, himself, had to have experienced and felt throughout his personal journey with God. So, this book allowed me to actually get a glimpse of Peter's relationship with the Father (his personal Father). At that point, I began to feel like I wasn't reading a sermon, but rather, I felt as though I was reading his personal journal (and that made it even more of a special treat)!

And of course, as I read "his journal" ... I also got a different perspective and appreciation for "the Master" or "Chief" (as Peter affectionately referred to Jesus as).

You simply KNOW truth when you read it because one of its characteristics is that the words and ideas that are read and conveyed seem TIMELESS - and that is exactly what this book is. As I said ... I enjoyed getting to see a glimpse inside of Peter's heart ... but, I appreciated seeing (and feeling) the Master's heart - even more! Absolutely timeless.

Very good, basic organizer with some extras

I was looking for something to hold my monthly bills and keep track of expenditures when I bought this. It's a nice size to hold my bills and has lots of space for writing in expenses. Others I've used in the past were either too big or too small. This one is right in between. We'll see if it still holds up by December! I especially like that, at the beginning of the book, you have a place to plan out a sort of budget to get you started on things. It has a lot of financial tips and information throughout. Very good little organizer!

In the Shadow of Jezebel

In The Shadow of Jezebel brings life to an Old Testament story I'd breezed over. Mesu Andrews has a gift for story telling that accentuates what is already there by engaging the imagination. She paints beautiful, detailed pictures of Biblical lives and times that make me want to dig into the Old Testament Scriptures and remind me of the beauty and wonder that is within.

I am always impressed by the extensive research Mesu obviously does for each book. I've read all of her books voraciously cover to cover. In the Shadow of Jezebel is no different. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and once I did I could not put it down.

We all need to be reminded how much God loves us and how He gently pursues us. We need to remember the strength we have in and through Him to be people of destiny, to change the landscape of the world we live in. We need to remember that our past doesn't define us, God's grace does.

Solomon's Quarries and the Secret Tunnel

In the Shadow of Jezebel is a well-crafted story rich with details of the historical, cultural, political, and religious events of ancient Judah during the time of the divided kingdom. Mesu Andrews combines historical and fictional characters to tell this story of a selfish young princess caught up in intrigue and betrayal, who grows into a strong and caring woman fulfilling a pivotal role in history.

Andrews researches extensively and is a master of the "What if". One of the story threads that caught my imagination dealt with the secret tunnel that lay under Yahweh's temple. An interesting chapter centered on the Urim and Thummin, items used in ancient Israel to determine the will of God in specific matters. And the training and interaction of priests and priestess in the temples of Melqart and Yahweh were very interesting. Most of the major characters are actual historical personages. Some of the secondary characters illustrated cultural interactions in ancient Judah; for example: Gadara, resident midwife in a brothel; Zibiah, prince Ahaziah's favorite among his wives; and Zabad, the young guard made chief keeper of the threshold, who felt unworthy due to his half-Ammonite heritage.

"In the Shadow of Jezebel" is a multi-dimensional tale, with charts and character lists to keep the reader straight on names and family relationships. Also suitable for book clubs, it's highly recommended for readers of Biblical Fiction and fans of Lynn Austin, T.L. Higley, Rebecca Kohn, Anita Diamante. Interesting, but Stressful Story

This was an interesting story about the palace intrigues and betrayals during the time of Jezebel. I can't imagine how horrible it would have been to not know who to trust and to constantly be on your guard. I felt sorry for Jehosheba as she felt torn between years of worshiping Baal and learning more of Yahweh, but also not wanting to anger her adoptive mother, the daughter of Jezebel, because of who she would hurt. I liked that we see Jehosheba grow as she learns to trust and love, not only her husband and Yahweh, but also two women she befriends. I really liked that each chapter had a Bible verse about what was going on in the story, so you could compare the true story with the fictionalized account. It was fascinating to see the role she played in Israel's history. I did find the story stressful because of the court politics and Jehosheba's wildly varying emotions, but it was interesting to learn more about this time period. I have read two other of Mesu's books and I didn't like this one quite as well as those, but she is a talented writer. If you like historical, especially Biblical fiction, you should check her out.
