Soul stirring

I have been on several book launch teams. I have read thousands of books. I have spoken, written and read millions of words. But never any like these. I’ve never had a book awaken something so deep within me. I’ve never been through 2 highlighters in one book. I’ve never fashioned an artistic board with each chapter of a book. With each page I turned my soul stirred, my eyes swelled, my thoughts went upward, and my knees went downward. This book will not open your eyes, it will something much more profound than that. This book will open your soul, to something lying embryonic.

I love how Leeana is able to give words to the wrestling in my heart. Her courage to do soul work is inspiring. As a soon to be mama of 4, I know how easy it is to get lost in the mix. I'm thankful for this book nudging me to rediscover what has been hiding.

Interesting cookbook

Enjoyed this cookbook and its references to the Potluck Club series. A few ingredient sizes and instructions are missing, however, so I can't recommend it for the inexperienced or beginning cook. Tried a couple recipes so far with very good results!

Nice Variety, I Found a Few that Will Become Part of My Recipe File

Well named cookbook that should appeal to the readers of the Potluck Club novel series.

I have a handful and a half of recipes that I plan to try or have tried.

24 Hour Coleslaw is fabulous and easy for those who like a vinegary coleslaw.

I had one recipe failure, Fudge Icing, which may have been user error (trust me, that happens).

Some of the other recipes out of the 125+ available I plan to make include: Shrimp Scampi, Oriental Skillet, Lemon Barbecued Chicken, French Toast Souffle, and Pasta Pizza Pie.

Most are party/gathering appropriate dishes. Some sound great for family dinners. A few use lower fat ingredients but many are full-fledged, full-fat potluck fare.

Recipe book collectors, Potluck Club fans and those looking for party dishes might want to check further into this cookbook. I'm giving it a three because I found less than 10 recipes I had to have.

Easy to Use

Having just read my first Potluck Club book, I looked forward to reviewing the accompanying cookbook. It did not disappoint. The recipes are easy to follow using food items found in most kitchens, with encouraging side notes like, "We always made this dish following the holidays. What a great thing to do with your leftover turkey." and "Here's a no-bake, easy-to-make panful of yum." and "This is one of my husband's very favorite cakes!"

It's organized so that any cook can find a new eating adventure to try. At the end, "Meet the Authors" is an interesting question/answer segment that fans will appreciate. It would be fun for a book club to read a Potluck Club book and hold the discussion meeting with members creating recipes found in this cookbook.

Any new cook or young bride would appreciate this as a gift. In addition, we old (ahem!) veteran cooks will rediscover foods we've tasted at potluck dinners.

Excellent book for any women - not just moms!

Dr Leman always writes in such a way that you are laughing one minute and deeply pondering the next. This book is easy to read in segments (parts at a time for busy moms) so you don't feel like you have to sit down and read it all in one sitting. His sense of humor is always great and I love that he gives tons of practical examples for everything he writes about. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned A LOT!

This is great book for Moms

I read it on my Ipad. My wife ordered it and I wanted to read up on stress as God just blessed us with our fourth baby and I felt stressed even though Scripture tells us not to let our hearts be troubled. This is great book for Moms, but husbands should read it too to give a glimpse of what their wives go through. As a husband, I am stressed too, but it is enlightening to read how Moms sometimes put unnecessary stress on themselves with their expectations. Leman offers good solutions to stress and isn't shy about making your spiritual life a priority! The life source is Christ and whenever Moms and Dads veer off from Him and the Word, then we can definitely expect stress. But take heart, we need all need reminders of what and Who are priorities should be!

Great practical advice for every mom

Before finishing the book, I was able to begin applying some of Dr. Leman's practical, no nonsense advice. When faced with a highly stressful situation, I called an "audible"! In a time when the situation would have ruined my whole day and night, I chose to see things differently and it made a huge difference in the way I handled the situation. I am so proud of me! Go me!

This is one of those books where you are not the same after you read it. I have to tell you this is a MUST read book! Every women I know needs to read this book.
I don't know what else to say about this book, besides, it's a life changing book that I hope and pray everyone goes out and gets a copy of.
This is a book that you will be happy to give to the women in your life for Christmas this year.
I gave this book 5 stars two times and I highly Recommend it.

No more stinkin thinkin

Are you guilty of negative thoughts towards yourself? I call this "stinkin' thinkin'" and I am guilty for sure! As I have gotten older and grown in my walk with the Lord, I have learned how VITAL it is to apply Gods Word when I am thinking negatively towards myself! This devotional is phenomenal in teaching you just that… at the end of each devotion, there is a "When I say this…. God says … " and let me tell you… These are AWESOME!!

The devotions are great as well! Renee has an amazing way to write and make you feel like you were having coffee right there with her. She is open, honest, and spoke right to my heart in these devotions.

This would be a WONDERFUL gift for ANY and ALL women you know! Teachers, Caretakers, Friends and Neighbors, Co-workers, Bank tellers… You get my drift ;) Seriously, this is a GREAT book and I recommend it HIGHLY!!

Let’s face it we all have our doubts ranging in size from little to incredibly huge. The Dictionary defines “doubt” as: “to be uncertain about; consider questionable or unlikely; hesitate to believe”. Once we doubt then we are either slow to action or we don’t do anything at all; we become immobilized. We need help to deal with our doubts, overcome them and move on in our lives and be pro-active rather than reactive as well. Renee Swope has provided a devotional to help us.

Put Your Man In God's Hands!

Sometimes it seems my husband works more then sleeps. His drive and desire to provide for his family is an honorable thing. They are traits to be admired, but being in overdrive means that he's sometimes overwhelmed. When he has a lot on his shoulders, the children and I feel it as well. Prayer helps to lift the weight.

I will never truly understand all that my husband and other men have to handle. I'm not equipped to do the things the way my husband does them but I am armed with something that makes all the difference -- prayer.

Kathi Lipp's book, Praying God's word for your husband is a resource every woman should have. Sometimes we can't find the right words to say, but we don't have to. GOD'S word is readily available to us. Lipp reminds us of key scriptures and breaks down areas where our husbands may need extra prayer. One of my favorite sections is "Understanding God's Plan For His Life And Dreams."

Every wife can use Lipp's book as a guide in your marriage and your husband's journey.

How to Pray the Scriptures on Your Husband's Behalf

I admit, when it comes to praying for my husband, I am often stumped and stick to the basics: "Please, Lord, keep him safe...help him do well at work and enjoy his job...help me to be a good wife..." and so on. Since he was not a Christian when we were first married, I was forever petitioning, begging, pleading God for his salvation, but once the prayer was answered and he began to know the Lord, I tended to forget that my "prayer warrior" work wasn't done yet.

Therefore, I was glad to review Praying God's Word for Your Husband by Kathi Lipp when Baker Publishing offered me the book. In these pages, Kathi walks us through various aspects, circumstances, challenges in the lives of our husbands and how we not only can pray for them but pray God's Word back to Him in our prayers. Why do this? As Kathi points out on page 33: "I was praying Scripture, so I didn't have to wonder if it was God's will. I was praying the promises that God had set out in his Word. Praying Scripture over my husband gave me a new freedom in my petitions to God."

I found this book to be a great resource in not only learning how to pray Scripture but how to apply it to specific circumstances in my husband's life. I also loved that there was a section in the book on how to pray for an unbelieving husband, since I think a lot of prayer references tend to leave this possibility out. I also enjoyed having the Scriptures and instruction broken out by circumstance/situation, because it makes for an easy reference when there is something in particular I want to pray about (employment, relationships, parenting, worry). This is more than a read once book, but a reference to keep handy as an aid in being an effective prayer partner for your husband.

Prayer. You may be thinking not another book on prayer! Then again you may be thinking," I have been praying for my husband and it didn't change a thing". Perhaps it changed you or your husband. You might think you don't need another book telling you "how to" when you struggle just get through the day liking him let alone loving him. Maybe you're like me in that you feel some guilt because what "should" be done is not what you are doing. Don't go just yet. Read on and see if you receive encouragement from the Word of God to help direct your prayer time. After all, it isn't about "should have" or "could have" or even "would have". It is all about conversing with God in a deeper way than just a quick prayer before you lose your temper, although those don't hurt either.
One of the lessons we ladies forget is that we aren't responsible to change our husbands, wouldn't you agree? Oh, I am not saying we don't want to, but what I am saying is God doesn't hold us responsible to change them, but to just be willing to allow Him to change us. Now perhaps a thought just flashed in your mind that went something like this: "Why am I always the one who has to change? Why not pick on him for a change God?" Ever feel that way? I have and I struggle sometimes with it too. However, God hasn't made us to be "mothers" to our husbands. What He has made us to be are helpmates. God did say it wasn't good for man to be alone, which it isn't unless He calls you to a life without a mate. Then, it is a different ball game altogether.
One of the author's thoughts on page 20 I found quite thought provoking. Maybe it may help you too. "God is not looking for us to impress him with our prayers, but he does want us to be open to letting him impress our hearts." Well, what do think about that statement? Maybe we don't pray because we can't seem to get past the many ways we think we "ought" to do something. Yet God in His infinite wisdom gave us His Word that we can use as a guide for when we pray to Him. There are many ways to use this guide, which is full of Scripture and prayers for our use in our time with the Lord. The author suggests many ways to use the guide such as in a small group setting or with another friend. However you choose to use it, the main thing is being consistent in praying for your husband. Prayer can sometimes be a threatening activity in a room of people or even with one friend. Why is that?
We women for the most part love to talk; some are more extroverted than others. When it comes to prayer though, we tend to hear what others are saying and compare ourselves, thinking we don't "measure up". Maybe it is threatening because it deals with the heart and we prefer to keep people on the outside because we think once they see the inside they will bolt. Perhaps some of you have had your heart broken by that very action, either you felt judged or were judged or you lost a person's respect once they saw the "real you". In either case, while it is risky to share your deepest heart with some person, don't keep you to you. God has a wonderful way of bringing the right person into your life to share Himself with you in that friendship and vice versa. Allow God to help you get past the "front porch" of your heart so you can experience the inner Presence in the deepest places of your heart.

About the Author
Ronald Boyd-MacMillan (M.Div., Fuller Theological Seminary) has more than twenty-one years of experience interacting with the persecuted church as a researcher, minister, and journalist. He began serving with Open Doors International in 1982 and has worked as the associate director of research for Eastern Europe, the Asia bureau chief for News Network International, and the Asia bureau Chief of Compass Direct, the only news agency in the world dedicated exclusively to reporting the plight of persecuted Christians worldwide. He is now writer-at-large for Open Doors International and resides in Edinburgh, Scotland.

A valuable addition to the library of any pastor, seminarian, missionary or mission candidate

Most of us have heard the stories in our churches --- stories about the suffering endured by Christians around the world because of their faith. We call these believers the "persecuted church," and many of us would like to do something, anything, to help them out. But before we make a move, we would all do well to set aside a few hours and read Ronald Boyd-MacMillan's FAITH THAT ENDURES, one of the most comprehensive books about religious persecution that I have ever come across. It truly is "the essential guide to the persecuted church."

Boyd-MacMillan, a writer with Open Doors International, a ministry that assists persecuted believers, has been reporting on and ministering to suffering Christians for some 20 years. In that time, he has acquired not only a wealth of information but also a wealth of wisdom about what persecution is, who is being persecuted and why, and what the rest of us can, and should not, do about it. Part investigative journalism, part exposé, part rallying cry, his book covers an extraordinary amount of territory.

That territory includes an examination of what persecution looks like in places such as Muslim Kurdistan, Hindu India and communist China, among others; an extensive and thorough discussion on the legal and biblical definitions of persecution (the author's definition: "any hostility, experienced from the world, as a result of one's identification with Christ...[including] hostile feelings, attitudes, words, and actions"); a description of the primary places where persecution is found today and the forms that persecution takes; analysis of the lessons we can learn from the persecuted; and a vitally important section on how we can help the persecuted church that in my view should be required reading for anyone who wants to help, especially those who feel called to share the gospel in areas that are hostile to the Christian faith.

As the author continually emphasizes, the issues and situations are often so complex that well-intended Christians who do not understand the complexities and nuances often end up doing more harm than good --- and in the aftermath, the already persecuted believers end up paying an even higher price.

Throughout, the author offers anecdotal examples of the varieties of persecution that exist, from outright assassination to loss of family support as a result of a person's conversion to Christ or Christian activities. But while so many other books focus on either those who were martyred or those who triumphed, this one gives equal time to those who, without any recognition, have endured unimaginable hardship and cruelty. "If all you focus on is the story of the martyrs, you will never understand the story of the persecuted church," Boyd-MacMillan writes. "Martyrdom is the dazzling tip of the iceberg that hides the dark bulk of the body."

FAITH THAT ENDURES should prove to be a valuable addition to the library of any pastor, seminarian, missionary or mission candidate, as well as those Christians whose eyes and hearts have been opened to the plight of those who are oppressed because of their faith. Highly recommended.

The author does an excellent job sharing the realities of the persecuted church in layman's terms. Not only does he inform but he challenges and explains the many complications of helping the persecuted church. It is an informative read for anyone but a must read for all Christians.

God is good all the time

Trying circumstances can either make a person better or bitter. This is the story of a family who becomes better when they are thrust abruptly into a severe trial. By God's grace, the Vaughns responded with faith and trusted in Him who is the same yesterday, today and forever - a God who is loving and good. They learned to say, as Job did, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust Him." This book will help you take your eyes off yourself and put them on Christ - it will help you think eternally.

About the Author
Gary Smalley is one of the country's best known authors and speakers on family relationships. He is the bestselling and award-winning author or coauthor of 16 books, along with several popular films and videos. He has spent over 30 years learning, teaching, and counseling, speaking to over 2 million people in live conferences. Smalley has appeared on national television programs such as Oprah, Larry King Live, Extra, The Today Show, and The Sally Jessy Raphael Show, as well as numerous national radio programs. Gary and his wife, Norma, have been married for 50 years and live in Branson, Missouri. They have three children and six grandchildren.

Ted Cunningham is the founding pastor of Woodland Hills Community Church in Branson, Missouri. Woodland Hills was planted in 2002 and received a Purpose Driven Church Health Award in 2006. Ted is a speaker with the Smalley Relationship Center and coauthor of The Language of Sex and From Anger to Intimacy. He is a graduate of Liberty University and Dallas Theological Seminary. We are finding it to be great for spurring lots of meaningful

We are using this book in a small group setting that focuses on marriage. We are finding it to be great for spurring lots of meaningful, meaty discussions within couples and the whole group. The video is a must for leading a class or group as Dr. Smalley and Mr. Cunningham are entertaining and down-to-earth, giving perfectly timed sessions that create the ideal atmosphere of openness while allowing for discussion in an hour meeting. Be prepared to devote plenty of time to reading and reflection between sessions, though. This is not a quick study if it is followed as laid out.

Full of treasures for the reader

Elisabeth Elliot is one of my wife's favorite authors. This book has been around for a few years but it is full of short readings or meditations which reveal the wonderful truths found in the Bible. I recommend this little book to both men and women.

A Lamp Unto My Feet: The Bible's Light For Your Daily Walk

This is a combined work of all Elisabeth Elliot's journals of her quiet time. I really enjoy having this book because it helps me with my own quiet time. Each entry is short yet full of things to meditate upon; the things written are about daily trial, Christian faith, the fruit of the spirit, struggles with the world and everything that Christians will experience in one way or the other. I recommend this book along with the Holy Bible; read this in the morning and it will help you to set your focus on God right from the beginning, which may be encouraging for you throughout your day. Psalm 119:9 "How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word." Dear Christian readers, grow spiritually, abide in Him, produce fruits through His grace, and let our conducts be different from the world.
Another Elisabeth Elliot's book I would like to recommend is called "The Music of His Promises"

Reflections from the Lamp

I have read Elisabeth Elliot’s A Lamp for My Feet at least a half dozen times in the past twenty years, but turned to it again at the outset of 2015. Like an old friend, its words are familiar to me, and my copy is underlined and dog-eared and covered with scrawled verse references. It’s a simple little book based on Elisabeth Elliot’s own personal devotions with six months of daily reflections on whatever Scripture she happened to be reading at the time.

Although I own and have read (and re-read) nearly everything Elisabeth has written, this book is in my top three, and in many ways, I have been mentored through her writing. I began reading her books with a dictionary nearby — her vocabulary far surpassed mine. I have never met her, although I did go to hear her speak once, but was, frankly, too intimidated to go to the book table and talk to her. By that time, she was in her early seventies and had acquired the bearing and the force of character that one would associate with Huldah, the Old Testament prophetess in King Josiah’s day, (see II Kings 22:14-20).

During the mid-90’s Elisabeth had a daily radio program, so while I was raising babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, I arranged my mornings around Gateway to Joy. A Lamp for My Feet covers those themes for which Elisabeth was so well known: obedience, the sovereignty of God, sacrifice, and suffering. Her Christianity was of the bracing and invigorating variety that sustained the heroes she looked up to as a child and wrote about as an adult — the likes of Amy Carmichael, Lilias Trotter, and Gladys Aylward, all pioneer missionaries.

Known for being blunt and emphatic, Elisabeth Elliot brooked no excuses and suffered no whiners. Her second husband Addison Leitch said once that some people call a spade a spade, but Elisabeth called it a bloody shovel. In the seventies, when everyone else was talking about feminism, she was talking about femininity. Her life was a spectacular balance of assertiveness and submission, and the fleet of present-day complementarian bloggers are among her spiritual grandchildren. What I came to understand about Elisabeth Elliot is that she spoke with the certainty of one who had stepped into obedience enough times, who had chosen the way of faith often enough to learn the secret that the resulting joy and the deepening intimacy with God is priceless. I find it nearly impossible to mourn her passing, because she is now experiencing the fruit of her surrendered life.

Her exhortation in the introduction to A Lamp for My Feet is classic Elisabeth Elliot: “If you have only five minutes, don’t read my book, read God’s. It will be a lamp for your feet.”
