Sadly, not a bodice-ripper

The quaint village of Stow-on-the-Wold, in the heart of England's Cotswolds, is the idyllic setting for this romance novel. Sydney Barrington, a young and successful CEO from America has just learned that she has inherited a stately English manor house - from a total stranger. She comes to Stow to investigate and makes several startling discoveries: First, the manor's owner is still very much alive, the house is an ersatz orphanage, an IRA terrorist is lurking nearby, and the young lord of the manor is a drop-dead-gorgeous commander in the Royal Navy.

This story succeeds as an enticing travel guide to the beautiful Cotswolds, and to Stow in particular. Having spent time in this charming village years ago, I was anxious to revisit it in these pages. The glowing descriptions of the gently rolling hills, yellow with limestone, and the old thatched-roofed cottages made me smile, and for that alone, I can say I enjoyed the book. The plot, however is silly and the writing is amateurish. There is a huge cast of characters, each with his own overly-intricate subplot; the rather thin story is so jam-packed with information that it topples under the weight. The dialogue has no British slang or expressions. Add to that, the fact that all the characters - strangers, it would seem, initially - ultimately turn out to have had close relationships in the past seems way too contrived. The romance angle isn't fully developed and seems almost an after-thought.

It's a tepid story that fails to engage the reader, except to leave one with a burning desire - no, need - to visit the beautiful Cotswolds and stroll beside the babbling Windrush, and watch the sheep graze in bucolic splendor. Recommended only for undemanding readers.

Kathleen Morgan begins her riveting highland historical novel, Wings of Morning, on Regan MacLaren's wedding night. When the clansmen bring their drunken laird, who is Regan's foster brother, to their bedchamber, Roddy is both brutal and awkward in his attempts to consummate the marriage. Regan flees, and when he cannot find her, he decides to make peace by bringing her an expensive gift--stolen from the flocks and herds of the neighboring Campbell clan. Instead, they bring Roddy back laid out on his plaid, killed by Ian Campbell after a surrender, according to Roddy's brother, Walter, who has become the new laird of the clan.

When Regan tries to prevent Walter's ambush of Ian Campbell, she loses her way, falls, and loses her memory. She does not remember who she is, that she is the abandoned heiress of the wealthy Drummond clan, the widow of murdered Roddy MacLaren, or that she hates Ian Campbell. Campbell's peasants bring her to Ian's estate where he and his mother nurse her back to health. As the godly Ian and she spend time together, love grows, and Regan finds in Ian's mother the mother-figure missing in her own life.

The return of Regan's memory, the distrust of Ian's cousin Niall, the hunger for power of her cousin William Drummond, the commands of Queen Mary, and the schemes of Walter MacLaren threaten Ian's and Regan's budding love.

Kathleen Morgan weaves a fascinating tale of highland romance. Though I have read little historical fiction in the past few years, I scoped out free moments to pick up her book. Her characters are well drawn: Ian, strong, handsome and godly, with a clear idea of what he wants; Regan, a distrustful and vulnerable survivor; William Drummond, the power-hungry man intent on not losing his position to Regan; and the grasping, unscrupulous Walter. My only suggestion would be that Morgan make some of the Scottish words a little more understandable, such as "tanist."

Morgan, the winner of the 2002 Rose Award for Best Inspirational Romance and author of several romances, delivers again. Fans of historical fiction or of Scotland will enjoy this book. - Debbie W. Wilson, Christian Book Previews.com

An engaging romance

In WINGS OF MORNING, the second installment of These Highland Hills, Kathleen Morgan offers up her own trademark brand of historical romantic fare that, while engaging, requires turning a blind eye to some cliched plot elements.

Morgan picks up from the first book in the series, CHILD OF THE MIST, which introduced us to the feuding, superstitious world of the Scottish Highlands in the 1500s. In it, we met Niall Campbell and Anne MacGregor and followed their tempestuous marriage. In this sequel, Niall's brother Iain takes center stage. We're also introduced to the 17-year-old orphaned Regan Drummond, who has been raised by the MacLaren clan and is now to be wed to her best friend, Roddy MacLaren.

However, on her wedding night Regan discovers Roddy's darker side. Inexplicably, she's angry with him for getting drunk, but a few paragraphs before, she's urging him to down some wine before he comes to their marriage bed. After fleeing from her new husband (and conveniently staying a virgin), she is stunned the next morning when she discovers Roddy has been murdered. Her new brother-in-law, Walter, vows vengeance on Iain Campbell, who Walter says killed Roddy. But we're already pretty sure who has killed whom.

Regan rides out on horseback and ends up in an accident, which lands her at the Campbells' castle suffering from amnesia. She's nursed back to health (can you say PRIDE & PREJUDICE?) and falls in love with the kind, handsome laird Iain, whose gotten over his love for Anne from book one and is ready to turn his attentions elsewhere. Kathleen Morgan knows how to weave sexual tension throughout her novels, and the romance heats up nicely between Regan and Iain.

Disappointingly, amnesia has been so overused as a plot device that the reader can't help but feel this is an easy way to make the story move along. Regan predictably regains her memory just before the Queen visits, and she's able to bring her murder accusations against Iain directly to the authorities. The reader is left scratching her head at this point, wondering why a woman who loved Iain so desperately would desire to avenge her husband of one night by seeing her love interest executed for murder. It's also a bit unbelievable that Iain's family continues with varying levels of affection to care for Regan, who is now trying to unjustly (but justly in her mind) accuse the kind and generous Iain. To say the reader needs to suspend disbelief is to state it lightly.

Some of the Scottish terminology (as in CHILD OF THE MIST) is confusing (a glossary would be helpful) and, when it is frequently used, detracts from the smooth pacing of the book ("Weesht" is enjoyable the first time, but gets old quickly.) There's the unavoidable comparison of a woman to a horse, which unfortunately appeared in CHILD OF THE MIST (this time, it's "Bridle the filly before she takes the bit, and she's forever out of control.") It's a tired analogy that is used far too often in romance novels.

Despite these missteps, Morgan excels at including some nice historical details, including a section on roses --- which might slow down an uninterested reader --- but as a gardener, I found it absorbing. Her settings are usually well-described, "the heath washing the hills in lavender and pink, the sparkling burns flowing through the glens, and the eagles soaring overhead."

If historical fiction readers can suspend their disbelief about some of the plot elements, they should find this an engaging romance.

terrific sixteenth century Scottish romance

In 1556 heiress Regan MacLaren marries her childhood friend Drummond, but halts their lovemaking when her drunken groom acts brutish in front of his equally intoxicated friends and brother Walter. The next day Regan learns that Drummond was murdered by the laird of Clan Campbell Iain when he went on a raid to obtain a bride gift for her, was caught, surrendered, and was cowardly killed. Walter demands justice, but insists their poor clan cannot obtain such from the likes of the mighty Campbells. Instead he waits to abduct Iain at an opportune moment when they can bring him stealthily to justice at their keep.

Regan worries when Walter leads a party to snatch Iain so she follows. She stumbles and is found by Iain's men who bring the injured woman to their chieftain. Regan suffers from amnesia, but quickly Iain and her fall in love. However, once she learns who she is, she will need to decide between her clan in marriage or the Campbells not realizing that Walter plans to take away her choices.

WINGS OF MORNING is a terrific sixteenth century Scottish romance starring a delightful cast that brings to life the feuds and pacts of These Highlands Hills. The story line contains a bit of a mystery as to whether Iain really murdered Drummond and if not who did, but clearly the relationship between the laird and the amnesiac make for a fun tale as he wonders what will happen to them once she regains her memory. The return of the lead couple from CHILD OF THE MIST augments a fine historical tale that will have readers pondering how the diabolical Walter will bring justice to Iain and take Regan as his.

Fair romance, poor espionage

Main characters are drawn well and interaction is pretty well-written, but the biggest struggle of the book comes from a lack of complications to move the plot forward. If this were just a romance, it would have received a higher rating from me, but the lack of real danger in a plot line centered on espionage kept the book unconvincing. Internal personal struggles reigned supreme and were written pretty well, but left a glaring hole where more significant external struggle should have been present. Perceived danger was left as only perceived except in one instance. The book would have been improved if a tangible villain or two had been fleshed out.

Masterful writer!

I'm beginning to feel like a broken record where this author is concerned. Her writing is consistently good. But my review won't tell you what the book is about. You can read that in the synopsis.

I truly enjoyed this story and found it to be a real page turner. She had me hooked right from the first chapter. Ruth has a way of making her stories feel so real - like I'm right there in the room with the hero and heroine. I kept thinking, as I was reading, 'how does she come up with this stuff?' It was just so real to me. Nothing about it feels forced or made up. It all flows so naturally and realistically.

I can only imagine the amount of research that went into this story. Nobody does the Regency period as well as this author. Her knowledge of this historical period knows no bounds and it shows in her work.

This book is a Christian Romance but I didn't feel like it was shoved in my face like so many Christian Romance novels do today. I felt Rees' faith without having him spew scripture verses to me at every turn. He lived his faith! I liked both Rees and Celine very much. I'm hoping a bit of their continued story will be included in book 2.

The only negative for me was that I would have liked a little more kissing. The first one was so good that I wanted more. :-)

Intriguing Romance

This book was a wonderful read. Kept wondering how it would all end. Ruth did such a good job of developing the characters, even the secondary ones. They felt like real people, especially Valentine. Their personalities and choices were appropriately designed to provoke the right emotions from a reader.

I must say Ruth is very skilled in the storytelling craft. I kept wondering how the story would end in a tolerable way and I must express my satisfaction at how it did.

The emotions provoked in this book are so strong that sometimes I felt I was there somewhere in the scenes, standing at a corner and watching the events right before my eyes! And if I really were, then I must say that don't let the book cover fool you. Celine, the main lady character, is a lot prettier than she appears on the cover (at least that's what my mind says!) lol. I only wish Rees were on the cover too. But hey, I'm quite satisfied with the image my mind conjured up and wouldn't want any pictures messing it up anyway. Point is, Ruth did a marvelous job in describing her characters--loved it!

And all I can say about Celine's and Rees' love story is that it is very, very intriguing. If you want a clean/inspirational romance full of intrigue, I beg you please, go for this one. You won't be disappointed. I must be clear though that if you are interested in this book for the espionage, there isn't much about it. It is more about the romance story of these two people.

Great Survey on Some Big Emotions

James Dobson consistently presents sound counseling principles from psychology with a Christian foundation, and he does it again in this book. The book does not cover emotions exhaustively, but is made up four main sections on the emotions of guilt, romantic love, anger, and impressions to interpret God's will. Really sound advice and great discussion. I was most helped by the principles presented in the romantic love section and the interpreting God's will section. In the future I will definitely consult this resource on this topic, and I recommend this book for all interested in the subject matter.

Dan Britton serves as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' executive vice president of international ministry and training at the National Support Center in Kansas City. He has been on FCA staff since 1991. Must-read for Couples - Great Insight!

I'm a bonafide fan of Florence Littauer. After reading Personality Plus and finding out a lot about myself, I decided to read this book and get some insight regarding my relationship with my hubby.
We've known each other for over 30 years, though we've only been married about half that, yet this book showed me things about my husband that I didn't recognize before (or didn't want to see!).
My husband's personality has a lot of Peaceful Phlegmatic, with some Perfect Melancholy and a smattering of the other two. Reading this book helped me to see why some of our (ahem) 'discussions' went the way that they did. There's great info here for anyone who would like to understand their partner's personality and how it relates to their own.
I definately recommend this book to couples, as it's a great way to find ways to relate to each other differently without pointing fingers or laying blame. This book, as all of Florence's are, is affirming and positive, and even a little humourous. No heavy treatment of a potentially 'serious' subject here, you'll be entertained as well as educated and have some real 'aha' moments.
Get this book and I highly recommend the 'Personality Plus - How to Understand Others by Understanding Yourself' book as well. They'll become well-used manuals in your relationship library.

My marriage was in a very rough place, in fact I was planning to divorce, when a friend introduced me to Florence Littauer's books.

My husband irritated me, everything about him had begun to rub me the wrong way. I felt like nothing would ever change, and it was hopeless. This book was instrumental in helping me understand why we were so different, and why he acted and behaved the way he did. I am Choleric with some melancholy, and he is Phlegmatic with some melancholy. It showed me my own strengths and weaknesses, and how to understand, accept, and appreciate my husband's strengths and weaknesses.

their experiences with God as he prepares to take them home

We often wonder what death is really like. In her new book, More Glimpses of Heaven, Trudy Harris provides insights into what really goes on at death and how it is not something to be feared, but something that quite literally brings us closer to God.
Harris, who has worked as a hospice nurse for more than 30 years, shares how God has worked in the lives of 46 patients as they neared death. Each of their stories is a testament to the fact that God is never far from us--especially in death--and illustrates the lengths to which God will go to so that we understand his compassionate love for us. Whether by intuitive understanding, divine encounter or through the touch of ordinary individuals, God's compassion and comforting love are revealed to each person as he reaches out and calls them home.

Anyone that knows me knows why I chose to review this book; I LIVED it! My father was diagnosed with cancer in January of 1981. He was placed in Hospice in August the same year and passed away in early September-with me at his side. I was living at home (and only 18 years old), which allowed me the opportunity to care for him easily. I tried on a few occasions to allow my dad the opportunity to open up to me-to tell me anything he wanted me to know, just in case..... Well, you know, in case he didn't make it. But my dad would NEVER admit he wasn't going to BEAT THIS! And, as his baby, I was in no position to tell him he wouldn't (nor did I want to believe it myself!) As a matter of fact, I still remember the day before he passed away; I put his frail body in a wheel-chair and took him for a "spin" around the hospital grounds. He looked up at me, and reminded me that I was NOT A RACE CAR driver and that I needed to slow down. I just couldn't - I was so proud to have him OUT OF THAT BED! He was GOING to recover, by golly! Needless to say, he didn't. It took many years and many tears to be able to accept that.

Over the past year (that's right, it's 2010), I have been involved in a grief group; realizing time does NOT necessarily heal all wounds. Sometimes, we can "stuff" our pain so far inside; we realize years later it was NEVER dealt with. That was the case for me. I could go on and on about my dad because it provides comfort for me to share about my loss, but I won't. However, I can say, from a very real and personal opinion, this book is absolutely amazing!

Will it make you cry? Possibly. Will it make you think? Possibly. Will it remind you of your loved one? I would say absolutely! It reminded me that my dad is with his Father in Heaven and the only person that's sad about it is ME! He is at complete peace, reveling in His Father's Love! That revelation is very comforting to me! I also took great comfort reading about others who share my story. Although some of the details are different, many are similar. It brings me comfort to know someone else can relate to my journey; that I'm really not alone.
