Whatsoever Things Are Lovely: Must-Have Accessories for God's Perfect PeaceRhonda is gifted writer and speaker and like her other books, I can't put it down once I start reading. Rhonda has a way of weaving everything that happens in life in what you do, say, wear, eat, cook etc... into a learning and ministering experience of God's word. Written in such a way that you are rolling with laughter and warmly filled in God's love.

Making a Transformed Life Fashionable

Rhonda Rhea is my new favorite author. This book packs a powerful punch that you may not expect, given the fun, conversational tone. The stories she shares are laugh-out loud funny (even in the acknowledements!)but the message is still crystal clear. The accessories Rhonda exhorts her readers to wear are the spiritual qualities Paul describes in the Bible. So while the book may seem pretty light-hearted, it's very profound. Rhonda's style is so engaging, her insights so fresh and her applications so incredibly relevant for my life, I'm going to put her other books next on my reading list. I LOVE this book.

I think "Slow Moon Rising" is Eva Marie Everson's best work to date. This is the end of the series and Ms. Everson takes us out with a high note. This is a story about the twenty year difference in age romance between Ross and Anise and how they made it work. This is the story of Ross's four daughters, their problems and how God leads them to resolution. "Slow Moon Rising", to me, is a lot like looking at a tapestry, on the one side is the beautiful artistry that we can stare at for hours and on the other side are the knots and weaves that it takes to make the tapestry. Each character is unforgettable and we come to root for each one. "Slow Moon Rising" is a story about family and a wonderful family at that.

Slow Moon Rising

"Slow Moon Rising" is the final book in Everson's Cedar Keys series. Those who have read the previous two novels in the series may experience a bit of deja vu as they read because some of the details were also included in the other novels. "Slow Moon Rising" begins several months after the death of Ross Claybourne's wife Joan. The narrative moves from the point of view of one Claybourne woman to another as each one relates events in the family's life through her own observations and the story spans several years. The conclusion wraps everything up with long held secrets revealed and problems resolved.

This conclusion to the Cedar Keys series tackles several difficult topics including infidelity, alcoholism, and grief. I felt that it was an excellent illustration of the damage that can be caused by hiding the truth when total transparency can quickly open the door to forgiveness and moving on with one's life. Each one of the Claybourne daughters had been affected in one way or another because of the atmosphere of coverup and denial in which they grew up.

"Slow Moon Rising" has a very serious theme and is not exactly what I would describe as entertaining. It is probably not what one would choose for a light and happy beach read. However the nuggets of truth and the valuable lessons in life laid out in this novel made it a very worthwhile investment of a few hours of my time. A story of family, forgiveness, reconciliation, and relationships, "Slow Moon Rising" is a book to remember, especially when your own life seems difficult.

Excellent --and difficult-- reads!

All three of Eva Marie Everson's Cedar Key novels are worthy of five stars, in my opinion. Her stories and characters are well developed. And so difficult (in places) to absorb, because they hit close-to-home with those of us who share "issue" struggles with some of her characters. I had to stop reading the ending of the third book, and take paragraphs at a time because I was afraid of suffocating on my tears. (Understand that I was reading via my Kindle app in bed, on my side, under the covers. Crying and lying on one's side do not comprise a good breathing exercise.)

The settings in the books are lovely, and before you know it, you're drawn into not just the setting, but the scene, the lives of the characters, the sometimes gritty details, the very human emotions. These are books about faith. But if you're looking for sweet, pat answers to life's big questions, don't look here. Expect to be moved to laughter and tears. Expect to see yourself. Expect to learn that people of faith struggle with the journey, too. Their faith keeps them coming back to the pathway home, even when they fall, because they know where their real Home is. And they know that their faith doesn't make them perfect. Just forgiven. With that forgiveness comes a responsibility: to offer forgiveness to others. Even those who don't deserve it. Because not one of us does. It's called mercy and grace. And it's amazing!

Should be called new kid by Thursday!

This book saved me. What is more embarrassing than your mother-in-law buying you a book on parenting, but I was so desperate I picked it up and read it in 2 nights. I started implementing the ideas immediately and get this....I saw an instant change in my daughter's behavior! I was in this huge battle with her everyday and didn't even see how wrong I was to try and do battle with a 3 year old, but she is so strong-willed and I dug my heels in. I was going about it all wrong. I am so incredibly grateful for this book! I started reading it on Saturday night and saw such a significant change in her behavior by Thursday!! I liked how the book gave very specific and useful techniques and how I didn't ever get mad or angry like I was before. I just needed to refine my skills. I have read Dr. Leman's book, Sheet Music, and now I can say I'm a fan. Sheet music saved my marriage, and this book saved my relationship with my daughter. I would highly recommend it!

Mixed Feelings.

I don't know, I wasn't as enthralled by this book as most people. I think it is very hard to write a book that pertains to all ages because parenting changes drastically as children get older.

Personally, I can't stand the parenting psychobabble that's out there. The self-esteem movement and the "anything you say or do as a parent will damage them forever" concepts that radiate on parenting blogs and websites today. It has led to households where parents are afraid to parent their child. On a good note, this book is not that. I agree with the author's parenting philosophy. However, I didn't find too many new ideas in the book to help me along. Granted, much of the book and questions in the back are geared towards issues of older children. Mine are 6, 4, and 2.

For example, the "Say it once and walk away" concept is great if you have one child. But when you have multiple children, I'm not going to do this and let the uncooperative child ruin the activities of the others. If I'm trying to get all the children in the car to get to a piano lesson for child A, and child C is being uncooperative, I'm not going to let Child C control the situation by not allowing Child A to go to their piano lesson. Currently, I would just ask again with a consequence to Child C (ie...."You have two minutes to get your shoes on....if you are not in the car you may not bring a toy with you" for example). And it does work temporarily, but I was hoping to hear more ideas or other solutions to situations like this.

I do disagree with the author on some points. One I remember is this often-used philosophy of "if your child throws a tantrum in the store you should leave your cart right there and exit the store." I do not get this AT ALL. Why should I let a 3 year old control whether or not I'm allowed to go grocery shopping? If they learn that by throwing a tantrum we get to leave, what have I accomplished?

There is also a lot of money involved in his suggestions. For example, "if the child doesn't clean their room, the sister or mom should do it for then and they'll have to pay sister or mom out of the allowance." This is fine for older kids, but my 6 year old doesn't get much of an allowance, doesn't really fully understand the concept of the value of money, and I think would honestly rather pay me his 50 cents allowance than clean up himself. I can see this working with a 12-year-old or teenager who needs money to hang out with friends or buy that item they've been saving up for. But for a 6 year old, I need some different ideas. Along the same lines, many suggestions for changing behavior have to do with leaving the child out of "fun" activities, like leaving them home when they are acting up or mouthing off. Obviously I can't do that with young children. I do make them "sit out" on the bench with me if we go to the park, or maybe they have to sit with us while the rest of the family gets ice cream and they don't. But, I guess I was just hoping for some new ideas.

We do fit the "authoritative" parenting style Dr. Leman's says is ideal and MOST days are great days with our kids. We kind of have worked into a good family routine and system up until now and had things down pretty well. But as our eldest child grows older and becomes more independent and headstrong we are needing to adapt our parenting style. Our biggest issue right now is with our 6-year-old talking back, sassiness, and sarcasm.

After reading the book, I still don't have any new ideas for dealing with this. If I ask him to clean his room, and he says "No, I don't want to!" the suggestion in the book is to say it once, walk away, and the next time they want something say "no" even if it is several hours later. Let them know if they are going to be disrespectful and disobedient, than you will not fulfill their requests. That's fine for the most part, but I don't always have the luxury of time. Sometimes I need things done right now. There are no suggestions for dealing with that (beyond do it yourself and take it out of their allowance which won't work for us either right now). Plus, when a child is intentionally rude, mean, disrespectful, and hurtful, I am out of ideas for dealing with it. I already kind of followed the principles the book suggests. I pretty much send the child away (to time out or their room), and welcome them back once their attitude has been corrected and they apologize. For particularly bad situations, I take away privileges and/or leave them to do formally "mom" activities on their own. A common saying in our house is that "our love in unconditional, but your privileges are conditional." So if they are not going to be part of the team, talk with kindness and respect, then they don't get the benefits of the team until their attitude improves. A child that is disrespectful in our house will not be getting the family dinner, but will be making their own (which is basically cereal or a sandwich at this age), will be doing their own laundry, cleaning rooms by themselves (which we all normally do together), etc. While this is occurring we have good conversations with the child and he clearly gets the concept of what led to the consequence. It just doesn't seem to be taking hold long-term. Perhaps I'm expecting too much too soon.

I also found the author chose to speak to some unnecessary topics. Extended breastfeeding and Homeschooling are two in particular. Regarding EBF, he basically said moms should stop at one year. I do agree with one point that if the mother is doing it for the mother only than that is not a good reason. But medical science clearly touts the benefits of EBF for the child, so making a generalized "after a year is enough" statement is really kind of ridiculous. He also writes a section on homeschooling (he is not a homeschooler) where he gives his opinion on how school needs to happen in the home. His suggestion is really to imitate the public school structure and schedule in the home. If you talk to most leaders and average families in the homeschool world, this is exactly what they are trying to avoid. It is just a silly topic for a non-homeschooler to take on in a few paragraphs. It should have just been left out.

I do think this book is worth reading. If you only pick up a few ideas here and there than that's ok. It is a quick read and has some good concepts. I suppose with all the good reviews I was just expecting a little more. But, for some families with children at the right ages, the book is likely very helpful.

If anyone has good suggestions for parenting books (faith-based is fine) for children in the 5-10 age range, I'd love to hear suggestions.

New Kid by Friday

My best friend, a Mother of 6 year old twins & a 3 year old couldn't stop talking about how this book, HAVE A NEW KID BY FRIDAY, made her a new Mom and changed her kids behavior. I thought sure, but you don't have teenagers like me. She insisted that I could use some of the strategies and techniques too, so I picked up the book. Dr. Leman has such a firm, lighthearted way of describing his interventions even with teens. I especially liked his simple strategy of "Say it once, Turn your back, & walk away! Now I have more good times with my kids and our family has become so calm and peaceful. What a great attitude change I have seen in my 2 teens. If you want to have more positive relationships with your kids, I highly recommend this book!

No Cardboard Christian Cut-outs

This is the way Christian fiction should be written. No cardboard Christian cut-outs of sweet angelic women none of us can relate to. These women are real, just the kind of women I find in my own community. We/they are real, they struggle with their faith and how to live it out in the real world with real life problems and in real life situations. After reading this book you will be affirmed as I was not only as a woman, but as an authentic Christian woman. This book does not hit you over the head with a preachy message, but through the lives of these women you will see real faith, lived out in the real world, from real women. No cardboard Christian cut-outs here.

Books about food are always good

I've always been the type of person that enjoys a good book when eating. Somehow reading a book about food always makes the meal tastier even if what I'm reading isn't what I'm eating. "The Potluck Club" is another one of those great eating/reading books. It even comes complete with recipes from the dishes mentioned in the story in case you get a hankering for beef brisket, cinnamon rolls or broccoli casserole. I really enjoyed this book. It gave the story from many different angles, with the characters all have different personalities. The premise of the story deals with a group of women meeting together for prayer and potluck. The women are real, experiencing funny and heartbreaking events together. Each character has a background story that they try to keep secret from the others. I am very glad that the book did not fault Goldie for her decision in her situation with her husband. Other books would have let the matter slide by or have Goldie give in. My favorite scene in the book dealt with a certain bear and a chocolate cake. I had to put the book down because I was laughing so hard. (Of course if I had been in that situation I wouldn't be.)

My only complaint was the character of Clay. I'm not sure why his viewpoint is in the story. I understand he's a newspaper journalisty trying to get a story for the paper, but he just came across as annoying, nosy, and stalkerish. I also hope the conflict with Lisa Leann and Evangeline is either resovled or more fleshed out. This is a good book for women, perfect for a book club to read and discuss over a potluck! and yes! the library just got book 2 in.

Great finale of the Leisha Kelly series

Great finale of the Leisha Kelly series. I was saddened to learn of her passing about 4 years ago. May she rest in God's hands. Her books brought back the memories my Grandfather told me about living and farming during the Great Depression. She also helped in my walk back to faith, and enjoy all 7 of the Wortham/Hammond books over and over again.

Wonderful Ending to a series

I looked forward to this book and was disappointed at the same time. I desperately hated to see the Wortham's story come to an end. I love this family and have since I first read 'Julia's Hope' which was the beginning. It was so good to see Franky's character explored and put to words in this book. I always liked this kid when I first met him in the first book. He just seemed so downtrodden and overlooked by his own family and they seemed to have no idea what a terrific kid he was. Well, that has changed now. Franky is a wonderful person and a wonderful Christian. He is such an asset to the church he attends and I absolutely loved that he was asked to preach some for the church! Of course, I knew they would ask him. He is so humble in his walk with the Lord. Sarah is so incredibly blessed to have Franky as a husband because he will always take care of her and love her as Christ loved the church. Any woman would love to be loved by a man like Franky. He has taken all the hurts dished out to him as a child and built them into an incredible man with such empathy for others. He has such wonderful discernment, too, into other people.
I would dearly love to see another book in this series, just to see how everyone is doing. I hated so very much to see it end. If you haven't read any of these books, run to the bookstore and get them. You won't regret it.

An enjoyable read that leads you to important reflection

...In her book Mom Connection: Creating Vibrant Relationships in the Midst of Motherhood, Tracy Bianchi nails the tone of mom-to-mom literature. Her voice is warm and funny-with a bit of been-there-done-that wisdom that made me want to listen up and dog-ear more than a few pages. The book is a nicely balanced mix of information, anecdotes, and opportunities for reflection.

When I first read the title, I expected Mom Connections to be about making mommy friends, joining mommy groups, and maybe signing up for a zumba class with other ready-to-get-fit mommies. To be truthful, I expected the book to be pretty fluffy, and I imagined little more than the light banter of most mommy magazines. I was pleasantly surprised. Bianchi touches upon the many crucial connections in a woman's life, not only friendships. She gracefully moves from self, to family, to extended family, to marriage, to friendship, and finally, to the larger community. She points to the delicate complexities of in-law relationships and the essential communication in marriage. She does all of this with an eye toward identifying and creating "rhythms" in various areas of life...

I enjoyed Mom Connections. I would absolutely share it with other moms, especially new moms. I applaud Tracey Bianchi's candor and humor. I love her attention to the difficulties that come with all relationships. I think she is at her very best when she discusses the challenge of navigating the pressures as a husband and wife seeking to carve out a family culture of their own...

Peaceful, Joyful, Empowering

With Mom Connection, Tracey Bianchi has written a beautiful book that will encourage mothers in every aspect of life. Her honest stories make you breathe a sight of relief (Oh, good! I'm not the only one with sticky floors!); they help you think through the rhythms in your own life; and there are a few tears to shed along the way, too.

Mom Connection is encouraging, gentle, and challenging all at the same time. If you're feeling a little lost and alone, like you need a friend, but don't know where to start, Mom Connection will be a great first step.

Making Connections as a mom

Tracey Bianchi, author of Mom Connection, truly understands the lonely place motherhood can be. Early in the book she describes how she felt at the park surrounded by other moms but not knowing how to connect with them. This is something I could relate to, especially during my first few years as a mom. In her book she describes the importance of relationships, how to create them, how to balance them, and it is all packaged in a fun, witty, insightful and honest book. The short chapters make it hard to put down and easy to read during a mom's busy day. I recommend this book to any fellow moms out there.

Story starts out with a frazzled mother of toddlers who are down for a nap and she's just finishing the wrapping of the gifts and it's so much work!
The holidays are so commercialized now that the meaning is lost in the season.
The idea is to spend family time along with the holiday and everybody can participate. Family traditions over the years can be renewed.
A plan and how much you expect to spend are crucial. The advent tree is one of our favorite where you put an ornament on the tree each day til Christmas.
Scripture readings are also included along with instructions on how to make things, music for the season, etc.
Includes sheet music for the Christmas carols and many ideas and templates.
This book covers a lot more than I ever thought it would.

Wonderful family devotional resource

My family has really enjoyed using this as our Advent devotional book this season! The readings are well-written and easy to adapt for different ages. The book includes practical ideas for simplifing the holidays and focusing on what really matters. Making the advent tree or Jesse tree as suggested takes a little preparation, but you don't have to be crafty, and it has really been worth it for our young children (and us) to have the visual reminder of what we've read. A great resource!

Great 2-year Advent devotional for families

Very good Advent devotional to use with children. Each day includes a reflection and discussion to go along with a scripture verse. There is also a song and a corresponding symbol for the Advent banner (Year 1) or Jesse Tree (Year 2). You could use the devotionals with or without the banner or tree. My only issue is that I purchased the Kindle version last year and realized that I am unable to print out the symbols included. Luckily I found a blog, All Things with Purpose that has a printable that seems to follow the same symbols as this book. She based hers on Ann Hibbard's older book Family Celebrations.

Spiritual Whitespace and Soul Rest

I grew up in a home where we did things--cleaned our rooms, swept the floors, did the dishes, worked in the garden, did our homework, practiced music lessons. Sometimes, I felt that if I wasn't doing something all of the time, I was "lazy." Except at night--then we could watch TV or play board games. . . . Rest was what we did when the work was finished, and sometimes, it wasn't finished until we went to bed.

Yes, I am one of those people pleasers who measures her worth by how much she has accomplished, and I never measure up.

When I accepted the invitation to join Bonnie Gray's launch team for "Finding Spiritual Whitespace," I didn't know what to expect from her book and from her story. While I'm supposed to be giving Bonnie the gift of reading and reviewing her book, she has given me a greater gift--the gift to rest, the gift to be who God created me to be, and even more than than that, the gift to figure out who that person is.

Like Bonnie, I have PTSD as a result of losing my home in a house fire and from the resulting burns from that fire; I get panic attacks, too, when I'm in situations that are beyond my control, often triggered by the presence of fire and flame. I am slowly learning how to deal with these situations. Bonnie has given us permission to live with those conditions, to accept them as part of who we are now because of who we were then.

I found that even though Bonnie has given journaling prompts at the end of every chapter, I did not want to stop reading to do the writing. I was caught up in her story of childhood trauma and recovery. I wanted to hold the little girl Bonnie and tell her that she was so very loved all the way to the end of the book. As I read, I began looking at my own life to find some white space for soul rest as well. And by the time I reached the chapters on creativity and the menu for creating soul rest and whitespace moments, I knew what I needed to do. I began using my camera and my writing as whitespace moments, to disconnect from everything else and find those moments of peace.

Bonnie's book is not "feel good theology" or "armchair psychiatry." It is an invitation to come closer to Jesus, to let Him embrace you where you are. Even if you don't do all the journaling at the end of the chapters, I guarantee you will look at rest in Jesus very differently.

break from the scheduled "quiet time" to find real soul rest in the whitespace

I had a hard time getting into this book, "Finding Spiritual Whitespace" by Bonnie Gray. I liked the writing; she has a beautiful, laid-back style. I just couldn't relate. Gray has come from a hard childhood - parents divorced when she was young, her dad left and never tried to communicate with her or her sister, her mom was verbally abusive and seems like a really tough woman.

"Finding Spiritual Whitespace" is kind of set up like a study. There are questions at the end of each chapter and usually they pertain to your past. Examples: When have you felt cut up? What is your earliest memory of being happy? Sad? What kind of music did you enjoy listening to as a child?

Oh goodness, I just don't have that many memories. Honestly. Gray found that she had memories stored in her that were causing post-traumatic stress disorder and panic attacks. I just don't remember much. It's kind of a joke in my family. And especially vivid memories - those are lost on me.

What I really appreciated about this book was the Whitespace Challenge. Throughout the telling of her coming through PTSD and those challenges, Gray shared with us a sort of new way to spend time with God. Not a scheduled, sit down with a Bible, journal, and some nice calming music quiet time. But learning to invite God into the "whitespace" of your day.

I love this idea. I stress a lot about doing things "right" - prayer, meditation, memorization, Bible study. A lot of things that are good things but things I don't believe God wants us to stress over! But there are a million voices telling me the "right" way to do things. And I'm so Type A people pleaser that I hate to disappoint or do it "wrong." So I love that Gray has opened my eyes to the realization (in my heart because I've known this in my head for a long time) that there is no one right way to spend time with God.

Sometimes it may be with a journal and Bible in a nice cozy chair. Sometimes it may be in the bathtub just talking to Him. It can be outside, inside. Daytime, nighttime, midmorning! I believe it can be while I'm washing dishes or folding laundry or watching tv (sometimes, not all the time). God does not belong in a box. He can speak to us whenever, wherever, however He desires.

I am taking time this week to really listen to God to hear Him speak to me a word. Just one. One word giving me direction, encouragement, discernment, peace, something from Him. I may hear this word as I go and watch the Waltons or while I'm playing with my kids or while I'm cooking supper or while I'm on the phone with my husband. I still plan to spend time in His Word but to not put my time with him in a box of "I must spend X minutes or else I'm a super failure."

I'm tired of being a Christian failure and I'm sure I'm not alone in this. I plan to give myself as much grace as He has given me because I am not my own.

A Must Read for Any Woman in Need of Healing and Rest

There are times when you sit down to read a book and it completely grips you. Bonnie's book did that for me. Her story of childhood trauma stirs the emotions. Her battle with panic attacks demonstrates her bravery. Bonnie doesn't leave the story there. She goes on to talk of her journey to find rest or "spiritual whitespace". How can we make time to rest? To take care of ourselves? To spend time with God so that He can renew us? Through spiritual whitespace. By leaving some of our time blank for God to fill.

Not only is her story gripping, her book is practical. She lays out how to rest. The book contains journaling prompts and suggestions for activities to find whitespace in your life. There is quite a creative collection of ideas. I found the prompts to be healing when I sat down to write. I haven't done all of them, but the one that I did do were eye-opening. The suggested activities range from enjoying the outdoors to creating a memory journal to spending time with an old friend.

I read a ton of books each year. You could say I devour them, but Bonnie's book now holds a special place on my shelf. It helped me to go through some healing and learn how to take time to rest. I would have to say that so far this year it has been the top read for me. If you are struggling with healing or finding peace or experiencing stress, Bonnie's book is not to be missed!!
