To say I enjoyed this book would be an understatement

To say I enjoyed this book would be an understatement. As someone who lives with a significant hearing impairment, I could attest for the feelings of discouragement that accompany a hearing impairment. Moreover, I was inspired by her resilience in overcoming adversity time and time again. A really inspirational read!

It was a great treat to read the life story about a young lady who followed her dream and became a great basketball player for so many people but also for herself. She worked through her handicap, and became a better person because of it. This is a great book that I would highly recommend.

I was truly surprised how the lsyout of the book was. The stories she share really answered a lot questions I had about her leadership at Tennessee. Especially when she would not assert herself in games that Tennessee was trailing. Overall I enjoyed the book tremendously!!

About the Author
Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has challenged athletes and coaches to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is cultivating Christian principles in communities throughout the world by encouraging, equipping, and empowering others to serve as examples and to make a difference. Reaching over two million people annually on the professional, college, high school, junior high, and youth levels, FCA has grown into one of the largest sports ministries. Through this shared passion for athletics and faith, lives are changed for current and future generations.

John Wooden was a high school and college coach for forty years. During that time, his teams won more than 80 percent of their games. From 1948 to 1975, his UCLA Bruins teams claimed 10 NCAA national championships, including seven in a row, and at one time won 88 consecutive games. Wooden is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, both as a player and a coach. He originated the Pyramid of Success and was the coauthor with Jay Carty of the bestseller Coach Wooden One-on-One. Wooden and his wife, Nellie, were married 53 years when she passed away in 1985. Wooden lived to be 99 years of age, passing away on June 4, 2010.

Excellent words of wisdom

Whether you're a coach or not, whether you're a christian or not, this book has tremendous insights about everyday living. Coach Wooden was an influence on so many and went well beyond coaching. This was very, very refreshing especially in the times we live in. . . . Highly Recommended

The Greatest Coach Ever by Tony Dungy, David Robinson, Tom Osborne, and others was an extraordinary book. It is about John Wooden and his very unique coaching style which put him among the greatest coaches in history. The author shows the reader how great of a coach John Wooden was and how he was such a successful as a coach. This book would appeal to any one that is interested in sports and thinks that the history of sports is interesting. As you read my book I would actually try to learn something from this great coach.
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

What a Woman Would Want a Man to Feel and Think

Earlier this summer we had one Saturday that was a bit of a summer "snow day" for my family. The weather outside was unbearably hot so we all stayed inside. I picked up Blue Skies Tomorrow and settled down into one of our lazyboys for a long read.

After reading The Sweetest Thing by Elizabeth Musser recently and greatly enjoying it, I thought I would give another historical Christian fiction book a whirl. The Sweetest Thing had elements of romance in the story, but it is not what I would call a "Christian Romance". Blue Skies Tomorrow by Sarah Sundin is a Christian romance. It is the third book in her Wings of Glory series, but it can easily be read as a stand alone novel.

Storyline: Helen's husband, Jim, died two years earlier in WWII. She lives in a home owned by her father in law and receives a monthly stipend from him that comes from her husband's life insurance (that he named his parents custodians of). Early on in the story, you get clues that Helen acts the part of the grieving widow but does not have the feelings of one. You learn why as the story goes along. The reasons why are at the core of this story. Ray Novak is an old childhood friend of Helen. He returns from flight instructor school. His desire is to be a pastor, but knows he must serve in the armed forces during the war. His two brothers are also serving. The story primarily focuses on their romance and the journey of their coming together, apart, and then...

Writing: This story is written fine. I was discussing with my husband this weekend how the choice of words tells you a lot about the focus of the author in the story. Here's are two examples of Ms. Sundin's writing:
"Ray reached into a blue glass bowl and popped a strawberry into his mouth. His tongue savored the contrast between smooth skin and rough seeds until he couldn't stand the temptation any longer." p. 27
"His own strawberry-scented breath wrapped around her, and she drew closer to cover her memories of gregarious charm with Ray's quiet strength." p. 61
Both examples typify romantic fiction to me.

Plot: The plot becomes clear after the first third of the book. The ending is satisfying.

Social Issues: This book centers on the issue of domestic abuse. I have wondered how generations past dealt with this issue. My understanding is that it was largely kept behind closed doors or swept under the rug. I wish I knew someone who lived during this time that I could ask about it. I would like to know if the portrayal of how the families in this story cope with it is realistic.

Conclusion: Did I enjoy this story? Yes...and no. I didn't enjoy it as much as many I've read. It felt very formulaic. I have a hard time believing that a man would feel about Helen the way Ray Novak's feelings are described in the book. I think his feelings are described as a woman would long for them to be. Perhaps that is my cynicism. All in all, the story and writing are fine, but this book kind of blends into the pack for me.

Cumbersome in Some Ways Intriguing in Others

Blue Skies Tomorrow was both interesting and annoying.

The interesting parts revolved around the secondary plot lines where the book followed Raymond Novak overseas and Helen to her job.

It was fascinating to read about the bigotry that minorities faced despite their contributions to the war, and I don't mean the bigotry that led to black men working in the kitchen - the bigotry in this book is much, much deeper. Down to the point where black men were actually prosecuted for what were basically non-issues.

Also interesting was the lack of interest in protecting a family of women who were abused by the father and son of the family. What was really irritating was watching a young person who knew certain situations were wrong accept the situations b/c she was prideful. Fear is one thing...it leads to irrationality, but pride should come before a fall, and despite Helen eventually rising above, she never really acknowledges what her problem was.

As you can see the interest and cumbersome aspects of the book were thoroughly intertwined. I read the entire volume, however, so I must have liked it more than I disliked it.

Heavy story. Liked the ending!

The best part is the ending. I didn't enjoy the third book in the Wings of Glory series as much as I did the first two. Maybe it's because I don't enjoy reading such heavy material during my times of leisure. I felt the social ills that consumed the story created a sense of tension and unease most of the time I was reading.

The story begins with widowed Helen Carlisle dealing ineffectively with her young son`s temper tantrums. But it doesn't end there. Other than Lt. Novak, most of the people in Helen's life are a disappointment to her and some are actually harmful. Eventually, she learns to stand up for herself, but it takes a long time.

I also felt some of the situations were too unbelievable; especially, the section after Lt. Raymond Novak`s return from his final mission.

Blue Skies Tomorrow is a heavy story. I felt like I needed a respite from my reading--times of normalcy where nothing dramatic and harmful was happening.

I know I'm in the minority in my rating for Blue Skies Tomorrow, but I have to be honest in how the story affected me. I encourage you to read it and form your own opinion.

If you have teenage or younger daughters, I encourage you to read Blue Skies Tomorrow before giving it to them to read. This will give you the opportunity to discuss some of the issues and bad behaviors of the characters before she reads it. I made the mistake of telling my daughter she could read it before I did; based on my enjoyment of the first two books in the series. This one dealt with issues she has never been exposed to. That's not necessarily bad, but I would have preferred knowing ahead of time so I could make a more informed decision.

Great Book!

Finding the peace you long for is one reason I wanted to read this book. I was very happy I did. We face circumstances over which we have little control. We cannot control other people's choices, even through their choices do affect us. We cannot control certain things like disease and disaster, though both are a part of our world.

What we do have control over are the three things Paul had control over: attitude, direction, and trust. In other words, what we have control over is what we set our minds on.

This book of remembrance, a tool to help you remember the presence of Christ in the middle of the difficult places in your life. I have the hardest time in the middle of a problem, probably because I want to control the outcome and realize I can't. Through this book will not change your problem, it can help you look up and change your perspective. It is my prayer that each page will give you a little hope for the journey.

I also liked this prayer:
Prayer
Lord, it is so easy to focus on my problem rather than on your power. Give me the grace to live above my problems with the view of your faithfulness covering me in each of life's situations. In the practical, guide me. In the spiritual, train me. In the places in between, steady me for the duration of the problem at hand. I surrender all that overwhelms me today into your hands. Amen.

Great Book

This book is great! My daughter and I use this book as our mother/daughter devotional time, and often times the stories are even relatable to things going on in my life. It is a wonderful book to initiate thought provoking conversations with our children -and ourselves if necessary. -Each lesson even comes w/ a closing prayer.

Amazing Biblical Fiction -- Accurate!

Yay! Jill Eileen Smith did not disappoint with this, her newest book! Rebekah, the heroine, is a character who is easy to relate to. I know I'll always remember the insights that I gained about her from this. In the Bible, I've always found her a bit hard to understand - how could she and Isaac choose favorites? How could she deceive him like that? This book did a great job with explaining that. I'm not saying that God "spoke" to Jill and told her how it was...but Jill did a great job putting me, the reader, in Rebekah's mind, so that I understand WHY she might do what she did. For example. Have you ever thought about how Isaac felt after his father Abraham almost sacrificed him? Or what Sarah thought about Abraham doing that? I hadn't...but after this book, wow, I am thinking about that. Once again, this book is Biblically accurate, like all of Jill's have been thus far. Jill mentions in the introduction, if I remember right, that after writing this, she saw Rebekah in a whole new light. I understand that totally...I do too. I can't recommend this book highly enough...and I can't wait for "Rachel."

Enjoyable Biblical Fiction!

I really enjoy Biblical fiction books. They give you the basic gist of the Bible story, but also bring the story to life - so while it might be hard to understand or see the timeline in the original Biblical text - you get a feeling for the who the person/people of the story were in real life. Knowing that there have been some liberties taken to flesh out the characters, it is the big events in the characters lives that you remember.

In Rebekah's case, this would be her marriage to Isaac - the journey, both physically and spiritually to get to that point in her life. The birth of Jacob and Esau and the betrayal with the blessing when they were older. You are given some background into Isaac's childhood, and his relationship with Abraham and Sarai. Something I had never really thought about before was how I would feel if one of my parents would be willing to sacrifice me if they thought they were following God's will. Imagine what that does to a young child's relationship with their father - and how it affected the relationship between Abraham and Sarai.

While a lot of this is conjecture on the author's part, it makes these Biblical stories not just stories any more, but makes you realize that these were real people. They had the same struggles we do today with following God's will, betrayal and forgiveness. I have really enjoyed this series so far and am looking forward to the third book, Rachel.

Much better than Sarai!! :-)

Jill Eileen Smith returns with the Biblical tale of Isaac and Rebekah. :-)

I was first entranced by Miss Smith's writing with the first book in this series, Sarai. If I liked Sarai then I loved Rebekah. I read pretty much the whole book in one day. For me, Rebekah totally surpassed Sarai. Sticking close to what is in the Biblical account; Miss Smith leads us through Isaac and Rebekah's early marriage all the way to the infamous impersonation of Esau by Jacob.

Rebekah came right off the page! I connected with her in a way I didn't expect to and thus had a really hard time setting the book down. The writing flowed, the characters felt real, and the ending already makes me excited for Rachel!

I never felt like I understood Isaac until I read this. He went through a tragic yet amazing event as a child and I never thought about how almost being sacrificed would affect him. He was a great husband and father... Well, at least to Esau.

In sum, if you like Biblical fiction you'll love this one! I also highly suggest you read the chapters in Genesis either before or after reading Rebekah. You'll be amazed and how well Miss Smith stuck to the Biblical account. ;-)

Great resource

Churches, small group leaders, Family Ministers - this one is worth the $99.00 price tag. I must say hats off to Gospel Light for producing a cost effective, all-inclusive kit! This one has the Leaders Guide, Hardcover book, DVD and not one but SIX study guides! This is a deal that absolutely can not be beat anywhere. Most kits do not include the six study guides or a hardcover book and cost over $100.00.

Look past the title - do not let pride mislead you - this is a must read - we ALL of buttons that can be pushed! This book is highly convicting to those seeking Christ's direction and sharpening in their lives. It exposes the very sin nature of acting on unrighteous anger - and all of us do it - is is our fleshly first instinct and must be brought under control of the Holy Spirit. I have quickly become a fan of these two authors and now own many of their most recent works thanks to being able to review them for the publisher. This one is no less impressive than the first - I have already handed it out to others I know.

In addition to this incredibly insightful book this kit comes with the equally great study guides. These challenge couples to take a close look at their individual issues with anger. I know some people think they don't have any anger issues - after all you don't blow up and throw a screaming tantrum or throw stuff across the room - that's an anger problem isn't it? But what about pouting, or running away from the issue. We all have buttons that get pushed, secret insecurities, hidden hurts. She bases her advice on her own experiences, scripture, and spiritual heavyweights such as Richard Foster in a format that is younger-woman friendly.

Not a teenager or even a twenty- or thirty-something, but having had some recent conflicts with mean girls, I am intrigued by DiMarco's approach to the problem. However, I found there was much I disagreed with, and I would hesitate to give it to my daughter without one-on-one discussion and caveats about her advice. Read on.

The main goal, DiMarco believes, is to get the mean girl to leave us alone. To do this, she first helps us understand the mean girl's motivations. Does she perceive us as a rival? Does she believe we are somehow better than her? Does she gossip about us? If so, why?

Our response, she believes, is to keep our mouth shut and try not to justify ourselves to those mean girls we don't have a relationship with (pulling from the wisdom of Richard Foster's CELEBRATION OF DISCIPLINE). Feeling a need to adjust our image, she believes, is proof that we are serving humans rather than God. Rather confusingly, she admits there might be a time to make the truth known (if a lie is being spread about us at the office that we are stealing, for example) but not to the perpetrator. Instead, tell the supervisor. "The spiritual truth is that God never calls us to stand up for ourselves to the Mean Girl. Psychologists teach us that standing up for ourselves is healthy, but in my study of God's Word, I can't find any biblical support for this notion," she writes. This is a very discussable point that many readers may take issue with.

If we consider the mean girl our friend, the advice seems more realistic. Talk to her about the problem (her complaining, the gossip she spreads, her need for control). There may also be a time to bail out of the relationship, if the mean girl is unwilling to change.

Confusingly, although DiMarco eschews self-examination that isn't upwardly focused ("So much freedom comes in removing our eyes from self and placing them securely on the Father that any attempt at self-justification or analysis would be wasteful if not faithless."), she prods women toward it through quizzes, questions ("What would you have done in that situation? "You have to be honest and really assess how you live, what you do, and how you do it.") What I came away with was the idea that as long as my self-examination is God-centered, I'm on the right track. Fair enough. It seems as if she advocates "dying to self," which is admirable, and avoiding too much navel-gazing, also admirable.

However, it's not terribly clear how to balance the two, and the flow of information isn't always conducive to figuring it out. I ended the book feeling confused. There's a tendency, especially in the first half of the book, toward a "woman as doormat" tone that, in my understanding of scripture and myself as made in the image of God, doesn't work. Humbleness is good. Being a doormat is not. How do I know the difference? The second half seems stronger, as DiMarco urges girlfriends to talk things over and confront problems in love.

Despite some arguable points, there is some advice worth taking, including the reminder that changing mean women isn't our job; loving them and forgiving them is. Much of the power of a mean woman --- or a mean man, for that matter --- can be defused with those two simple actions. Also applaudable: Mean-free women are happy when their friends do well, they leave others feeling good about themselves, and they aren't afraid to confront their friends in love, they learn to let go of past hurts. Good advice.

The page layouts are twenty-something friendly, if sometimes a bit all over the place for this 44-year-old reviewer. Lots of pull-out quotes, short quizzes, and boxed tips ("Surviving the Mean Compliment Giver") will make this appealing to women whose acquaintance with reading revolves mainly around their laptop or the latest girl-friendly magazine.

There is solid value in DiMarco's call not to focus on our image, but to focus on God and how he helps us grow through difficult people. Yet, women might be better served to use this book in small groups with an eye to discussion and discernment rather than embracing the advice --- which is of mixed value --- as gospel truth.

Some Interesting Material but...

This book really does apply mostly to Christians as its proofs are Christian specific. Should one be of another religion then they will be fairly discombobulated by the author's reliance on scripture as a means for justifying her positions. I don't know Mrs. Dimarco personally, but I am rather certain that she is a member of one of Christianity's more evangelizing wings as there is much here that would even confuse Catholics. In fairness, the title of the book should probably have been Mean Girls All Grown Up: A Guide for Christians as there is not hint of its biblical emphasis on the cover.

While I can see why several readers were disappointed, I do think the author has some excellent analysis here. I also think that "forgiving your enemies" is the best thing for one's own mental health. I don't say this out of a desire to religiously parrot, however. I truly think that when one holds grudges they drink a glass of poison every day while expecting the other person to die. Furthermore, I admit to my own hypocrisy here as I have been unable to forgive properly on a handful of occasions. Yet, the way she advocates is undoubtedly best for the person cursed with the ire of mean women.

Selfless approach to facing mean.

In Mean Girls All Grown Up, Hayley DiMarco gives counterculture advice to women facing mean and helps diagnose the ways we can be seen as mean by others.

Writing from a Christian perspective, DiMarco writes of how the culture of self-esteem and our `rights' has created a cycle of mean; `she was mean to mean first, so I was justified in getting her back.'

Reminding us that "we can't change others, we can only change ourselves," DiMarco focuses the reader inward which in this reviewer's case helped point out that my drive to achieve was painting a bulls-eye on my back for women less driven. Taking time to engage these women instead of ignoring them as "non job essential" was her recommendation.

For any reader uncomfortable with Christianity, I'd point you elsewhere. But if the non-religious reader acknowledges that the Bible is a book of wisdom and common sense lacking in today's selfish culture, you'll appreciate much of this book's content.

This book is formatted for the `instant messaging' generation, with lots of quotes, quizzes, and features like "Top Ten Signs Your Friend Is a Mean Girl." If you prefer black serif fonts on white paper, you might be a tad overwhelmed by this book. My personal opinion is that the design was quite engaging.

The article approach makes the book easily digestible and allows the reader to jump around reading chapters that apply to their current situation of mean. Also, because of the chapters having a magazine article feel rather than the traditional Chapter 1, Chapter 2 layout, linear thinkers might find the book contradictory or disjointed.

I suspect that this may have been the case with a previous reviewer. DiMarco gives examples of people in the Bible that were basically doormats when it came to their personal interests and "being offended," the most notable being Paul and Jesus. The second half of the book does contain advice on how to communicate with others in situations of mean but no longer with a self-centered focus or feeling "offended."

If you're wanting a book that gives you permission to think highly of yourself and put your interests and feelings above others, there are plenty other books out there on the subject. If you buy into the concept that life is not all about you, that you are "the greatest of sinners" and want to live a more selfless life focused on higher things, this is a worthy read.
