Abraham begat Isaac begat Jacob and then came wives

Powerful storyline includes description so realistic you mentally feel ancient sand and rock under your feet. A heart rendering tale of polygamy. Rachel and Jacob love at first sight. 7 years work, the bride-price, takes a conniving turn to added years. A plot full of unintended paths, upheaval, even with best laid plans. True love waits. Not fair! Life often is not.
Life in a house of polygamy has relationships and interaction vastly contrasting today's accepted practice of one mate at a time. It is even different than today's extramarital affairs. The Old Testament family triangle of Jacob, Rachel, and Leah is a unique entanglement and Jill Eileen Smith has rendered it stunningly visual as she writes to bring an historic setting to contemporary illumination. Well done!
Genesis Fiction for men or girls, any age. It could just as correctly been titled "JACOB", or "A Marriage Tent too Small."
A theme runs through lead characters in this book. It could be simplified in one word: "faith." Better would be "keep-on-keeping-on" and observe what plans Abba Adonai has for you.
Favorite quote: "Perhaps we would not recognize the blessings we have if not for the pain along the way."
A truth, Jill Eileen Smith offers almost scripturally.

Deceptions! Right Or Wrong?

This book will stay with me for a long time. While I already knew the story of Jacob, Rachel, and Leah the author made this story come alive for me. I witnessed the competition between two sisters, at times coming close to hating each other, while fighting for Jacob’s favor.
I found the author Jill Eileen Smith to be an amazing story teller. I was caught up in so many of the scenes in this book. I was torn with emotion while Leah yearned for Jacob to visit her tent as often as he did Rachel’s. I felt pity for her even though Leah was aware that Rachel was Jacob’s first and only love.
I was angered at Laban for treating Jacob the way he did. Just who does he think he is? Then I remembered, Jacob was not an innocent bystander in this story. But still…..
So many deceptions in this Biblical story. When we set out to deceive others we must pay for the choices we make.
The author most certainly did her research for this book. I compared the happenings in this story to the Bible and it is an accurate account of the Biblical story. This is why I will read more books by this author. I have already ordered a few more of her novels. I can’t wait to once again be engrossed in another great read!
I urge those who are reading this review of Rachel to purchase a copy of it. I highly recommend this 5 star book to you!

Book worth reading

I have the first two books in this series, Sarai and Rebekah, written by Jill Eileen Smith. I bought both of them, and was so excited when I saw the last one Rachel was up for review. I was so glad to be able to have the whole series. This book was so good. It follows the story of Jacob and his two wives Rachel and Leah. When I read this story in the Bible, I often find myself just brushing over the emotions of the story. I always think of Jacob's disappointment, but often times forget the emotional hardship of Rachel and Leah. Leah was the older one, and when her younger sister got engaged, it was hard on her. I, being the oldest, could somewhat relate to those feelings. She worried she would never get married if her younger sister got married before her. So, her mother told her to go in place of Rachel. For Rachel, I'm sure it was a very traumatic experience to have your sister marry the man you love. The deception set the stage for the rest of their lives. Rachel could not have children until she was older, and Leah had many children, which she thought would earn Jacob's love. There is so much conflict in this story, and it was so good for me to read it. It makes the Bible story come to life, and you can relate to how they are feeling. We don't know exactly how the characters felt in the Bible, but I think it's safe to assume what human feelings arise in different situations. Over all I would give this book at 5 out of 5, and I would highly recommend it to those who like reading Bible stories.
