The story was fantastic!

On Distant Shores is only the second book I've read by Sarah Sundin (the first being With Every Letter), so I was surprised (and a little confused - at first) that this story didn't pick up where book one ended. Instead, it went back in time a little bit and showed the last part of With Every Letter from Georgie's perspective and then continued on from there. I actually really liked this - it was cool to get Georgie's take on certain things. :)

I really loved the characters in On Distant Shores. I loved how Georgie and John had struggles and issues they had to work on. They felt very real and I couldn't help but care about them.

The story was fantastic! There were ups and downs and a lot of surprises - I definitely didn't see certain things coming! I loved the military aspect and all the history in On Distant Shores.

Overall, On Distant Shores was a great read. I enjoyed it even more than With Every Letter (which I really liked). I definitely recommend this book and can't wait to read Kay's story, In Perfect Time, when it releases.

Another fantastic WWII story from Sarah Sundin!

Another fantastic WWII story from Sarah Sundin!

Georgie was a highlight in With Every Letter and I couldn't wait to learn more about her. I love her kind heart. Without it, she and Rose would have missed out on a great friendship with Mellie, who we met in the first book. Though she'd let other people make decisions for her all her life, Georgie found herself ready for a change.

There was a little overlap between the first and this one, but a very minor one at that, and it didn't affect Georgie's story at all. As always, Sundin's writing is excellent and smooth. The journeys she put these characters on were not easy. However, on the flip side, our journey isn't either. Watching Georgie and Hutch grow through the course of the story felt like the most natural thing. Nothing happened too fast or too slow.

It was effortless to get lost in the era and world Georgie and Hutch found themselves in. I love the WWII era. The relationships, the faith, the common hope for a better future. One of my favorite scenes is set on Christmas day with Georgie on a flight. She led the men in carols and Christmas cheer, despite the war going on around them. You don't see or hear things like that any more. The scene is a highlight for me. Speaking of highlights I'll note real quick that Lucia is a big one. I hope we see her again! She was absolutely adorable!

Previous fans of Sundin's work will not be disappointed by her latest release. I loved following Georgie and Hutch through their struggles and I loved diving into their worlds for a time. I look forward to getting to know Kay better in the next book. Perhaps I'll finally have my questions answered.

Courage and Trust in World War II

On Distant Shores picks up the history of the 802nd WW2 flight nurses with the life of Lt. George Taylor. As World War II continues, George learns two things about herself - the first, as the youngest, pampered daughter of a Southern family, she's never had to make decisions for herself. Even the decision to join the flight nurses was just following her lifetime best friend, tomboy Kay, into the program. The other thing George learns is that she's terrified, and when an emergency comes, she freezes. So the voices of family and fiancé saying "come home where you belong" are very loud. Along the way, she makes friends with John Hutchinson "Hutch", a pharmacist, who is also finding the way hard due to the lack of professional respect for his trade in the army. Though they both have a loved one waiting at home, these two believe it will be okay to be friends and encourage each other to grow. Ultimately, they are both learning the lesson that God's is the voice they should listen to, and His plans, not their own, are best.

In this second story of the series, the landscape changes from Northern Africa to Italy, taking the non-combatants closer to the war front and danger. Readers experience vicariously the enemy bombings of Red Cross tents, the irony of enjoying a party on the beach and visiting historic sites sandwiched between frantic efforts to save lives. Throughout the book, the deepening faith and spiritual growth of Georgie and Hutch remains an important focus. War II aficionados and those who just like a good story will enjoy this apparently accurate portrayal of day to day life for the medical personnel in Italy's war zones.

Sarah Sundin is an extremely good storyteller who has obviously researched well. On Distant Shores is a gripping novel that held my attention too long past my bedtime! I couldn't put the book down with only a few chapters to go. Although I'd definitely recommend that you read With Every Letter, this book would still be good as a stand-alone story.

The Promise

The Promise by Dan Walsh and Gary Smalley is the second book in their Restoration Series. It wasn't quite as moving to me as their first, The Dance, but then I haven't faced the problems addressed in this book. It was fast-paced and easy to read, it kept my attention so much that I finished it in one day (just several hours of reading time in between laundry and other chores). I'm glad these men have decided to tackle some of the greatest problems in marriages and a novel is a good way to do it. Again though, as I thought with the first one, these are geared towards women when it's the men who ought to read them. The men (in both novels) are the ones who need to do most of the changing, yet I doubt a man will read this series without prodding from their wives.

Counseling book in fiction form

A counseling book in fiction form. I have not read the first book in this series so it was like stepping into the middle of a dysfunctional mess that you wish you knew a little more back history on to make it more enjoyable.

I find it interesting that Smalley would tackle the fictional world when he is very successful at the non fiction side of things. And though I am normally a HUGE fan of Dan Walsh I will say this one is not one of my favorites that he has written.

However, I will also say this - the story is written so real to life that it is at times hard to believe that this is fiction at all and not a reality story. The characters are vivid, transparent and extremely real to life. The subject I am sure will hit home to many readers and may in fact be the very reason that Smalley and Walsh combined their talents to write a series such as this. When so many people are held by pride, shame, indifference, or the desire to hide from their reality or deny it altogether they may be more apt to pick up a fictional book rather than the numerous counseling books of Smalley.

I think this book will no doubt be a success and will quickly climb the charts as a number one. However, it is just not what I would normally choose as reading material.

Revealed Secrets

Jim and Marilyn Anderson have reclaimed their marriage through prayer, hard work, love, and a new respect for one another. As their marriage and faith are healing and their relationship growing, the family is once again placed in a crisis situation. Dan Walsh and Gary Smalley as a team, have delivered another successful story of family dissolution and how claiming God's promises can lead toward the discovery of true healing. Reality lives within the pages of this book regarding struggles of the human spirit. Through openness, communication and prayer, reconciliation is possible, and hope is the claim for the future. I have discovered after reading both The Dance and The Promise that thoughts of these family adversities and the healing that takes place have lingered in my mind. I think that reveals a very effective portrayal of life and the possibilities that are within our reach through faith, trust and hope.

Fantastic except text size.

I have always loved the GW translation. The cover is a beautiful blue. The engraved Hebrew letters, awesome. The handy size, perfect for carrying. I love the way the names of God are brown while the text is black. My one complaint is the text size. I had to get some reading glasses to read it.

Not completely embracing Hebrew Roots

I purchased this Bible with the hope of seeing all of the Hebrew names of God in it. I am so tired of seeing the horrific translations of Yahweh's Names. My big problem with this Bible is that it keeps saying Yeshua "Christ" rather than Yeshua the Messiah!!! Not good. Something is very wrong with this and it occurs everywhere in the Renewed Covenant of this Bible. Other than that, it is an enjoyable read but "a little leaven leavens the whole loaf".

True Help Indeed

I thought I was getting a "how to" clean and organize your home.
I WAS DEAD WRONG!

I ordered this book, on CD, because my house and life were spinning out of control - and I didn't have time to read a book! I live surrounded by clutter in a home where finding the floor is like striking gold! I was working non-stop cleaning and trying to keep up - and achieving NOTHING!

Sandra Felton is a "former messy", and from that vantage point she explores why "messies", that's me, are messy. How they think, how hard they work while accomplishing nothing, and what habits/thought patterns keep them in this constant state of disarray. I could identify with nearly every point in the book.

This has been my inspiration to decluttering and cleaning my house room by room, which I have done many times in the past, but now I have the knowledge of how to keep it that way! I have also joined her online support group, "messies anonymous", and have ordered many of her "how to" books to help me in this process.

I will recover from my "messy" lifestyle, and I will live in a peaceful, harmonious home, thanks to this wonderful author's past struggles, current success, and her willingness to share with anyone in need.

Hope for Those of Us Who are Chronically Disorganized

I am a Sandra Felton fan. I have been for years. What sets her books apart from the other organizing books is the education you receive.

Sandra is a teacher, a researcher, a writer and a messie. She doesn't give you the proverbial fish so you can eat for the day, she instructs you and gives you insight into the heart and mind of a person who is struggling with clutter and disorganization. Her work is based on research from many areas of life so you can grow, change and live a full and healthy life!

This title has 2 parts. The first part deals with why we are messy. We can look at possible social, emotional, spiritual and physical reasons for the clutter and disorganization. After each chapter Sandra has questions to help us further evaluate our lives and what might need to be changed.

The 2nd part deals with ways we can over-come the problems we identified in the first half of the book. There are more questions to get us thinking and keep us motivated to change.

This book is really more than a book, it is a workbook too. Sandra's goal is not to just sell a book but to help people grow and change, to be the best they can be,in my mind the book should be listed under self improvement! ;-)

Another great feature of this book is that throughout the book and in the back she lists resources and support groups for getting further help or better understanding a problem.

As with most of Sandra's books, this is not a how to book or a follow me exactly and do exactly as I say and you will have a neat home book;there are no tips and tricks on how to store ketchup or toilet paper neatly.

These books are written to help you become you, to order you life your own way. And afterall who wants to do something just like everyone else? Especially if you are a creative messie like ME!

Inspiring

Sandra Felton spends the first part of her book defining the three types of messies and listing specific obstacles that hinder each type. They are the saver, the clutterer, and the time-waster. These three chapters helped me to identify why I can't ever get my home completely under control. This book does not give the hows as much as it gives the whys regarding the housekeeper's personality and preferences. Several chapters are devoted to detailing more serious causes of disorder such as depression, an alcoholic family background, adult ADD. Being on the lower end of the messie scale, many of these issues did not apply to me, and it sometimes felt as if she were insinuating that there is a serious reason behind why all messies have a disorganized home.

I have always known my problem-I'm lazy! Actually, she helped me define some of the causes of "laziness" or actually a lack of motivation, while giving steps to overcome them. While reading, I was inspired to go ahead and tackle some of the clutter in my home. I find that reading a book such as this one (or Don Aslett's Clutter's Last Stand: It's Time To De-junk Your Life!) helps to give me that additional motivation that I need to tackle a room or a closet that is in great need of being purged.

Bob Richards is a champion all-around athlete, a former holder of the Olympic pole vault record, the Olympic gold medalist in men's pole vault for 1952 and 1956, and the former director of the Wheaties Sports Federation. In 1958 he was also the first athlete to appear on the front of a Wheaties cereal box.

He is also the first athlete to appear on the front of a Wheaties cereal box in 1958. The best motivational/ Inspirational book ever!!

I bought this book for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and he loved it. He couldn't put it down, He read it in one day!!! He's read it about 5 times and has notes in it with sticky pads. We bought 3 copies for each one of his nephews, for motivation and overall to keep them in a goal oriented mode. We have a very athletic family with wresting, baseball and football even some catttle ranching and bull riding. This book keeps us focused on giving your best and to always give 110% of yourself in not only sports but in life also.
I would definatly suggest this book for a great read!!! For ages 8 and up!

I've read this book 3 times, and reference it often. I learned of this book from Dan Gable who said it is a must read for any serious athlete. I wish that there would be another edition with updated stories and sports figures, but the message the book conveys is excellent.

My father purchased this book for me when I was struggling with knee problems as a rising tennis player. In the cover he wrote, "Play like a champion, and win! Live like a champion, and live eternally!" This book is one of the best gifts I have ever received. It has helped guide and give me inspiration throughout some of the most challenging times in my life. I seriously encourage all to buy this book.

One of the best Christmas romance novels this year!!!

I've been a huge lover of roses and not quite sure where it came from. In fact, my husband understands that I would rather have a rose plant over a dozen of roses any day. Why? Because they will continue to produce blooms long after that dozen cut roses dies. And it is a constant reminder of the time they were purchased as my love gardens continues to grow.

I've been a huge fan of Suzanne Woods Fisher and her ability to capture the love of the reader for all things Amish. So whenever I see her books available for review and add in the element of a Christmas novel, and toss in the love of gardening roses for good measure, well I absolutely knew I had to have this one. And I was NOT disappointed in the slightest. This has all the elements of what I am looking for in a great Amish love story. A plot twist, a love that is just waiting to be discovered despite all the odds against them, and a love of something that will draw the characters together. That is just what you find tucked beneath the beautiful cover of Christmas at Rose Hill Farm.

Bill Lapp has left his former Amish life behind as he works as a rose rustler at Penn State. Meaning it is his job to help discover roses that can't be identified and to also help cultivate lasting ones to be shared by rose lovers all over the world. You could say he is the rose expert. He simply walked away from a potential relationship with Bess Riehl when it seemed she had fallen into the same opinion of him as his father and brothers. It was simply better to try and find a new start someplace far from his feelings and his heart.

Bess Riehl is hoping that her upcoming wedding to Amos Lapp will enable her to move forward with a man who truly loves her and will do anything to make sure she is well taken care of. Only thing is, she can't forget the man who claimed her heart at 12 and wonders if she will ever find a way to put Billy in her past. Working alongside her father at Rose Hill Farm, Bess discovers a rose plant beneath the potting table while cleaning things out before the wedding and believes it might be the one special rose her grandmother had told her about so long ago and thought was destroyed. But there is only one way to know for sure and her father contacts their local rose expert but he can't make it and suggest that Billy be the one to do it. The only thing is that neither of them know that Billy is the rose rustler until Bess arrives to pick him up. Will he be able to stick to his job or will something more happen to draw them closer together? What is the significance of this mystery rose at Christmas? Only time will tell.

I found that while I was reading this novel, I would stop and look up the different variety of roses that Billy and Bess were talking about and didn't realize that some of the oldest rose varieties were brought over from Europe, often found in the old cemeteries to this day. In fact I didn't know that you could propagate new rose cuttings using willow water, something I also discovered while referencing the term I came across while reading the novel. I can't wait to try it on my rose cuttings. This was such a beautiful story of an angelic encounter and the love of things that draws people together in unforgettable ways and as a reminder to keep those things at the heart of your relationship! For me, hand down a true winner of 5 out of 5 stars and will be keeping this one on my personal library shelf. There is also a Reader's Discussion Guide, Author's Note and recipe at the conclusion of this novel you'll definitely want to try.

I am a huge fan of Suzanne Woods Fisher . I have yet to read a story by her that was not deep, heart warming, insightful and Godly. This book was not the exception. I adore how Suzanne shows how God plays a hands on, interested role in our lives, even when we do not realize it is His hand at work right away.

Billy Lapp is a head strong, stubborn, rose rustler man. He has abandoned his Amish roots due to a harsh family life and a broken heart. Despite this, his teaching from his youth developed his life long love of roses which has allowed him to pursue his dream of finding the most unique of all roses. Unfortunately, finding that rose means he has to come face to face with his past and the woman that broke his heart-Bess. Unbeknownst to Billy, Bess is engaged to his cousin and best friend Amos Lapp. Throughout this story we see the pain, love, hurt and expectations Billy, Bess and Amos all have of each other, their relationships and the right thing to do in Gods eyes. Guided by George, Billy is taught to look deep to his past and confront his demons head on before he looses everything he loves.

This is a great story with characters you can fall madly in love with. Easy book to recommend to those who love Amish fiction, roses or a beautiful story.

Reading Christmas at Rose Hill Farm was like visiting family friends. The Lapps, Riehls and Zooks are famous in the circle of Amish families between the pages of Suzanne Woods Fisher's books. This book is set just before Christmas near Stoney Ridge Pennsylvania. Young Amos Lapp is soon to wed Bess Riehl. Amid preparations for the Wedding, Bess discovers an ancient rose left in a corner of the greenhouse of her late grandmother Bertha Riehl. Bess spent countless hours in the greenhouse as a girl beside her grandmother and good friend Billy Lapp. Unable to identify this rose, a rose rustler from Penn State comes to the farm to look at the rose. A bigger surprise than the rose is the rustler who turns out to be Billy Lapp, who left the community abruptly four years ago, breaking Bess' heart as he left.

The study of the rose, this re-connection with Billy and upcoming wedding plans with a patient Amos in the middle leave Bess in a turmoil. Billy, in the meantime doesn't make it easy for her, making it clear he wants that rose identified so he can go back to his life among the English. He makes it clear that he has no plans to visit the Lapp farm or see his father and brothers.

I learned a lot about roses in this story. I didn't know that there was as much research into the history of roses nor that there were so many details to account for. I have carried on the tradition of other perennials in my family so I can appreciate how important these studies must be.

I could add so many things to this review but I do not want to spoil anything in this poignant story. I will say that I have found another Christmas book that I will add to my Christmas traditions. I truly enjoyed it. I hope that Suzanne will continue to write about these lovable characters.
