This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It is not a hard read but the words are profound. I am so incredibly blessed when others speak positive words over me, this book not only makes me want to do that for others, it explains why "blessing" is so important. I bought extras to give away. Several have not gotten to it but the ones who have have called me to tell me how amazing they thought the book was. I think it is a must read for parents, school teachers, anyone who is over others in the work place, or anyone who wants to make a difference in others' lives!

Excellent book on principle-centered leadership...

I am a fan of Zig Ziglar and I think he exemplifies a model of doing business founded on character and business ethics. He has been very successful himself applying these ideas and true to himself along the way.

This book is basically about how to be a good example and inspire others by living consistent to your values while applying timeless principles to leadership. Like sports, it is often doing the fundamentals really well that leads to tremendous success. For example, look at Tiger Woods. He always returns to improving and grooving the fundamentals.

What makes this book particularly worthwhile is the quality of the story telling, analogies and examples. This helps the principles to land. While this book is simple and straightforward, it's not necessarily simple to apply especially when you get in a difficult situation that tempts you to violate your own principles.

I have been fairly successful in business and worked for more than one Fortune 100 company in different careers. I also had the good fortune of working in Silicon Valley for such companies as Oracle, PeopleSoft and VMware in a variety of management roles. I have tested these ideas in practice and as a result built winning teams. Any of the books I have bought by Zig Ziglar have paid for themselves many times over. I hope you have the same experience.

This book is an amazing tool for the dad that wants more than anything to have a positive long lasting relationship with their daughter. This book does not sugarcoat the realities of that Dad's today face in protecting their daughter innocence and purity. As a Dad of a current teenage daughter I can only say that I am thankful that this book was given to me as a gift as I fight my daily battle to love my teenage daughter through all the issues that we face on a daily basis.

Great book! Highly recommended for the dad that doesn't mind being held accountable for his daughters perspective on life and God :)

As a Brit, I am also reminded of the admirable way in which Americans embrace 'thought leadership' (which is the context and platform from which this book emerges) which we in the UK tend to view with great cynicism if package doesn't come with a PhD and professional experience attached; Rick Johnson is not (as far as I know) a qualified coach, councillor or relationship professional, but he does have something very powerful and insightful to say that is (for the most part) well-researched, accessible, well-written and useful. It's not 5 star for me, because I am not convinced the overtly Christian subtext is useful or necessary, regardless of my respect for Rick Johnson and his religious beliefs.In summary, highly recommended but approach it with an open mind.

phenomenal read!

"Paperdoll" is more than a good book; it is like a good conversation over coffee with your best friend! Natalie Lloyd takes the story of the woman at the well and uses it to show truth: that we were not meant to be one dimensional paperdolls; that we were meant to live lives of beauty and purpose; and that there is One who loves us and is waiting to meet us right where we are. This book isn't a sermon or a "how-to", it's not full of religious do's and don'ts. Reading it is like having a heart to heart with someone just as real and broken yet intensely loved as you are.

"Paperdoll" shows us that we are all at one point the woman at the well; broken and thirsty and tired of looking for love and purpose from wells that dry up too soon. This book speaks truth to our thirsty hearts and courage to our souls. Breathtaking--and Beautiful

Have you ever read a book that leaves you breathless?

Each beautifully written chapter captures the thoughts and attitudes of the woman from Samaria whose need led to her wellside encounter with the King of kings. Live Outrageously, Be Loved Unconditionally

Simply put, I adored this book. If you have a girl, if you are a girl, if you've ever met a girl, you must buy this book. Paperdoll shares great insights into having God-confidence and living victoriously against the backdrop of the story of the woman at the well. Reading more like a coffee time conversation and less like a book, you will find yourself an instant friend with the author. She is a young woman who has been there and shares those experiences of depleted self-esteem, battling a world that worships perfection, boys, church, school, stress, attacks on faith. I loved how the book makes the spiritual content so real and personal. You know this Bible character and her heartaches. The highlights are the personal stories of the author and people she's encountered in her own life and in her work in ministry. Every chapter provided an A-Ha! moment and tons of things to highlight.

Get ready to be challenged. Get ready to fall in love with a book. And get ready to fall in love with a God who loves you back and wants you to be more than a one dimensional paperdoll.

A "rollicking" fun read

The fact that this series is called "Rollicking Regency" has to be a sign of good things to come. Who doesn't love a good old fashioned regency romance? All the Tea in China is a good start to such a series. Great characters, mystery, intrigue, adventure, a bit of piracy, and of course some romance.

The first paragraph provides a good tasting of the adventure that is to come. "I can abide neither a liar nor a cheat but you may be wont to think me such while I here relate my little tale. Were I not your humble narrator, even now I would scarce believe it anything but mere fiction. I take pen to resolute hand to assure you that what I am about recount is truth, not the least of which involves heartbreak, joy, a Chinese translation of the Gospel according to St. Luke, and, oh yes, a rather large sword." The overall imagery of the story is wonderful- you feel as if you are on the ship sailing with Isabelle from London to Cape Town to China.

The interplay between Phineas and Isabelle is fun to watch. At their first meeting, Phineas comes upon Isabelle examining herself (a smudge on her dress) in a mirror. Being a typical, frustrating sort of male he says "unless your vision is poor, you will not find your image improved by pressing against a mirror. Though I'll not gainsay that many ladies oft believe it otherwise." lol- You can just see the trouble that is in the offing (and the steam coming out of Izzy's ears...)

Overall a great story that I look forward to reading more in the series. My only complaint is that the plot was a bit too predictable and the ending felt rushed. Other than that a wonderful read!

Rollicking fun shifts gears halfway

While quite enjoyable and well written, I found this book to be significantly less "Rollicking" than advertised. This certainly isn't a bad thing, but it is a little unfair to those who (like me) picked it up thinking it would be the ultimate in silly escapist fiction.

Initially, Orcutt presents a heroine whose ambition is to fulfill God's calling, which she believes will bring her adventure, excitement, and a chance to make a difference. She's got all the makings of a slightly over the top - but still good-hearted - romantic heroine, and I instantly fell in love with both her and her narrative voice. But partway through the story shifts focus. What starts out as a swashbuckling tale of high seas and exotic places shifts into a character-driven story about growth and the challenges of cultural clash and differences in morality. Both halves are exceedingly well done, but if you signed up for some pure rollicking fun... Well, this book will not satisfy a craving for an "and then they sailed off into the sunset towards their next great adventure, capes billowing in the wind and swords at the ready" type ending.

Instead it switches gears and the characters mature, asking us to find God's calling in slightly less epic things. It's very well done in this way. It's thoughtful, challenging, and puts characters in several tough situations where they have to remain Christian as they sort through the morally grey. In that way this novel is interesting and challenging.

But it's also a little less crazy, over-the top fun. Which is fine - I still enjoyed it - but it isn't exactly as advertised in my opinion.

Enchanting!

Publicly slighted by her so called friends in English society in Oxford, Isabella Goodrich is so humiliated that stowing away with the livestock on a ship bound for China, is a preferred option!

Phineas Snowe, the mysterious missionary Isabella hopes to join evangelising the lost, is horrified when Isabella is found, delirious, weakened and in a very odorous state. He devises a plan to protect Isabella with every intention of hoisting her off the ship at the next port. Isabella's journey is filled with intrigue, swordplay, danger and language lessons but can she prove to Phineas that God's plan for her lies in the beauty of the Orient?

Jane Orcutt's final novel, published posthumously, is delightful and its description as a Rollicking Regency is perfect. Isabella is an endearing character, well educated yet naive, adept in swordplay but not in social scheming, funny and devoted. Jane has cleverly drawn Phineas, flawed and unappealing yet as his desire to serve the people of China and God is revealed, the reader is drawn to his passionate and caring heart. The dialogue is snappy and fun, the scenery and culture beautifully described and the message of love and forgiveness is gentle and reassuring. All The Tea in China will not disappoint but if you need a further reason to buy this wonderful book, all proceeds will be assisting Jane's husband and sons as they come to terms with the loss of Jane, a loving wife and mother and one very talented author.

Great and Helpful Book

I found this book very helpful. The authoress writes in a simple and understandable manner, which encourages the ordinary man/woman on the street to read the book. The writer writes form a personal point of view and acknowledges her own and human weakness that are in all of us. It is not a book to read once and put down, but to be used each day, or to take notes of and reflect on them often and apply the lessons to the problems we all experience each day of our lives. I would highly recommend it

Inspiring

"Someday" I want to give Stacy Hawkins Adams a big hug for writing this awesome story. While I acknowledge that the Lord inspires Christian Fiction authors, the artist is one who actually toils to bring the work to the pages of a book. Stacy Hawkins Adams efforts were not in vain. The characters of Rachelle and Gabe Covington, Aunt Irene and Melba, Uncle Charles and Troy all reminded me of people in my own life. They were real family and friends that I loved and rooted for as I turned each and every page. The small, quaint, city of Jubilant was a refreshing change, as so many African-American novels are set in urban cities. I can see why Rachelle made the journey there. It made me want to sell my house and move to place where life felt simpler. Now that's good writing.

As a symbol of purpose and destiny, the "someday list" itself, served the story well. I have a list of goals and I have timelines to complete them. I check my schedule a few times a year to see if I'm on task. Sometimes I am, sometimes I'm not, but I am the quintessential list person. However, there was something different about the "someday list" in this novel, even for a planner like myself. Something I describe as the spiritual fiber that may always exist in our list of to do's and to accomplish.

The Someday List made me think about myself and my life. The life lessons were hard to miss. I'm hard pressed to believe anyone would close its pages and not feel the same way. So I give this book the highest review I can assign, because not only did I enjoy it, I was challenged. In my opinion that's the role of literature, to shape our conscious thinking and inspire our actions in a way that also entertains us. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who feels the same.

Defintely Faith-based Fiction

What do you want to accomplish in life? What are your goals? These questions, asked by a childhood friend who is now dying of cancer, along with other things going on in her life, cause Rachelle, the beautiful wife of a wealthy cardiac surgeon and mother of two beautiful children, to take a hard look at her life. She doesn't like what she sees. Her husband, though a good provider materially, isn't meeting her emotional needs. Her life is a round of tennis games, manicures, workouts, parties and volunteering at the "right" jobs. When her husband is in Uganda on a mission trip with his partner and her children are at her parents', she visits her aunt and uncle in her college town, and runs into an old flame, who was more than just a flame. Does she return to her past, or stick with the present? You'll have to read the book to know.

Both Rachelle and her husband appear to have everything; yet both are empty inside. Other people suggest to them that finding Jesus will solve their problems, putting this book squarely in the "find Jesus and solve your problems" type of Christian literature Both have religious discussions with other people and both wonder if they can accept Christianity.

I enjoyed the book, but there is nothing subtle about the religious messages in it.

THE SOMEDAY LIST is a riveting story. Stacy Hawkins Adams also takes you behind the scenes to the life of a woman who by all superficial standards should be happy. From the initial introduction the main characters develop and become real with each scene. The plot has several quirky twists and unexpected believable points. The scenery and description balanced and crisp enabling readers to step into the world the characters live in. Dialogue and character interaction present biblical principle and spark introspection. With THE SOMEDAY LIST, Ms. Hawkins reaches down into the soul of readers and makes them examine the life they have come to live and who they thought they would be.

This is my first time reading a title by Stacy Hawkins Adams but it will not be my last. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a thought provoking entertaining read.

A great, practical guide to hospitality and home management

I loved reading this book. I gathered encouragement and practical tips on every page. The author's personal stories and humor make this a book that is fun to pick up and hard to put down. The book motivated me to plan ahead for cooking, invite others over more often, and do simple things such as lighting a candle at dinner to make family time feel more special. She gives great tips for cleaning that actually made me itch to pull out my cleansers and tackle my housecleaning! I would recommend this book to anyone, old or young, who likes practical suggestions shared in a warm, conversational tone. Tea, anyone?

A good and helpful read!

Hospitality is on the decline, in my opinion. We're busy and don't focus on the art of entertaining like we used to do. I admit I don't have the gift of hospitality. After reading A Life That Says Welcome, I realize that it's not about what I do, but the condition of my heart, rather than my home.

There are tips and techniques to open your heart and home to unexpected guests, use the space you have and maximize it, decorate with what you have and within your budget, efficient entertaining, 'put out' good food that won't consume your time or stretch your budget or challenge your talent--and so much more.

Peppered with stories and biblical references, Ehman offers up a challenge to let your heart be the home of hospitality.

Charles Grandison Finney was the most widely known and successful American revivalist of his time. A back-woodsman who trained for the teaching and legal professions, Finney was converted and called to preach. A Masterpiece

This work is considered a classic in Christian evangelism. Finney, who also served as President of Oberlin College in Ohio, is widely remembered as being one of the 19th century's greatest revivalists. In this series of lectures he explains his principles and methods of revival, and you can see why he was so successful. After a couple chapters defining the basics, he covers the necessary spiritual preparations, with an in-depth focus on prayer. The succeeding chapters give specific "how-to's" of doing a revival, including means of addressing sinners, preaching the gospel, methods for dealing with converts, combatting hindrances, avoiding backsliding, and growing in grace. Finney leaves no ground uncovered; he lays out all the specifics in detail, from prayer meetings to preaching techniques. He clearly believes that his instructions will bear fruit when put into practice.
Good: Finney's focus on the spiritual conditions of the ministers and churches initiating revivals is excellent. A substantial portion of this work is focused on spiritual preparations within the body of believers. He recognizes that a good measure of faith and prayer in the right spirit is needed to begin such a work. He also recognizes that prayers out of self-interest don't work, and that the revival declines if people get boastful and the focus is taken off of God.
Bad: Finney is so evangelistic that sometimes he lacks in pastoral qualities. This is most evident in his lecture entitled "False Comforts for Sinners"; he is so swallowed up by the subject's need for immediate repentance that he shows little willingness to let that person express the other things on his/her heart. Conversion in the Wesleyan tradition is centered more around God's work in the believer's heart. Finney lacks patience in this area. Also, his use of scripture is very selective and involves little exegesis; he doesn't always give fair attention to the texts he employs.
Opinion: In spite of its drawbacks this book is still a masterpiece. It is critical reading for understanding the Second Great Awakening of the 19th Century. In terms of contemporary practice, the only reason it's not more widely read is because of Finney's extensive critique of seminaries. Many of his criticisms are still valid, and the powers-that-be don't like to hear them. Too bad, since it is very important reading for church-folks who want new spiritual fires to be started as they were in Finney's day.

Finney was one of America's greatest revivalists...

I have read and reread this book because it stirs my heart so. This, in spite of the fact that I firmly disagree with Finney's Arminian Theology. You can't really fault him for that; it is an "occupational hazard" faced by all evangelists!

It is quite true that Finney's exegesis tends to be rather shallow and one-dimensional. But the decisive power with which he cuts down and exposes human pretense in this book is masterful. He reveals the human heart for what it is: "desperately wicked, and deceitful above all things; who can know it?" Yet he does this with a passion for the salvation of sinners that is rarely seen in those with such clear devotion to, and high respect for, the Justice of God.

There is nothing mean or hateful in his critique of the natural man; the very purpose of this book is to show how to win the lost. In his day, Finney was roundly criticized as "an innovator", who was unconcerned about maintaining "the dignity of the pulpit". Some of his "innovations" are still with us, such as public "invitations" at the end of a sermon.

Finney was a lawyer by profession, and you can see it in his writing: he lays out his case line-upon-line, always making appeals to reason, and then calling for action once the case has been made.

This book is a masterpiece.
