Don't pass up this book !!!!

I can't say enough about this book. I absolutely loved it and the other books in this series. Each person came to life through the pages and I couldn't wait to find out what their story was.

With Autumn's Return was not my favorite in the series.

After reading and loving the first two books in the Westward Winds series, I was looking forward to With Autumn's Return - the conclusion to the series. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the book as much as I had hoped.

With Autumn's Return started off really good and I thought it was going to be another great read, but then little things in the story started to frustrate me and hampered my enjoyment of it.

For instance, some things in the story seemed to be repeated several times. I'm fine with something being repeated once or twice for clarification or as a reminder, but otherwise I don't like it. I also felt that the ending wasn't much of a surprise and was predictable, for the most part. Another thing that bothered me was how we weren't told what happened with a certain character in the end.

It may not sound like it from above, but there were things I liked about With Autumn's Return. I really liked Gwen's and Harrison's story. I also liked how Elizabeth cared more about helping her patients and people in general than other people's opinions and gossip. Something else I liked was how Abigail and Charlotte(Elizabeth's sisters) were in this book (although I do wish they would have been in the story a little more). The writing was also very good.

Overall, With Autumn's Return was not my favorite in the series. There were things I liked and things I didn't. If you enjoy historical fiction, you might really enjoy this book, even though it wasn't a favorite of mine. There seems to be a lot of people who loved it.

somewhat disjointed

Elizabeth moves to Cheyenne, Wyoming fresh from medical school back East. She remembers the harsh words and scepticism she received from her classmates and others while in medical school, but things in Wyoming are supposed to be different. Here women were allowed to vote, sit on juries and there were even woman bailiffs! Unfortunately becoming accepted as a full fledged doctor by the citizens of Cheyenne is harder than she had anticipated.

Jason Nordling is the attorney whose office is next door to Elizabeth's doctor's office. He is one of her biggest sceptics in the beginning but quickly comes around. He figures that a woman's place is at homes, and when he marries he wants someone who will be devoted to the care and keeping of their children. Definitely not someone whose first priority is to their patients.

Elizabeth and Jason go from arguing to halfway in love in the blink of an eye and all of a sudden all of his concerns about her practicing medicine and the impact it will have on their lives just seems to disappear. The rest of the story is in my mind somewhat odd and disjointed . . . and very unlikely. The writing is not as polished as I would have expected, having read and enjoyed a couple of her other books. I wouldn't know it was written by the same author.

Tied for first place

One of the two best books on relationships I have ever read (the other is "I Kissed Dating Goodbye," by Joshua Harris). I agree completely with the reviewer who said that many people do not abide by the standards Elliot sets up in this book and still have happy, healthy marriages. I'm one of them. That's because our God is forgiving and willing to help us work thorough our mistakes. But I wish I had had this book earlier so that some of those mistakes could perhaps have been avoided.
Even though I've made my own peace by now, my heart still hurts for all the people around me who chase after romantic relationships, thinking that they have to "have" a girlfriend or boyfriend in order to find their own personal worth. I see friends who are on their way to being strong Christians get sidetracked, willing to sacrifice everything they know and believe about God and themselves just for the sake of feeling good about one particular relationship. That never works, and then they have to start from scratch not only romantically, but in their relationship with God that they've betrayed. No wonder it hurts so much!
Stop before you start. Really seek God's will in ALL areas of your life. And if you struggle with romantic temptations like so many of us do, then give Elisabeth Elliot a chance. This book sure made me mad the first time I read it--I thought she was terribly closed-minded. But I was the one who wasn't willing to change for God. Focus on your love story with him before you worry about anyone else.

Mrs. Elliot relates many stories associated with courtship and the methods to go about the process. I wish I had this book earlier in my life. I just broke off a 4 year relationship with a wonderful young lady and I think if I had this book earlier things would have been different. God is the God of second chances so I will use them in any relationships to come. By the way, the mother of a girl I'm interested in gave me this book to read. If you have any guys hanging around your house and you know why they are there, give them this book. I went through it in three days. It's great reading.

Companion book to "passion and Purity".

If you have read or are planning on reading "Passion and Purity" by Elizabeth Elliot, you NEED to purchse this book as well and read it with it. If you think that Elizabeth Elliot's standards are archaic and outdated (As she herself seems to imply people think they are), then read this book. "Quest for Love" will give clear examples of what it means to surrendur your love life to Christ. It is not about a strict set of "rules" and guidelines, but rather it is about a fluid relationship with Jesus Christ based upon the Bible.

One of my favorite stories was about the man who went to China as a missionary, but before he did he kept pursuing different women that he "felt" were the perfect match for him. It was wasn't until he was surrenduring his life to God and living in obedience by being a missionary to China, did he meet the woman who would become his wife. The other tale in here that I enjoyed was about God testing one man's patience and concept of God's timing. He was "ready" to get married when he was 22, but God kept saying no. He would date and try to find someone, but it didn't work. Finally he began handing it over to the Lord, and ten years later he met the woman who would be his wife, who was ten years younger than him!!! When he thought he was ready to get married, well, his wife wasn't!

I loved this book because through the stories and Elliot's narration, she teaches that singleness is a gift from God. We should not view it as a curse whether we are called to singleness for a life-time or for a season, but rather as an opportunity to grow in the Lord and into our God-given gifts. So, that we will not live to get married, but live in Christ. It is a beautiful thing to see a young or old man or woman surrenduring their life to Christ. Do not begrudge your state if you are single, marriage isn't a magic happiness pill, but harder work than you will ever bargain for. Enjoy your singleness and solitude while you have it. That is what this book is about, enjoying Christ in singleness so that if we marry, we can enjoy him in that too.

An easy read that's hard to put down.

I chose this book because it's a continuing series and because I like Paige Lee Elliston. The characters are well developed, making you feel like you know them and that you are part of the story. I will definitely continue reading her novels. The only draw back that I have found is that they're a little too predictable.

Great read if you know a difficult person!

I was intrigued by the title of this book alone. I'm typically a people pleaser and find that those people who are a bit type A really stress me out. I take it personally if people get mad at me, whether they've had a bad day or not. I try to avoid difficult people when given the opportunity but sometimes God puts me smack dab in the middle of them.

I liked how he talked about Mood Mastery and how to focus on the things that you can change and not necessarily the things that you can't change. Another piece of wisdom that I needed to hear was about temperament and how we need to understand the other person's temperament and accept it. It's not that we are saying that their behavior is right or acceptable, but we are saying that we understand their behavior is a part of them in some way.

The fact that some people like being negative is not a new insight, but it was very encouraging to know that I'm not the only one who encounters people who are so negative. That whole section offered encouragement and lifted my spirits a bit as I learned a little about how to react to their negativity.

This book is a great book for absolutely anyone who is around another human being that they find is difficult to love or work with, which I think would sum up to be everyone.

Personal, engaging, and applicable!

Dr. Bechtle speaks to us where we all live: somewhere between someone who HAS driven us crazy, someone who IS driving us crazy, or someone who WILL drive us crazy. This book helped me understand their role and my role, what I can do, and what I can't. It is easy to read because it is at once personal, engaging, and applicable yet deep in processes, steps, and reality based solutions. A must read! His best of several great books.

Words can not describe how great this book is

I was searching for something to read because I was having a horrible issue at work. I just did not know what to do. My co workers were blaming stuff on me and making me not want to come to work. The boss was too hard to talk to, and I did not want to have to play the "he said this" "he did this" games. I was searching for something that was based on the word of God and this book came up. I decided to buy it even though I thought the price might be a little bit high.

I am so glad that I did. I will be referring to this book for the rest of my life. I will probably read it over numerous times. For those of you that are not seeking a biblical based book, it will work for you also. There are only a few references to the bible in this book, however it is perfect for anyone.

Right away I started putting the information that I read into my daily life and things started to change. The main point of the book is that you can not change someone. But you can change your reaction to someone. It helps you to decide if it is really time to leave that person, job, etc. or if it is worth trying to save. It puts the responsibility on us, the reader. It teaches us how we can stay in control and quit giving others control. It helps us to decipher the truth from an emotional reaction. It helps us to see the other persons side.

I read this as I was waiting for my review at work. I am so glad that I did. My boss kept putting off my review and now I know that it was a good thing. I will approach our meeting in a completely different way and I am confident that I will make my point, and help him to understand, without playing the blame game. I will update this review after so that I can tell you that it really did make all the difference!

Very encouraging book

I highly recommend this book. I read it while stationed in Iraq and it encouraged me very much in that situation. It is thoroughly orthodox in its theology and praxis and has nothing to do with modern "psycho-babble" as one other reviewer mistakenly suggested. The book was written over 100 years ago. If it was written today the author most likely would use the term "joyful life" in the title rather than "happy life", but it's clear that her meaning is a happiness that comes from the Lord and is not based on circumstances (which nowadays we would probably call "joy"). Mrs. Smith's secrets to the happy/joyful Christian life are: surrendering all to the Lord, trusting implicitly in the Lord, and immediate obedience to Him. Hard to be more orthodox than that. She gives many anecdotal stories to help the reader understand how much God loves us and how surrender, trust, and obedience result in our abiding more deeply in Christ and consequently having joy in all circumstances.

Archaic title for a classic work on Christian Spirituality

My review is in response to a very "sad" review written from an already established position. The reviewer [I initially named Challies, but someone corrected me, thus I have decided to refer to "reviewer"] gives us what he thinks is the thrust of the book, "What must the Christian DO in his quest for VICTORY?," then offers his simplistic review of Hannah Smith's response, "NOTHING." The reviewer then sums up Smith's work with his critique of "the man-centered and subjective age in which we live," and puts Smith in this category. This is an amazingly simplistic (and ignorant) summation by an educated person - this is why I think it betrays "an already established position."

Hannah Smith lived in the latter half of the 19th century - the terms "happy" and "gay" had different meanings in common use than what we have today. A better title for this book would be "The Christian's Secret to a Joyful Life," but we cannot retitle the work.

Smith is writing to refute the basic practical theology of her strict Quaker background which apparently leaned heavily on the force of a person's determined will and discipline to gain freedom from sin. Many of us have seen how this emphasis, while possibly effective in the life of one generation, can lead to dead works and dry religion in the following generations that lack the intense affections of the initial leaders and have only been given the "right doctrine" to live by.

Let's allow Hannah Smith to speak for herself;

The most difficult thing we have to manage is self....In laying off your burdens, therefore, the first one you must get rid of is yourself. You must hand yourself and all your inward experiences, your temptations, your temperament...all over into the care and keeping of your God, and leave them there. He made you, and therefore He understands you and knows how to manage you, and you must trust Him to do it. Say to Him, "Here, Lord, I abandon myself to thee. I have tried in every way I could think of to manage myself, and to make myself what I know I ought to be, but have always failed. Now I give it up to thee. Do thou take entire possession of me....And here you must rest, trusting yourself thus to Him continually and absolutely....

Perfect obedience would be perfect happiness....
Consecration is the first thing....In order for a lump of clay to be made into a beautiful vessel, it must be entirely abandoned to the potter, and must lie passive in his hands. And in order for a soul to be made into a vessel unto God's honor, "sanctified and meet for the Master's use, and prepared unto every good work," it must be entirely abandoned to Him, and must lie passive in His hands....

Oh, be generous in your self-surrender! Meet His measureless devotion for you, with a measureless devotion to Him. Be glad and eager to throw yourself headlong into His dear arms, and to hand over the reins of government to Him. Whatever there is of you, let Him have it all. Give up forever everything that is separate from Him. Consent to resign from
this time forward all liberty of choice...

This is far from doing NOTHING. Smith's focus is on the most difficult aspect of living for God - the abandonment of YOUR will. She maintains that IF you can truly abandon yourself (I do not think this can be done 100% of the time anyway) God will do His work in you. In the past, some 20 years ago when I first read this book, I wondered if Watchman Nee had read Hannah Smith. In his little powerful book, "Sit, Walk, Stand" he says this,

"If at the outset we try to do anything, we get nothing...For Christianity begins not with a big DO, but with a big DONE." p.14 (Tyndale, 1977)

Hannah Smith and Watchman Nee are both speaking about the concept in Christian spirituality that is called abstraction from the senses. This tradition speaks of a time when the Christian realizes that all the fasting, prayer and reading/memorizing of the biblical text is never enough. There is a point when the believer sees that all of his effort is still...his effort and is "self." In abstraction the believer grasps that he must now continue his quest to draw nearer to God by resting in His presence and trusting in His grace.

Watchman Nee addresses this same concept when he reminds the reader that God worked for six days creating, and concluded with the pinnacle: man. Then God rested on the seventh day. Thus Adam's first day of life was a day of rest. The believer must realize that anything he does must come from resting in God's grace:
"...for whoever enters God's rest also ceases from his own labors as God did. Let us make every effort to enter that rest..." Heb 4:10,11

Maybe this reviewer believes that Nee also distorted scripture here (I should confess that I am not a fan of everything Nee writes).

Again, the previous reviewer: "God calls Christians, not to happiness, but to holiness." Smith's comments on "perfect obedience would be perfect happiness" directly address this accusation. Did the reviewer really even read Smith's book? It is difficult for me to think so. "The Christian's Secret to a Happy Life" is far from the "self-help psychobabel" label the reviewer gives to it.

It is true that Hannah Smith did not have a "happy" life. She had some marital issues and an unfaithful husband; she seems to have suffered some depression; and her theology was not always orthodox - she apparently struggled with the concept of eternal punishment (like Origen!). Nonetheless, this book by Hannah Smith has remained a Christian classic for a reason - it is challenging and good.

And by the way, Hannah Smith did die in great misery - she suffered from arthritis during the final years of her life.

I read it 22 years ago in my first Sunday School class after becoming a Christian. Now, I am using it to teach an adult Sunday School Class. My son, a Bible student at Criswell in Dallas has also found it to be extremely accurate doctrinally. It is an inspiring book that SHOWS us that the "deeper walk" is simply the walk God intended for His children to have in the first place. The chapters on the WILL and avoiding LEGALISM are wonderful in guiding God's children into the wonderful truth in God's Word. Serving and knowing God as H.W.S. indicates is a liberting experience! Matt 11:28-30

Great for preteens.

Hi I bought this for a christmas gift for granddaughter. It looks like a lot of fun, its small book, about 4x5 or so, but it is funny and I can see great for 8-12 yr olds, (i'm guessing.

Fun doodling book for the kids

These books are a blast for kids. We have quite a few of these books, and they get plenty of use. The book is all about funny doodles, which may be tough for very young kids who do to draw well. I would think it better suited for kids older than 6.

I got this for my sister (grown up) for a little extra birthday joke gift - she is on the phone quite a lot during her work hours and she has shown me some unbelievable doodles ... I didn't look through the book at all but she said it was adorable - but really for kids ...

Great Book about Trusting In God

I thought this was a very good book.It was sad in different places but also showed how you have to put your trust in God
Know matter what your going thru.I enjoyed this book and Just
ordered her other book called Julia Hope.Ireally felt sorry
for Elizabeth the oldest of the ten kids she had so much on
her shoulders but she knew that she had to help with all her
brothers and sisters.Again great book.Loved it.

What a Great Series!!

The series was wonderful & Leisha Kelly is a very talented author. When I had read the first book, I did not realize that
it was a series & I was glad to see there was a book 2 & 3. I read both books in a week .......I couldn't put them down!
The depressian era was as she described it, & we can count our blessings that we did not have to live through what
they went through.

I never buy these kinds of books. I have always viewed them as a type of preying on believers or , at best, a sleazy attempt to cash in on faith. This book was different. I read the title and synopsis and passed over it many times but something kept drawing me back to this book. I didn't know why at the time, but I had to buy this book.

I loved it from the very first page. It has a ring of truth. Most of the book is about what happened to Mr. Piper after his experience in heaven and during his long, painful recovery. I bought many copies and gave them to family and friends, urging them to read it as I believe it has the power to transform lives.

About a month after I 1st read this book my son was killed in Iraq. I now know that God was preparing me for what was to come and not be afraid but be joyful that my son is with Him in an indescribly beautiful place, in His presence. I have a peace of mind I NEVER would have known if I had not read this book. I will be forever grateful for this.

I couldn't put it down!

Written in straight-forward, simple style without a lot of "religionese," Don Piper has told the story of his devastating accident, his brief time in heaven and his return to a life full of pain and questions. I read it cover-to-cover in two hours and then loaned out my copy. I would recommend this book to just about anybody -- to those with questions about faith, questions about prayer, questions about life and death and pain which we all face to some extent.

His descriptions of heaven are human ones -- simple, not overly poetic or grandiose, just those of someone who experienced the indescribable and then tried to describe it. I loved the descriptions of the incredible heavenly music and I get the feeling that vast choirs and heightened senses await us there. And despite the incredible experience, Piper found it too personal, too private, and too intimate to share with anyone for over a year after his accident. I'm so glad he found the courage to do so.

I also love the honesty with which he describes his pain and depression and the inevitable questions that we must face when we have close encounters with the Almighty. The God we meet is often not the one we expected, and while we can't understand why God does what he does, we can no longer deny this God we don't understand. And while we hold these two things together, our lives are changed and grace is showered down amid the ruins of what we thought was important to us.

A simply-told story of the greatest mystery of all -- you HAVE to read this book!!

Just enough to make it real

As I glanced through other reviews of this book, I noticed many of the negative reviews voiced the same issue -- "there wasn't enough about his experience in Heaven". But that's what confirmed its authenticity to me along with his self-admitted inability to describe it. I'm confident Reverand Piper conveyed exactly what he experienced and that it wasn't embellished or enhanced merely to satisfy our earthly desires for more information. A lesser author would have done so to sell more books! His experience in Heaven was the most intriguing part of the book, but of greater value was what he did with that experience as well as the mental and physical challenges following his accident. In summary, it's a confirmation of God's promises to us regarding Heaven, a reminder that we all serve a purpose for Him while on earth, and a prompting regarding our responsibility to ensure others are saved.

Don't forget the dancing shoes!

Vienna, Bosnia, Los Angeles. The past, the present, the future. Alabama, Prague, London. One-two-three, one-two-three. The author waltzes between the glamorous and the mundane and the uplifting like the cadence of a favorite Strauss piece, and most of the time just as quickly.

Hardly a straightforward "boy meets girl" type of romance, halfway through the book I found myself wondering why the publisher labeled it a romance at all, let alone an inspirational one. The central plot concerns two middle-aged women, one a world-renowned Czeckoslovakian concert violinist and the other the American wife of a successful pastor, united by the gifted young man they both call "son."

Through a quirk of fate, the young man isn't the only thing they share. Both women harbor devastating secrets. In fact, everyone involved with this unlikely threesome hides something. Clandestine affairs, aborted babies, terminal illness, stolen art masterpieces, undisclosed occupations, unrequited love, guilt, shame, despair -- a veritable transcontinental Peyton Place.

The very human tendency to refuse to come to grips with past mistakes serves as the villain of Blue Mist on the Danube. We tend to be our own worst critics, and forgiveness -- of others as well as self -- comprises this unusual novel's orchestrated refrain. The unique way in which each character vanquishes this intangible villain I leave you to discover.

True to the tradition of 20th century romantic fiction, the final stanza features a happy, if bittersweet ending. But don't forget a comfortable pair of dancing shoes. As Fell whirls you from the present to the past, and flashbacks within flashbacks, to spin back out to the present and beyond, it makes for a blistering read without them.

I read this as part of The Reconciliation Trilogy, a 3-in-1 compilation of the Sagas of a Kindred Heart trilogy. I found the writing style dated in all three books. There was a lot of telling, too many characters (and too few characters with any character), a lot of adverbs, awkward use of point of view (too much "she thought"), and too many italics (for an ereader--the italics might not be such an issue in a paper version).

It would have benefited from some serious trimming of excess verbiage, as this would have improved the pace. It would also have benefited by having fewer flashbacks, both flashbacks to previous generations and flashbacks to earlier points in the story.

Blue Mist on the Danube was nominated for a Christy award in 2000, and is easily the best novel of the three. However, it still suffered from too many characters, too many subplots, and too many flashbacks--which were especially confusing, as most of them didn't have dates either. There was also a subplot around art theft that fitted into the plot arc of the overall trilogy, but overloaded this plot to the point it distracted from the central themes of family relationships and forgiveness. Despite this, and the fact that it took far too long to get to the actual story, it was my favourite of the three books. However, it's still not something I'd re-read.

FELL HAS DONE IT AGAIN!

Veteran author Doris Elaine Fell has done it again! Blue Mist on the Danube is another powerful testament to the literary talent we've come to admire in her other books. Her sparkling dialogue gets you so absorbed, you feel like you're sitting there with the characters. Her descriptive settings are so masterfully sculpted, you can see the famous landmarks of Vienna, smell and feel the velvety roses. And the story line? From the opening pages, the main character's reflections of the past are so skillfully woven into the scenes, they make the reader keep turning the pages, asking "What's behind this?"
There's mystery, intrigue, and international conspiracy in Blue Mist, all carefully sewn together with threads of romance. It has a wide cast of characters--all with secrets--and its takeaway is forgiveness, making it a powerful, moving, emotive read.
