Hold On Just A Little While Longer

This novel, Dreams That Won't Let Go by Stacy Hawkins Adams, is the final offering from Ms. Adams' Jubilant Soul trilogy. While this book does stand alone, it is with great pleasure that I am happy to have read installment one, The Someday List. Interestingly enough, without having read installment two of the series, Worth A Thousand Words, I was able to pick right back up with the ongoings of the Burns family. In Dreams That Won't Let Go, the Burns clan grapples with issues that each has been holding within. Grateful to the grandparents who raised them, the three Burns children, Reuben, Indigo and Yasmin, can not help but to wonder if somehow their dreams have been deferred.

As Reuben, Indigo and Yasmin face their fears, they hope to one day realize their dreams, and to have the kind of family they each long for. After a more recent upheaval, and with the aid of the supporting characters, Peyton, Reuben's wife, and Max, Indigo's fiancee', as well as Pastor Taylor, the Burns family struggles to overcome pain and hurt that has festered for years.

I enjoyed reading this selection. The characters are well-developed, and believable. I recommend this selection to parents afraid to let go and let God and any reader that enjoys inspirational selections.

Family Issues

Dreams That Won't Let Go by Stacy Hawkins Adams is a story about the Burns family. Indigo Burns is newly engaged and so excited for this next journey in life. She really needs her family to be there for her, mainly her mother, but that all changes when her brother, Rueben, comes back home to Jubliant, Texas. Rueben has been away from home for years, with no explanation of why he never came back. Now that he has returned all of the family's attention turns to him and away from Indigo and her younger sister, Yasmin.

Rueben is returning for healing. But cannot seem to start the process because of the bitterness and betrayal that his sisters feel towards him. It takes trials and hard times for the Burns family to come together. Will they ever be able to mend their relationship? Will this family be a loving unit once again?

Adams is an amazing writer, I never just got into the book. There was no real climax in the story. I did enjoy the message of family sticking by each other and communicating even through the bad times. If you are a fan of Adams, I think you will enjoy. It was just not a favorite of mine.

Dreams That Won't Let Go is the third installment in the Jubilant Soul series written by Stacy Hawkins Adams. Lessons of fear of failure, family overshadowing, forgiveness and letting go can be found among the pages and through the characters. When Reuben Burns decides to uproot his wife, Peyton, and his son, Charles David, from Seattle no one expected all the changes that would come with his return to Jubilant, Texas. His sisters, Indigo and Yasmin, are less than welcoming to him. They want answers from Reuben, but neither of them is willing to ask him the questions. And since Reuben was not talking either, a generous amount of uncertainty grew among them.

Upon his return to the place he grew up, Reuben did not expect his parents to dote on him so much that they are almost forgetful of the other important people in their lives. Even though, Indigo tried to keep her thoughts on planning her wedding, her mind stayed on her parents doting on Reuben. It is not until Yasmin, the baby of the family, decides she is grown enough to make her own choices that the eyes of everyone are slowly opened. Will the Burnses be able to move past the hurt and the pain creating a riff?

Even though I did not read the first two offerings in the Jubilant Soul series, I did not feel as though I was missing anything. The emotions of the characters are relatable and believable. However, the story fell a little flat in the climax area. Adams did a great job of building suspense around what was going on with Reuben and the real reason behind him leaving and returning home. However, when the reason is revealed I had an "oh is that all?" reaction. I recommend Dreams That Won't Let Go to readers of Christian fiction, Stacy Hawkins Adams works, and to those wanting to see what can happen when instructions, actions or information are misinterpreted.

It came at just the right time

The most important thing for me in this book is the reassurance that somewhere inside, I still love God. I was beginning to think I'd lost my faith, I'd even told God "I give up on you." But I really didn't mean it. I felt like I was a failure and not good enough for God any more, because I couldn't hold back my own depression and self-hate. But Wilkerson writes, "If you were running from God, you could probably understand why the testing and severe trials kept coming on... But you are not running, not rejecting Him in any way... You yearn to please God and want only to serve Him with all that is in you. That is why your hurting is so debilitating... From somewhere deep inside you, a voice whispers, 'Maybe I'm defective..."
How did Wilkerson know? I don't cry, but reading that made me cry.
He talks later about the crosses we have to bear. I guess mine is heavy sometimes. I wanted to die. I wanted to remove my darkness from God's light in this world. But this book has helped me to see I am not alone among Christians.
Because I don't understand real love, I often feel separated from God's love. That in turn leads to doubt about whether I'm truly Christian. Wilkerson discusses this also, and says that doubt itself is an insidious enemy. If I can call doubt my enemy, I can fight it with God's help.
I didn't know if I'd read this book because I really was ready to give up. But, it came along at the right time, and had the right title, too.

I gave up....

Sorry in advance if this review is a long one, but this book is my testimony. I have shared this story with many. And I always get the same response..."WOW!"

As a young child, growing up in a southern baptist family, I always thought my beloved grandmother figured I'd go to hell over her dead body. every Sunday for years, I sat there with her. She's gone now, but sitting in church with her are some of the most precious memories I have of my childhood. Accordingly, I was saved and baptised at 9 years old. Not unlike so many others who came to Christ as young kids, when I reached my teens, I got away from God. Doing typical teen stuff, and having a good time. I never stopped believing, I never stopped accepting, I was just too busy being a teenager, I didn't have time for Him. A few years pass, I got married, started having kids, and life was not all that great. My husband and I struggled with low paying jobs, trying to make ends meet, not always making it happen. At the same time, I had been feeling a "pull" in my spirit, I knew the Lord was trying to "bring me back" so to speak. Then one payday came around and I was sorely dissappointed to see that the time keeper had shorted me 6 hours. I didn't even have enough to buy food for the next two weeks till I got paid again. It was literally the last straw. We were struggling so hard, we'd only been married about 4 years, we all know how those first years of marriage can be. It was tough. anyway, it was my lunch break that day when I picked up my pay check and saw the mistake. I was just driving around in my car, crying, sobbing so hard I could barely see. I started yelling and shaking my fist in the air and screaming "Why God?! I know I don't go to church like I should, I know I don't pray like I should, but I've ALWAYS believed in You! Why are You letting these things happen to me?? I give up Lord! I give up! I can't do this anymore!!! I give up." I was so angry, at myself, at life, at God, at the time keeper who made the mistake. So then after I'd ranted thru my lunch hour I got back to my office. As I rounded the corner to get to my desk, I saw there was a book on my desk that was not there when I left. As I got closer to my desk, the book title slammed at me like a train. It said "Have You Felt Like Giving Up Lately?" I nearly fainted, I was rooted to the spot. It was spooky. About that time, my friend in the office was coming towards me and I said, "did you see who put this book here?" and she said "It was me. I was out at the book store at lunch time, I passed this book several times, and something just kept telling me to buy it for you, so I did." I told her about my lunch time rant, and telling God "I give up". and we both were astounded. at the exact same time I was telling God "I give up!", she was buying this book. This is the book that brought me back to God, to Christ. It started me on the path of finding out what my calling was, my ministry (not a physical ministry as in a church, a spiritual ministry). That was nearly 20 years ago, and I've never left His side again. This book was exactly what I needed at that moment, and He heard me. This book changed me forever. I wish I could give it 100 stars.

This book hit to the heart of the reality of life

I purchased the book, for the simple fact that I did feel like giving up. I brought it home thumbed through it, then put it down; thinking to myself another book about God and I won't read it. Needless to say I began at page one, and went through the entire book. I could not believe the information that the author put in the pages hit home to the reality that God really loves you and is right there waiting to pick you back up now that your down. My recommendation, if you are distressed with life and feeling that God cannot love you because of sin in your life then this book is for you. Take Care.

On my short list of good books on marriage

In Defending Traditional Marriage, Dr. Willard Harley, Jr. has declared war on those factors that end marriages or relegate them to misery. Using guidelines from marriage vows themselves, Dr. Harley shows the extraordinary care that married couples expect when they marry. He explains how to rebuild that level of care, the obstacles to it, and ways to avoid infidelity and divorce. He confronts legislative and social enemies that have decayed marriage, and ends with the dangers of legislating homosexual marriage.

As a man in love with one woman for over forty years and as a behavioral psychologist with thirty years of practice in marriage counseling, Harley passionately defends marriage. He eschews the popular ideas that marriage should not meet the emotional needs of the spouses, that marriages in trouble are not worth saving, that couples should live independently while living in a marriage, or that children can do just fine in divorced families. However, he also decries abuse in marriage, and urges spouses in abusive situations to leave if the abuser will not change.

He divides the book into four sections: Extraordinary Care, Romantic Exclusivity, Permanence, and One Man, One Woman. From a practical level, he makes a lot of sense. In the extraordinary care section he shows that a couple's meeting of four emotional needs usually saves a marriage: sexual fulfillment, recreational companionship, affection, and intimate conversation. He lists others but in his view, these are the biggies. He encourages couples to try to meet each other's emotional needs and to try to avoid love busters like selfish demands, disrespectful judgments, angry outbursts, dishonesty, annoying habits, and independent behavior. His ideas are both workable and sensible in most cases.

Harley doesn't deal overtly with spiritual ramifications or reasoning, although the underlying philosophy is there. He doesn't quote Scripture. Most readers could feel comfortable giving the book to non-Christian friends who would reject overtly Christian books.

Defending Traditional Marriage is well written and engaging. Harley keeps the reader turning pages with strong reasoning, readable discussion, and occasional anecdotes. The Outsider

The Outsider is a beautiful historical novel - by Kentuckian Ann Gabhart - set in the 1800's in a Shaker community - Pleasant Hill - located near Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Just this alone made me want to read this novel. I live less than 10 miles from the restored Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill and have spent many hours roaming the surrounding hillsides.

In this book, the main character is a young Shaker woman - Gabrielle - who is completely happy living with her Shaker brothers and sisters , living the life of purity and hardwork. That is until an outsider - Dr. Brice Scott - intrudes on their lives and makes his way into her thoughts, and eventually her heart. The Shaker culture and society are so realistic I felt like I was there, like I knew these people. Living so near a restored Shaker village, I have grown up reading and researching the Shaker culture, so this book is very true to the life these religious people lead.

Because the entire story doesn't happen just on the grounds of the Shaker village, readers are given a realistic view of war during this time and historical medical information, in addition to the treatment of strangers to the Shaker village. There are also other glimpses into this disciplined lifestyle, from the demanding hard work to the fanatical religious servies.

This book was a fascinating read and Mrs. Gabhart's flowing prose seemed to leap off the pages and jump straight into your heart. Gabrielle's transformation from the quiet, shy girl into the beautiful young woman is presented with sobering details and fleeting views from the past.

I recommend this book, not only as a work of historical fiction surrounding the lives of the Shakers, but as a delightful work of pure unadultered literature. The Outsider is a worthy find among the multitude of fiction and genre books being released today.

A bit too much blood for my taste

I thought overall this book was a good value and well worth the read. I read pretty much every genre, so I'm not really picky, and the fact that this FREE kindle book had almost no errors was amazing. The quality of the writing was excellent, and I enjoyed the novel setting and characters (I'd never heard of the Shakers before). The reason I marked the title down to three stars is because about halfway through the book the storyline changes from an emphasis on the main character, the Shaker girl with the gift of sight, to her love interest, including many many pages about the graphic nature of war. The many scenes of people being scalped, shot, tomahawked, and otherwise bleeding all over the snow were unexpected and quite unwelcome. I personally stay away from this kind of violence in books, and would have never read it had I known. So for me personally this was not the best choice, but if you have the stomach for that sort of stuff, then I think overall you will enjoy the unique storyline because it is well written.

Fantastic!

I thought The Outsider by Ann H. Gabhart was fantastic. It was a page turner. You never knew from one chapter to the next what was coming, and the ending was a real surprise! The book delved into the history of the Shaker society which made the book very interesting because each page, almost, had something to share about a society that has long since past away but it is still a part of our country's early history. Gabhart did a fantastic job of portraying the society as they really were complete with the good and bad about the society. The story is about a forbidden love because the Shakers, as other societies of its sort, did not believe in marriage so you never really knew all the way through the book how it would end. Each page, of course, you wanted her to choose romance with the handsome doctor, but she was a devote Shaker and one that was greatly respected in that society as one of their visionaries. The book takes you into the inside of the Shaker community and shows you how it really was to live, belong and devote your life to the community instead of to self. I have read lots of Amish books, for the same reason because I want to see into a community that existed a long time ago, and was different from normal society. There are many Amish books, so this book was really refreshing in that you can learn about the Shaker society. Enjoy!

A wonderful book for our girls at church. I am completely happy to see such a book written from a Christian perspective. The Bible is relevant to young girl's lives and Haley has tackled a real problem with real answers from God's word.

Must read for preteens and teens

This is a great book to help teens and preteens learn how to handle the frenemies they will face in their lives. I wish this book had been around when I was a teen, but honestly, the advice in it helped me see things about my own interactions with friends now. Very helpful and a must read for both parents and teens who will face this.

Admitting to doing life "backwards," Jones makes no apology for it. As the Alabama speaker with Vertical Ministries defines it, a backward life consists of first loving God and then loving others (Mark 12:29–31). As he says, "[L]ove for others is our love relationship with God gone public." Jones exhorts fellow Christians to embrace the "backward" life by exposing secular society's notion that self-esteem, self-promotion and personal power are the chief means of happiness. Controversially, Jones states that low self-esteem has been given an unnecessary bad rap, for it is frequently the catalyst that propels individuals into recognizing a need for God. He uses biblical stories to recount and punctuate his points, arguing that readers must discover the Bible to understand who God is and why God's ways are so unconventional yet compelling. Jones takes a hard line at times, exhorting readers to saturate their minds with biblical principles, plead with God through constant prayer and "bleed" or expunge any plans that take precedence over obedience to God. A great book!

I love this book. I saw Jarrod speak on the topic of the Backward Life, and it was so compelling. It made me completely re-evaluate how I view the world as a Christian. I decided to read the book and loved it! Jarrod is a great writer, and he does a great job of explaining how "backwards" our lives are to the world if we are Christians. He has great stories to make all of his points, and he always manages to back up what he says with the Bible.

I won't ruin it for you, but the end of this book is absolutely incredible. I finished the book and just sat in my chair astounded.

Warns believers away from the pursuit of self

Everyone wants a purpose. Those who trust in Christ and even those who don't are pining for a reason to live, a hope for the future, and fulfillment in happiness. In THE BACKWARD LIFE, Jarrod Jones tackles the question that must face preachers every week as they prepare their Sunday sermons: Is it possible to live like Jesus in a culture that worships "self?" According to the author, the answer is a resounding "yes." In this concisely written first book Jones illustrates through his own experiences and those of others how they were able to transition from a "me" centered life to a Christ centered life.

Jarrod Jones was an NCAA Division I basketball player and enjoyed all the goodies that life in the spotlight had to offer. Yet somehow none of this provided satisfaction in any lasting way. He felt empty. In college he began listening to God more carefully and soon his life was turned upside down. When he drew closer to the Creator, "self" no longer occupied the throne in his life. As he learned to focus on Christ and put others first, his life took on new meaning, and fulfillment became a lasting reality.

Whether you are a Fundamentalist or a curious seeker of God, the book does require a basic acceptance of the Bible as the word of God. Jones highlights the Biblical truths that allow believers to understand why they were created, how to make the most of their time while they are here, and what to expect once their life on earth is over.

Just as Jesus was able to refine the Ten Commandments down to two basic statements, the author ably demonstrates how applying these principles will lead to a full and rewarding life. well worth reading

I could probably read a book of grocery lists by Lisa Jewell and still give it 2 stars. She's brilliant. However, this was not my favorite of her works. I enjoyed reading it but at times I felt like I was being steered toward the wrong characters. While that's all a big part of suspense and "whodunit" it worked out in such a way during this novel that I was dissatisfied at the ending. The character of Pip, in particular, was such a huge focus and then kind of disintegrated. It was definitely a unique story and as expected from Lisa Jewell, filled with the very real ups and downs of community, interpersonal relationships, and modern life. I recommend it without particularly loving it, either.

Inspirational book

I'm not normally a big fan of parenting books. It seems as if they all have very definative ideas of what "to do" and what "NOT to do." Inevitably I end up feeling guilty as I find myself commiting actions listed under the "what not to do" list. I found this book very inspirational, it is full of cute, meaningful stories and suggestions of ways to handle different situations with your young daughters. I found myself unable to put it down once I got started. It's a wonderful glance into the world of "GIRLS!"

Beautifully done.

"The Girls" is a beautifully written family drama come psychological thriller - to sum it up simply, it is full of vibrant colourful characters involved in deliciously dark goings on...

After a fire destroys their home, Clare and her two daughters Pip and Grace move into a flat overlooking a community garden - in the garden all the kids from the surrounding homes mill about together, doing what kids do. 30 years ago a young girl called Phoebe died in the garden..as Clare, Pip and Grace become part of the whole, events are set in motion that may have tragic consequences...

As always with Lisa Jewell it's characters first - she sets the scene with a great eye for detail when it comes to people and their motivations - writing with a style that is so involving that you sink into the lives of this fictional group and feel every moment with them.

I loved Pip - we see her letters to her absent father and hear her thoughts on what is going on around her - she often provides a birds eye anchor to proceedings and is a really beautifully drawn character. The cast as a whole are all highly intriguing, from Adele with her brood of three home schooled girls and her perfect husband, to Rhea the pensioner who has seen it all and Clare herself who is struggling to fit in and get used to a very new kind of bohemian inclusive lifestyle. The garden is a character in and of itself with its nooks and crannies and wide open area's where the kids roam free, missing tea, out until all hours, creating their own little bubble in the world.

As the arrival of Pip and Grace upsets the balance within the relationships, the story ebbs and flows - constructively speaking it is really well done, with the end at the beginning so to speak and then the events leading up to and after - the whole thing is entirely enthralling and the minute nuances and little details that Lisa Jewell embeds within the story keep you fascinated from first page to last.

"The Girls" is an ensemble character driven drama with added mystery, gorgeously complex, utterly authentic and a truly addictive reading experience.

Highly Recommended.
