To go along with my new obsession of reading Amish books, I was quite thrilled to read Suzanne Woods Fisher's newest book, "The Calling" which is the second book in the Inn of Eagle Hill Series! I am a big fan of hers, and especially of her "The Adventures of Lily Lapp" Series, as is my 7 year old!
In "The Calling", Bethany is restless after a failed relationship, and doesn't quite know what God wants her to do with her life. A group of 5 Amish sisters have helped ease her mind of her problems by hiring her to help clean out their house, but she can't keep her mind off the annoying Jimmy Fisher who finds Bethany so enticing.
Meanwhile, Bethany's job of cleaning is not as easy as she thought as the group of sisters are quite the hoarders and refuse to get rid of anything. When she finds a trunk full of human bones and skulls, Bethany secretly wonders if the sisters are murderers and is apprehensive about returning to finish the job.
I did not read the first book in this series, and that did make it a bit confusing in the beginning, but after awhile I did get the hang of it. However, I would definitely recommend reading the first book in the series before reading "The Calling." This book does go back to some of the issues discussed in the first book though, and answers some questions about Jake, the man Bethany was previously interested in. There were definitely some twists and turns in this book and it was a bit suspenseful at times! I would rate this book as 4 stars!

Another Captivating Suzanne Woods Fisher Read!

I don't know what it is about this series, but here again, just like in the first book, I found the secondary characters very endearing: Got a kick out of 14 year old, Mim, posing as Mrs. Miracle and writing a newspaper column, trying to help her readers solve their problems. I seldom read the Discussion Questions in the back of the book, but I did this time, and had an Aha moment. Nope, didn't pick up any clues as to the identity of Stuck, one of Mims readers. I also liked 'the Sisters', those giving souls, and Bethany does a good job of helping us get to know them, as she de-clutters/cleans their messy, neglected house. Neglected, because they are so busy serving others, as Bethany duly noted.
I was happy to finally hear more about Bethany's mother, as I was left with many questions after book one. I imagined a few different scenarios where she might have gone to. However, what I learned here was not one of them. So sad! As to, Bethany's dad, I still can't fathom an Amish person in good standing with the church, getting divorce and remarry.
This book touches on mental illness, and how some Amish view it and choose to deal with it. Have to say though, it's really not unlike in other cultures, and even in mainstream society you see the same happening. Some people don't fully understand it, or choose not to, perhaps not wanting to deal with the pain of it. Even with all the information on this topic, available nowadays. Suzanne Woods Fisher dealt with it very sensitively in this story, while giving the reader a window into an Amish view on this rather touchy topic.
Must I really wait till July for 'The Revealing, book three in this series??

With this second installment of The Inn at Eagle Hill series we shift the focus from Rose to Bethany. The Calling takes up a couple of months after The Letters leaves off. Bethany has begun her job at the adorable Sister's House. She's trying to make a dent in the clutter but progress is very slow. In the midst of doing her job she makes a few startling discoveries. The sisters are hiding some secrets that turn Bethany's world upside down.
Then there are the issues with the two men in her life. First there is Jake Hertzler, he's her intended but there's something not quite adding up. Then there is the charming Jimmy Fisher. Bethany is definitely drawn to him, but he seems to be drawn to anything in a skirt!
With this book the author delves into a rarely seen topic in Amish fiction; mental illness. The way it is addressed is done with honesty and candor. I was pleased to read about it and thought it honored the topic.
One of my favorite scenes involved Bethany and Rusty and making bread. I can't wait for you to read it. I actually teared up because the dialog was so moving. Bethany comes a long way in this book and it is easy to relate to the struggles that she faces. Some things are universal and we see that in the contrasts between the Amish and the English in this series.
Shootfire! you're just going to love this series and especially this book.
