Julie Lessman Does it Again!

First off, I am a truly dedicated fan of Julie Lessman’s. I have read each of her books at least a dozen times, and I was awaiting the release of “Surprised by Love” for months! To sum up all of my emotions, I will simply say that I was not disappointed in the least. Lessman has truly outdone herself with the latest novel about Meg (a bookworm that I can personally relate to) and her “older brother” figure Bram. The novel also perfectly, and I mean perfectly follows the relationship of swoon-worthy Logan McClare and Cait. In every single novel, Lessman captures me with incredible imagery, witty word use, jaw-dropping plot twists, and emotional dialogue. Every single member of the McClare clan captures my heart, and I love each of them like my own flesh and blood.
Oh, and did I mention that I read this book in literally 5 hours? True story. I did not put it down. Lessman had me hypnotized and enthralled from the start. I eagerly await her next installment. If one is in the mood to laugh (literally out loud), cry (also literally), swoon (definitely), and dig deeper into the relationship of the One and Only Lord, Julie Lessman is the one to go to. She is and will forever be my favorite author, and I will eagerly await her next novel.

Bad Message, Annoying Characters

I haven't read the first book in the series, but I ordered this book because I liked the previous book, Dare To Love Again. It had its problems, but overall, it was a good book. However, I'm not here to talk about that. Here's my honest opinion on Surprised By Love:
To start, it's about a girl named Meg who has come back from a year spent in Paris, France with a make-over. She's so changed, her own family doesn't even recognize her at first. I'm not one to be upset if a girl wants to wear a little make-up and maybe change her hair color, but having a young woman changing her looks so drastically that NOBODY recognizes her isn't what I would call a good message. It's made worse by the fact that this story teaches young, impressionable girls who read it that you'll never get a boyfriend or husband if you aren't drop-dead gorgeous and change yourself to fit society's standards of beauty.
Shouldn't we be teaching them that yes, it is good to take care of your appearance, but what's more important is inward beauty? I can understand her wanting to lose some weight, maybe even dye her hair, but the thing that bothered me the most was her saying that glasses and freckles are unattractive. Yes, freckles. It mentions on several occasions that she uses powder to cover up her freckles. The book even refers to them as "unsightly freckles." What, are freckles ugly now?
And then there's the fact that she now wears contact lenses. Should we really be telling young women that glasses are unattractive and ugly? Once again, the book refers to glasses as "unsightly." As a glasses-wearing woman myself, I found this offensive. Not to mention the fact that the first contact lenses were made of glass, and could only be worn for a couple hours at a time. It was only in the 1930's that plastic contact lenses were first invented. But back to the topic at hand, the book does at least mention that Meg could only wear them for "several hours at a time" (even though it was more like two or three hours at the most in real life). Back to the book, we never actually see Meg wear her glasses again, nor is it mentioned that she has to wear her glasses at all in the book. For all we know, her glasses could have been dropped from the top of the Eiffel tower. They're mentioned only once in the book (and no, her complaining about how "ugly" glasses are does not count).
I knew the book was about Meg getting a make-over, but I thought we had advanced beyond the idea that a woman has to be beautiful for a man to love her--especially since this is a supposedly `Christian' book! I thought maybe the book would be about Meg changing her whole appearance, then realizing appearances aren't everything, and maybe even start wearing her glasses again and stop covering up her freckles, so she could learn to be comfortable in her own skin without wearing a `mask', so to speak. But, no. I thought, at the very least, that the leading man, Bram, would say that he had always loved her for who she was, but sadly, this book does say that he was never even attracted to her until she became beautiful. He even mentions several times that he wishes she looked the way she did before, so that he wouldn't feel attracted to her anymore. WHAT? Furthermore, this book clearly states that Meg only felt more confident and happy after she underwent this make-over and gained everyone's approval. This is NOT what we should be teaching young women.
One thing that really made me want to throw this book across the room was Logan McClare. In the last book, I was rooting for him, until I discovered he had lied to Cait yet again about just how intimate his previous `flings' were, resulting in his son Jamie. But if you've read that book, you already know all this. Going into this book, I was waiting for him to be redeemed. He was not. In fact, this book made me hate his character. In this book he seems to have a complete personality change. He becomes possessive and controlling over Cait--at times even forcing her to choose between him and Andrew, even when she says there is nothing between her and Andrew. He tells her several times that he is not allowed in HER house at all. This is where I lost it. What right does he have to tell her who she is and isn't allowing into her house? And he has no valid reasons either--just the fact that Andrew is pursuing Cait like he is. Logan has no claim over her--he is not her boyfriend or husband. He controls her and manipulates and lies to her repeatedly. He even, at one point, grabs her forcefully and kisses her against her will (something, I might add, he beat up another guy over, even though THAT particular kiss was not forced upon her). He does, eventually, change a little, but at that point, I was beyond caring. He had already proved himself to be a jerk. I have no idea why she fell for him after all the stuff he put her through and the way he treated her.
Cait, herself, is another issue. She is the epitome of needy. At points in the book, even after she has already made it painfully clear that there will be no romantic future between her and Logan together, she throws herself into his arms and cries on his shoulder and touches him (caressing his cheeks and whatnot). Is it any wonder he's as strung out and irritated as he is? At points in the novel, he tries to leave to give himself some space to get over his feelings or whatever (points for him, in that aspect), so what does she do? Instead of allowing him to make his own decisions, she flings herself at him and starts saying how she `needs' him and begs him to stay her friend, crying about how she `loves him more than anything', but that they `just can't' be together. She clings to him like a spider monkey and makes him feel bad about something that is probably a good idea. Woman, please. Stop stringing him along and allow him to get over you.
Moving on, another problem with this book was the pacing, just like in the previous one. It seemed to drag at points, and the main plot doesn't even come into play until well after the 100 page mark. I found myself skimming and at two points, skipping pages just to find a place where things pick up. At 408 pages, I was so glad for it to end when I finally got there. And one of the main things I loved about the last book--the setting, the historical details, and seeing San Francisco how it was before the big earthquake in 1906--was nearly absent in this book.
Overall, the only things I liked about the book were Nick (who was only in one or two scenes, so if you're looking to catch up with Nick and Allie in this book, just forget about it) and the fact that this story shows that people who abuse and mock others are usually the ones who have been abused or mocked in the past, or are dealing with something painful in their life. It made Devin more human to know the things he went through (won't spoil it for you, though) and, though it doesn't excuse his behavior towards Meg in the past, I was sympathetic for what he happened to him in his past (but it doesn't matter, because any humanity he possessed was lost by the end because the author needed a way to get rid of him, but more on that later).

The end is what bothers me the most. I don't mind a love triangle, or even two in the same story, but for goodness sakes, at least make it believable and resolve it well. From the start it's painfully clear who is going to get the girl. And my biggest problem with the book: How does this story resolve the love triangles? They have both Andrew (Cait's other love interest) and Devin (Meg's other love interest) cheat on their lady. Because, you know, God forbid the women in this story should actually have to choose between two guys who are both decent men. No, one has to be a big jerk that cheats on her so she doesn't have to handle the incredible hard task of being a grown-up and making a tough decision. I mean, I can't believe for a second one of these men would cheat on their lady.
Let's pause for a moment and think about the big character arc Devin went through, and at the end we're just supposed to believe he actually cheated on Meg--just tossing all that development out the window? And then there's Andrew. Nothing in the book suggests he would cheat on Cait. It's like the author just tossed that in there to give us a reason to hate the men and wrap things up quickly because she was already pushing on 400 pages. I don't see why she had to villainize both men, and wish she had gone the road less traveled and handled it in a better fashion.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. It has its good points--like all books do--but ultimately, there were a lot more bad than good in this novel. The previous book, Dare To Love Again, has it's issues, and not everyone may like it, but I would recommend giving it a try and just skipping this book altogether. As for the first book in the series? Well, I've never read it, so that's up to the reader, but there are a lot of references in the second book and plot lines that carry over from it, so it might be helpful to read it first.

Another Sizzler from Julie Lessman!

Julie Lessman is an author known for her romance books that sizzle and make you swoon. Yes, they are Christian and very much so, but they are also heavy on the romantic tension and relationships between husband and wife. That is why I love her! I can read a book like this one without any detail that shouldn't be there but I still get the mushy emotions between characters.
This book here is number #3 in the Heart of San Francisco series. Needless to say, I thoroughly loved it! Like it would be anything but love, right? Her characters are soo realistic and the stories are very plausible. They really do make you swoon while reading them. I loved hearing more about Cassie and Alli, Nick and Jaime, along with Caitlyn and Logan. These people feel like family and you want to find out what has been going on in their lives from the last book. The main characters in this book happen to be Megan McClare and Bram Hughes.
If you have read the previous books you will remember Bram and Megs. Megs is the shy, withdrawn child who was always getting picked on for her looks but Bram was her protector, mentor and guidance. He was always there for her. no matter what. At the end of the last book Megs is taking a trip to Paris for one year to visit friends of her mother. So the book opens with her coming back. And she comes back a very changed person. Different in her relationship with the Lord and her appearance. Wowza! Nothing like completely changing a person. Glasses are gone, freckles are no more and her curves are all in the right places now that the baby fat is gone.
Now comes the fun. Bram's "bug" is no longer the shy person he thought of as a sister. Megs has always loved Bram even though he is ten years her senior and now she wants to show him the woman she has become. Only problem is that there is another woman in Bram's life now. So even if his heart goes one way, he must follow the rules. I personally loved his strong personality. And Megs reminds me of myself. I soo wanted her to win the battles she faced after coming back. This is a fun book that teaches many lessons. You did it again Mrs. Lessman!! A devoted follower here!
