One Perfect Spring

Let me tell you all, this book is NOT to be missed I was hooked from page one. Emotional read!
Hannon told this story in such away you have the warmest heart after you read it.
She has such a way with words, I loved the whole adoption theme.
The twists and the surprises woven in this book are not to be missed.
You are in for a treat with this 5 star book. I recommend this book.

twisty and turny!

The characters in this book are wonderful because they are multilayered and evolve and grow throughout the story. In my opinion, the characters make a book worth reading just as much, if not more, than the plot. The characters are what move the story along.

The plot is also very important to a book, and this one had lots of twists and turns and surprises... but you were led to them so you thought you might know what's coming before it happened. The plot was great in this book.

The only thing I didn't like about this book is that I felt like the interactions between two of the supporting characters (David's daughter and son-in-law) might have been just a little too suggestive for a Christian novel. Had they been in a secular novel, they would have been entirely appropriate and expected, by I feel like Christian novels should have not just a higher standard, but the highest standard.

ONE PERFECT SPRING by Irene Hannon is an interesting Contemporary Fiction. Follow, single Mom, Claire Summers, Claire's eleven year old daughter, Haley, Dr. Chandler, who had a son, she gave up for adoption, when she was younger, and Keith Watson, a workaholic and an executive assistant to a philanthropic businessman on their journey of discovery,faith,love and a child's Birthday wish for another.

A letter from a little girl could change everything.

What an emotional tale of adoption, romance, love, faith, forgiveness, hope, and healing. Do, have a tissue or handkerchief at the ready, you will need it, I am sure, I did.

A very emotional but tenderhearted tale of hope, and love, with many twists and turns. I enjoyed ONE PERFECT SPRING. I usually read her Romantic Suspense stories, but I gotta say her Contemporary Romance is just as thrilling and emotional.

It will leave you speechless as well as warms your heart and soul. Well done!!

I had really mixed feelings about A Reluctant Courtship!

A Reluctant Courtship was a read about which I had really mixed feelings. After I finished the first chapter (which had me laughing and smiling), I thought it was going to be my favorite book of The Daughters of Bainbridge House series but, as I continued reading, my feelings kept flip-flopping and I was a little disappointed in the end.

I don't know how to express what it was exactly that didn't click with me, but I'll try my best. For one thing, the story seemed kind of redundant at times and there were times while reading this book that I found myself bored and wanting to just skim-read -- though towards the end, the story was very good and not boring at all! Hence, why I have such mixed feelings about A Reluctant Courtship -- parts of it were very good; others, not so much (in my opinion).

There were several things about A Reluctant Courtship that I liked. The characters were good and I really liked both Ashmoor and Honore. Their romance story was sweet. :) I didn't care all that much for Honore's brother, but I think that was the intention. I also liked the mystery/suspense aspect and how it was possible for the reader to guess who the culprit was - my guess was correct!

Overall, while not my favorite in the The Daughters of Bainbridge House series, A Reluctant Courtship was a nice one-time read. I'm glad I read it and definitely plan on reading more of Eakes' books.

A delightful book to read!

Honore Bainbridge is far from the high society lady she was groomed to be. She has been courted by a traitor and a murderer. Her family banishes her to their country estate hoping things will die down and she'll stay out of trouble. There she falls for tall handsome Lord Ashmoor, the perfect man for her! There's only one problem... he has been accused of helping prisoners escape from Dartmoor Prison. He needs a wife, one of high stature that would his increase his chances of being kept out of prison.

This is such a delightful book, I enjoyed every page! Honore is so darn likeable, she has a good heart but that doesn't help her reputation. Lord Ashmoor is charming and fun. I loved seeing how these two find a way to love each other.

This third book in the Daughters of Bainbridge House series from Laurie Alice Eakes begins with peril, something the heroine, Honore, is apparently used to. As any aspiring authoress is wont to do, she uses her near-fall and rescue by impossibly handsome, muscular neighbor, Meric, Lord Ashmoor, as a future scene in her Gothic novel.

This story that rounds up the three Bainbridge girls' romance in Regency England is written in the style of day; delightfully wordy with no apologies for lavish description, costume perils, food woes, and daily nitty-gritty. love and loss and a tissue box

This little book is a heartwarming love story and a heart wrenching tear jerker all rolled into one. Dale Evans Rogers shares the tale of little Robin, her Down Syndrome daughter who died at a very young age. The story is told from Robin's point of view, as if she is sitting on her heavenly father's knee relating what happened "down there." The heartache of a mother's loss, and the hope of a child's eternity are entwined in an unforgettable tale. I highly recommend this book to any one who has lost a young child, or has had to deal with special needs like Down Syndrome. Be sure to have a tissue box handy.

A story of family, humor, and faith

One word comes to mind when I think of Suzanne Woods Fisher’s books, and that is “life.” With the gentle, steady ebb and flow of Suzanne’s writing, we are pulled into the daily routine of an Amish community as its people simply “walk the walk” – experiencing life’s frustrations, indecisions, beauty and joy. Suzanne excels at character depth with an ensemble cast, and she has become a favorite almost without my realizing it had happened.

If you’re reading the Stoney Ridge stories in order, you will see that children from earlier series are now dealing with the responsibility of becoming young adults. I especially enjoy a sense of familiarity when characters from previous novels make occasional appearances.

The Quieting begins right where The Imposter left off, with David and Birdie playing key roles. The issue of the switching of lots has yet to be resolved. Another signature of Suzanne’s writing is the delightfully quirky, memorable characters she comes up with – all without pretense and totally relatable in their humanness. David’s niece, Abigail, is an unusual character that I grew to care for very much. She took everything that was said literally and was wide open in her honesty, sometimes unintentionally hurting people in the process. Having lived with criticism, she couldn’t handle kindness when it was freely given. And I loved the kind-hearted Dane who was gifted in caring for animals. “Dane was like a gust of wind blowing through an open window, somewhat oblivious to the effect he had on others.” Talk about opposites! I enjoyed the gentle unfolding of their romance.

David’s mom, nicknamed the “Mammi the Meddler,” comes for an extended visit and adds so much rich color to this story! “Mammi never used five words when she could use thirty.” Her life’s mission was “to make sure her eligible granddaughters were doing their part in God’s great plan. Marriage and motherhood, in that order.” If you’ve ever known anyone whose efforts were more unhelpful than helpful, then you get the picture.

Of all the spiritual gems woven throughout this story, I found two especially touching. One of my favorite descriptions of Christ, our Good Shepherd, is vividly reflected as Dane works with the sheep on his farm. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). And then there’s Birdie’s fascination for the great blue heron and her appreciation for all of God’s creation … “Nature was God’s first book.” Like David, I find myself discovering the outdoors in a new way through Birdie’s eyes.

Enough background is supplied so that The Quieting can stand alone, but I suggest reading the series in order for the best reading experience. Highly recommended.

Love the steady pace and developed characters

Once again I was swept away to the slow and steady pace of life in Stoney Ridge. The storylines from the first book in the series, The Imposter, continue as the minister David struggles with what to do about the bishop's unrepentant heart. The bishop's sister Birdy brings him peace and helps him see life in new perspectives. Katrina and Thelma implement a new source of income on their oil-rich land that has the potential to solve the church's financial problems. Jesse learns to stay out of trouble- for the most part- as he works to make his buggy shop a success. I thoroughly enjoyed the new characters who joined the community, David's mother and nieces who both help and make life difficult for members of David's family. His mother has his best interests at heart, but her disapproval turns his store upside down and disrupts his relationship with Birdy. So many times I just wanted him to stand up to her and shut down her meddling! He does his best in his own quiet way though.

Abigail's point of view was especially interesting since she views life so literally. She thrives on order and organization, and her quest to fill the mystery gap in the Glick family tree for Dane bring the two closer together. She doesn't quite know what to make of his happy personality and is surprised by his kindness toward her when she has endured criticism her entire life. Her mannerisms are funny and bring a subtle humor to the narrative. I loved her enthusiasm for genealogy and the idea that seeking out our ancestors helps us understand our roots and ourselves.

David's anxiety over following the Lord's will in resolving the problems of the church is compounded by pressure from his domineering mother. He wants so desperately to do what is right, but feels strongly that he must wait on God's prompting. The way he continually turns to scripture and prayer is inspiring and I loved the passages from the Bible he drew comfort from. The compelling drama from multiple points of view kept me enthralled and I can't wait to read the next book in the series, The Devoted, which will be released this October.

Not one but two books need to be read.

The Quieting by Suzanne Woods Fisher is such a outstanding book that needs to be read by all. You need to read first The Imposter or will be completely lost about what is going on when you read The Quieting.
This book has a lot of ups and downs an that makes the book even more special to all that read it. There is the know it all Bishop an his brother who think they can run the community the way that it benefits the way they think it should be. Then comes Katrina, David's oldest daughter, who was in love with her boyfriend of many years, he ended it with Katrina not knowing that what they had done was ending up with the birth of a child. Then two cousins show up saying that they heard that help was needed in David's family, David felt that things were going just fine in his family the only problem was the Bishop an his brother.
Things went off in several direction an before you knew it David's mom also showed up an the stress for everyone took over. David was falling in love even if he didn't know it at the time, until mom told him that she was going to find the right women for him.
So many things were going to happen coming up for David an his family an for the other members of the community so I am going to stop here because I want everyone to read the two books an enjoy them as much as I had when I read them, I even ended up in tears at one part because his Mom was trying to end a relationship that David was hopping to have.
I hope many people read these two great books an get as much as I have from reading them on how people need to spend time looking into their own families an problems before they talk about others. Also how it isn't right of anyone fixing it so they can become the Bishop an Ministers of the community an what will happen if they do this.
Please after you read an enjoy these two books take the time to make two different reviews on them an also ask that they tell others how great an what a joy they will get from reading an to pass it on so many others will get these books as well. An informative and supportive guide for those in need

I finally decided to invest in a book about emotional abuse after realizing that issues from a past "bad relationship" just weren't going to go away on their own. With its comforting words and frequent anecdotes,"Healing the Scars of Emotional Abuse" put many of my old experiences in perspective. I was able to see the "big picture" of how emotional abuse had permeated many aspects of my life, and I was finally able to acknowledge what a lasting effect it had on me. I was also surprised to see how many other people I recognized in the descriptions of emotional abusers and their techniques -- it was an eye-opener. If you have been the victim of emotional abuse (or aren't sure if you have been), you will find this book supportive, if you are an abuser you may find insight into why you abuse, and if you are just an interested reader you may be surprised by how this book changes your perspective on your co-workers, friends, and family. It really is fascinating.

This book is an excellent resource to help a person recognize the difference between criticism and emotional & verbal abuse. Criticism is normally given IN LOVE, there is an enormous difference between criticism & abuse. This book will also help anyone who was previously in an abusive relationship to be able to recognize some of the common traits all emotional abusers and potential emotional abusers exhibit and steer clear of another abusive relationship. I even found instances in my own life where I was the one doing the controlling through emotional abuse & have been able to discontinue that behavior through self examination & prayer. Excellent book!

Significantly healing just to read it.

So many of us have grown up in a society where, if abuse is even recognized, it is not considered really damaging unless it is physical or. God forbid, sexual. Not enough emphasis has been placed on how deeply wounding emotional abuse can be on an individual. Sure, the media has sometimes identified cases where severe bullying has wreaked havoc on adolescent development. I cannot think of a book, however, that is more comprehensive on the subject of emotional abuse than Healing the Scars of Emotional Abuse. I first saw the book for sale at an Army post exchange. Thumbing through it I later decided to purchase it through Amazon.com. I am really glad I did. It was most informative.
There are four parts in the book:
Part 1 concentrates on understanding emotional abuse from defining it to explaining why it is so common and informing the reader just how damaging it can be.
Part 2 describes types of emotional abuse identifying emotional abuse through words, actions, neglect and even a chapter entitled "Spiritual Abuse: The Bible as Bludgeon." Finding myself living in the Bible Belt of the United States I was naturally drawn to that chapter. I agreed with the author that religion should CONTRIBUTE to an individual's self esteem. The author admitted however that "unfortunately religious faith HAS been used as an abusive weapon in a relationship." This is perhaps the FIRST book I have ever read that dared to admit this. Indeed in my many years employed as a domestic violence social worker I had seen men feeling justified in emotionally, physically and/or sexually abusing their wives because they did not "submit" to them in the way they felt the Bible was directing them to do. This was so sad. God should be seen as a source of true love and enduring comfort not as a creul and punishing diety.
Part 3 describes the many effects of emotional abuse including the effects on sense of self, physical effects and effects on relationships.
Of course my favorite part was Part 4 describing how to overcome emotional abuse by first recognizing your abuse and its effects, getting over the past and living for the future and restoring your self. It was a great help to me in continuing my personal journey to overcome the effects of emotional abuse I endured as a child.
This is a most important book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has suffered abuse either in their family of origin, their husband or wife, partner or significant others.

Super sized advice

This book looks gorgeous and its effect on my daughter has been AMAZING! She loved "Dateable" (by Hayley) so this book was an easy purchase for me.

First off, this book is not for dealing with physical bullying, rather, for verbal meanness. This is not a book to help prevent (or even understand Columbine.) Hayley DiMarco tackles the all too common "everyday mean", mean that is just written off as being ingrained into the catty female culture. Hayley gives refreshing counter-culture advice, one that potentially makes peace and wins over enemies while teaching a valuable lesson that the world doesn't revolve around "me" and my "rights".

While a few people might have a pessimistic view of Hayley's out of mainstream methods (she discourages confrontations and the whole "how did that make you feel?" encounter and encourages girls to not take themselves so seriously and focus on higher things), I found the advice highly insightful coming from a woman who was scarred by mean girls in high school all the way through through corporate America. She talks about having all guy friends as a result and rediscovering how she had to "relearn" how to be friends with women.

The last thing you feel like after reading the book is that of a victim. This book gives plenty of practical advice for teen girls dealing with mean, and a bigger spiritual perspective to grow on.

Highly recommended for the teen girl in your life that is open to the concept that life is bigger than just her. If she needs the world to revolve around her, she's probably going to come up empty and still searching for someone else to blame after reading this book (unless she has an epiphany!)

Every teen girl should have a chance to read it. Some of the greatest spiritual figures in history have lived by a similar walk that how you treat people matters more than how they treat you. This message is lost on the cynical. My teen daughter read this book hoping to find help with her mean girl problem and discovered the ways she was encouraging or even being mean. The changes in her have been simply amazing! A must read!!

Good Book but a lot of repitition

Mean Girls by DiMarco has some great points to offer and she helps spell out what different kinds of mean look like. Unfortunately, she repeats a lot of the same information in different formats and the book becomes redundant. I have been using this book for a junior high small group and it became difficult to really get into any meat after the first 3-4 weeks. For an individual girl, I think it can be helpful to label the subtle ways girls can be mean and ways they can move beyond mean to live a life committed to God first. I appreciate the way she calls it what it is and challenges teens to raise the bar in how they are living. I think watching the movie, Mean Girls, adds more to the book, even though the two are unrelated. Overall, it is a decent book.

DiMarco tells it like it is!

This book is totally awesome! I sure do wish I had it when I was in high school. I was one who did the tormenting and was also on the flip side as well. DiMarco's style of standing up and being the bigger person - ignoring the bully - is exactly what's needed! You bully someone because it's fun, because it provokes a response. If it doesn't, you move on to something else.

Teaching teens to turn the other cheek is the best lesson one can learn these days. If we are truly striving to be like Jesus, why are we trying to get even, trying to tattle, or trying not to befriend those who aren't 'cool'. Man - I'm sure that Jesus doesn't think I'm the coolest person in the world when I'm not living at my best. But I'm glad He loves me and wants to be my best friend no matter what.

There are MANY valuable lessons to be learned through this book. Girls just need to be receptive to them and remember we are supposed to be Christlike in our behaviors - not like the world. And that's not always easy.
