I glanced out of the window, my sights falling on a black Dodge 4 x 4 complete with chrome, mud flaps, oversized running boards, and those big tires that looked as if they were made merely for recycling as multi-person flotation devices. Not unusual in Texas, but more than a little out of place in our neck of the woods. I held my breath as the door swung open and Dwayne Neeley stepped out.
"Whoa." My imagination hadn't done him justice.
Tall. Check.
Burly. Check.
Five o'clock shadow. Check.
I stopped checking after that, worried I might lose track of the reason for his visit. He drew a bit closer, and I took note of the fact that Sophia--who'd been sitting on our veranda next door--was now on her feet, giving him a solid once-over.
Watch yourself, girl.
As Dwayne ambled up the drive, the pointed toes of his boots moving in perfectly timed steps, my heart seemed to beat along in sync. After a few seconds of staring at his broad shoulders and rugged good looks, I sprinted to the front door, pausing only to double-check my appearance in the front-hall mirror before stepping out onto the veranda. Once there, I did my best to look calm and unassuming.
A smile lit my cowboy deejay's handsome face as he climbed the stairs to meet me on the porch. My, but the boy was tall.
"Dwayne Neeley?" I managed.
"The one and only."
He extended his right hand. I took it, but found it difficult to focus, because, now that we were within hand-shaking distance, something else stood out, something that totally threw me. His clothes were, well, dirty. And he had that same wet puppy smell Nick's boys always got when they'd been playing in the summer sun too long. And I was pretty sure he had--what was that, sawdust?--in his hair.

Funny!

This book was funny from the first page. I have never read a book with so much religion in it before, but that did not stop me from picking up this book. Just from reading the description on the back of the book, I knew that I had to read this. I love anything weddings, and a little bit of romance never hurts.
The book starts off with Bella's parents retiring from their wedding business. They have decided to give the business over to Bella, her first wedding is a boot scoot'n country wedding with cowboy boots as the centerpieces. There is only one problem, Bella is full blown Italian and her family has only ever done traditional weddings. But when Bella advertises that she is doing themed weddings she starts getting calls for some crazy weddings.
She meets DJ towards the beginning of the book when she hears a man talking about DJ on the phone, Bella thinks that this is a sign from God since she is looking for a deejay for the wedding she is planning. Get it, DJ is his name, she thinks he is a deejay. Let's just say that when DJ finds out that Bella wants him to be the DeeJay for the wedding, it turns into a very funny part of the book.
Bella's family is very close. They all live together, her Aunt, Uncle, Mom and Dad, and a couple siblings and are they funny! It reminds me of my family, there is always someone talking louder than someone else to be heard over everyone, and Holidays are even louder.
This is a must read for anyone who likes a little romance, and the love of family in a book.

A Light Hearted Fun Read

After reading all the glowing reviews here I had high hopes for this book. Perhaps too high!

First the good. As other reviewers have commented the Rossi family form a cast of lively, quirky and very funny laugh-out-loud characters. They swoop you up in one big embrace and carry you along the story as you flip the pages.

So why the three stars? Firstly, I found the book a little difficult to get into. I've owned if for over a year and after three failed attempts finally managed to crack my way past page 50. Personally, I think this was because I found those first fifty a little too much backstory, introspection and introductions and not enough action.

Secondly, I think I've realised I like my romances to have a few more obstacles. While trying not to spoil anything for future readers, if the feature romance had had a little more conflict and tension it would have definitely had me a bit more engaged. It was all just a little too easy and left me wishing they'd had to fight a little bit harder.

However, this is a lovely lighthearted read if that it what you're looking for.

I'm trying to finish this book, but yuck!

Okay, a few things first. One, I don't usually write book reviews. Two, I'm a Christian woman. Three, in my rant I may give away some parts of the book, so SPOILER ALERT! That being said, am I the only one that found this book ridiculous?? I've never seen God's Christian principles applied to such nonsense and in such an unbelievable way. Really?? Bella was ashamed that she did not believe a silly parrot could be "turned to the Lord"??? And don't get me started on how people got misty eyed over a dumb statue of liberty outfit... And praying over people that fainted makes it a miracle when they wake up??? Enough to throw yourself on the ground?? I'm so glad I got this for free, or I'd be too mad to think straight. As it is, I don't even care about how the story ends. But I'm pretty sure it will be a LAME end, just like pretty much the whole book. I can't even understand how this is rated so high by others...

Not for me...

Well…… here goes…..

I was very anxious to read a book from Julie Lessman. I’ve seen her all around the blogosphere for years now. I’ve liked her Facebook fan page. I know that she’s won numerous writing awards (all of which, I’m sure were rightfully given). This was the first book, I’ve attempted to read from this author but hopefully, not the last. Honestly, I could not finish this one. I got to just over the half-way mark on this book, but decided to give up on it. I love historical romances, so genre was not the issue here. I just could not like the characters. Could not relate to them. I felt the dialogue was forced between them at times and too childish at others. There were too many secondary characters that I could not keep up with either. I get that the author was trying to tie in from book one and eventually into book three of this series, but there was just too much to keep track of.

I’ve only seen the highest of ratings for this author and her books, so I will have to assume that on this one, it’s me. Somehow, this book hit a ‘bleh’ chord with me that I could not shake off. I will dare to read her books again and am happy to take recommendations on which one I should attempt next.

So…. sorry for the unhappy review, but I’ve got to tell it like it is. It happens to all of us, right???

I always knew Julie Lessman was a wonderful romance writer, but now I place her in the category of a brilliant and masterful storyteller as well. Although this novel made me laugh out loud more than once and was alot of fun, there was also a serious, heartbreaking side to it as well. For Ms. Lessman courageously and compassionately delves into the seedier side of life; of murder and corruption, young girls being forced into prostitution, and disease caused by poverty. I must say, the romantic tension in this one caused my heart to race erratically, and a plot twist in the romance between the heroine's mother, Caitlyn, and her Uncle Logan left me reaching for the tissues. One powerfully written novel of healing, forgiveness, and learning to trust again! Be sure to put this one at the top of your TBR list!

Sweetly Exciting and a keeper!

Wow, this is a first for me... being the first one to review a book on amazon. And I am so excited to do so....

To say I was thrilled when this book arrived early on my door step would not not be an exaggeration (Preordering on Amazon is awesome)! I couldn't wait to start reading it, knowing that I had a good read in my hands. Julie Lessman hasn't let me down and is a wonderful & talented writer. I do have to say that when I received her newsletter and read her statement "...this sweet and funny love story that I will warn you, is the sweetest, least passionate of all my books, which means there are very few kisses, but LOTS of romantic tension!", I was curious as to how this story would play out, but never fear it is absolutely delightful!

 Dare to Love Again is sweetly exciting and such a wonderful story! As usual there are great characters that just come to life and jump right off the pages and into your heart. Lessman is a pro at providing not only a hero and heroine that steal your heart but a whole cast of characters as well. For fans of Lessman's Daughters of Boston & Winds of Change Series this new series is sure to be a hit!

I really loved Allison and Nick's romance, that had at times tempers and tongues a flying (in smart and witty ways), a blossoming attraction and of course love soaring... Lessman kept it interesting! Logan and Cait's story continues to enthrall you, leaving you eagerly anticipating more. I read several hints at future books that have me excited and so ready to read their stories!

Bravo Lessman, another novel that's a keeper!

"Nobody Told Me" is a cross between Facebook and "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask." The book is a free-wheeling conversation among college students and teenagers about big hopes and painful memories. With God's Word as her compass, Pam Stenzel offers us a path for awesome relationships.

Personally, I love Pam's one-liners. Charles Dickens wrote, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." "Moby Dick" begins, "Call me Ishmael." Pam starts out bold and simple, "God wants you to have great sex." I dare you to find out where she goes from there.

Great for your teens!

What a unique book. The format is like facebook with an initial post and then comments from teens and those in their early 20's. The book is broken into subjects and the authors address each subject with sound biblical counsel and scriptures. I was very surprised as I thought this would be more of a bible study to be taught when in fact it is a book for teens. If you have a teenager this is a great book. I think all parents should invest in this. This book is filled with the things parents are all want to tell their teens or are telling their teens, but it comes from their peers. The real-life stories and questions are great and will make an impact on your teen. Within the pages of this book there may even be questions asked and answered that your teen won't ask you. It further impressed me that for most subjects there was a positive example from someone who had chosen God's way and an example of someone who did not choose God's way or did not know to choose God's way and how that has impacted their life and ultimately how God restored them after they admitted their sin. I highly recommend this book and am so impressed that Gospel Light took the initiative to print such a unique and helpful book in this format.

I don't hate the message

I don't hate the message, I've heard Pam speak and thought she was quite good. It's the format of the information that I can't stand. Rather than a smooth flow of ideas, the text is laid out like internet conversations which I find disjointed. I will try another of Stenzel's books sometime.

When a marriage reaches the point where the "D" word is tossed about like a hand grenade, it is hard to imagine that it can be saved, even though there are hundreds of books and programs that promise to do just that. The problem is that the efforts are usually one-sided; seldom do you see a couple in crisis calmly selecting a book on how to save their marriage. Yet, it has been Dr. David Clarke's experience that even the most hopeless of situations can be turned around with proper guidance and faith.

I DON'T WANT A DIVORCE is actually two guides in one. The first section is for couples who recognize that there are problems in their marriage and agree to work on them together. These problems can be a result of lost passion, arguments over children and finances that never get resolved, or some continuing sin. Dr. Clarke calls this "Dead Marriage Walking."

The second section is for those who have a spouse who is unwilling to change. Although the author refers to the unmovable "Stick" as the husband, it could just as easily be the wife. It is the partner who is content to maintain the status quo even though the status is miserable. Dr. Clarke writes: "Well, you married a Stick and now you're stuck." Yikes, not very compassionate there, Doc. But hold on. While Chapters 2 through 13 are loaded with wonderful ideas and exercises to help couples recover from a sickly marriage, it is in the latter chapters that the most difficult work gets done...when one of the partners is not willing to help.

Unlike many well-meaning Christian counselors, Dr. Clarke does not recommend that a woman married to a Stick stay stuck. He does not advise her to be submissive and to continue loving the Stick until he realizes the error of his ways and turns into a wonderful man of God. Instead, Dr. Clarke reveals the true nature of the Stick, and it is not pretty. The Stick can be emotionally abusive, selfish and a poor excuse for a father. And he will never change unless he has to.

Whether you are reading this book because you are married to a Stick or want to help someone who is, I DON'T WANT A DIVORCE will help you get to the very root of the problem and provide you with answers that you may never have thought of or been given by most Christian counselors. Direct and daring, Dr. Clarke clearly empowers the wife to wage the final battle for her marriage. He cites Biblical methods for confrontation and outlines the steps she needs to take. They are not easy steps, but unless the Stick has no redeeming qualities left in him, there are bound to be some changes from the status quo.

I DON'T WANT A DIVORCE is not the average "take two Scriptures and call me in the morning" Christian self-help guide. It is an exciting opportunity for those who have "tried everything" to get some real and lasting help.

As a (retired) marital therapist and husband of over 38 years, I view the content of this book as sound both psychologically and theologically. I agree with the author that even if the reader is not a Christian, he/she can benefit from applying the prinicples outlined throughout the book. My primary concern is that I wonder how many individuals and couples are spiritually and emtionally capable of navigating the prescribed exercises without the assitance of a therapist or discerning pastor. Also, I don't know what research supports this approach. In any event, this book provides a model for dealing with marital problems ranging from mild to severe. I parituclarly admire the author's stance on holding spouses who have commmitted "serious sins" which have severely impacted the marriage (e.g. adultery, addiction related behaviors) accountable in a highly structured way.

Many marital self-help books and marital therapy textbooks have exercises designed to enhance caring behaviors, conflict resolution skills, and so on. In comparison, I'd say the exercises in this book - some are better than others - are overall worthwhile. Most of the sample written exercises reflected emotional maturity and insight which I suspect few people exhbit in the midst of martial turmoil. If you're not able to work through the marital issues outlined by Dr. Clarke on your own, again, consider enlisting the aid of a competent helping professional who shares your values. In turn, that professional would likely be comfortable with the basic approach outlined in this book, though he/she may not choose to adhere strictly to the book's approach

worth every penny!!!

So I work at a local bookstore in my town. I came across this book and it was just after my husband came home drunk and physically abused me. My husband is a wonderful man and has never done anything like that before. And he's been doing everything possible to get the help he needs.
We weren't sure if we could save our marriage. So I was stocking the shelves and I saw this book. I figured what the heck, I'll check it out. I was desperate for answers to save our marriage.
This book is amazing. The authors writing is so modern, relaxed, and easy to get pulled in. After reading the first 5 pages, I literally thought, was this book written specifically about US!?!? They help with all different levels and situations. From intimacy issues in the bedroom and romance to abusers and critical cases.
My husband has decided to read it with me too. We're only a quarter way in and it's already helped us a LOT. It teaches a 12 week step by step guide to building the foundation to your marriage.
It has definitely been a useful tool in rebuilding the trust that was lost with his alcoholism. I would recommend it to anyone who is on a slippery slope with their spouse. It is addressed to both genders of the couple and even if you're just looking to make things between you even a LITTLE better, it helps with that too.
So glad I bought this book!!!

Interesting Read

Jade is the second book in the Shades of Style series. Lily Chau is an aspiring fashion designer struggling with the desire to succeed and family obligations. Lily is given a chance to appear on a reality TV show, The Next Design Diva, but debates with her friends on whether or not she should compete. Once she makes a decision to participate, she almost backs out when she runs into the mysterious and intriguing Doug LaCroix. The chemistry between the two is so thick that you could cut it with a pair of scissors. Doug has his own set of issues to deal with and is surprised by the immediate attraction to Lily. Lily and Doug's relationship is tested many times. Only when they both grow in their faith in God will they be able to look past each other's faults and follow their personal and professional destiny. Griffith has penned a tale that shows the importance of trusting God in all areas of your life.

Green is my second favorite color

Lily Chau is the next member in the Garments of Praise team that we get to meet. She's in her late thirties, taking care of her sick mother, trying to get her foot into the fashion industry and trying to figure out her relationship with her boyfriend. She gets invited to compete in a Project Runway-like reality show with the help of a famous designer. Little does she know that the designer is the mysterious stranger that she keeps running into and finding a growing attraction with. Lily has to decide how she will manage her mother, her fashion, her boyfriends, and her life.

This is one of the first Christian fiction novels where there is an Asian American female lead character. AND she happens to not be an immigrant or someone living in the 1800s . There aren't many Asian Americans portrayed without any sort of stereotypes in books in general so this was a welcome relief. I felt that Lily's character was very real. I understand her insistence of taking care of her mother. Family is very important in Asian culture. Like in Pink, I enjoyed seeing the going ons behind the fashion industry. And I also loved that while Lily is slightly bothered at being almost 40 and still not married, she's still managed to create a name for herself and not be bothered too much by it. I liked the contrast in Doug and Ken. Lily's mom's story with her dad was very moving and sad. The only thing I didn't get was when Lily and Doug first met. The way it was written, Doug looked like a homeless person and Lily falls head over heels for him like that. Now maybe I'm just being paranoid, but if I was alone on a street and a stranger looking like that came up to me, I'd be a little scared. Lily just seemed like she had let her guard down completely which is not a safe thing to do in a city at night.

I really enjoyed this book. The series is great as it focuses on different ethnicities. I'm really looking forward to reading Tangerine.

There are some cultures that sacrifice in ways, some will never understand. Then there are children that make sacrifices for their family because of a promise they made while young, even if it means their own happiness. Jade by Marilynn Griffith is book two of the Shades of Style series. Jade is the story about Lily Chau.

Lily is Chinese-American and as a young adult she made a promise to her mother to always take care of her and never leave her. Lily works for Garments of Praise, where her co-workers, her friends, see more in Lily than she sees in herself. Jean Guerra thought it would be good to enter Lily into the Next Design Diva reality show. Will she allow her promise to get in the way of her happiness in creating clothes?

Lily has been dating Ken, a doctor for two years, and she hoped and dreamed for him to one day propose, but that was her dream not his. With Lily's mother, Su, having dementia and what seem to be signs of Alzheimer's, he did not want her to live with them, but Lily would never put her mother into a home. She made a promise that she intended to keep. When he tells her that he just could not take on the struggles of her mother, Lily realizes maybe love is not for her and she is destined to be alone.

Doug LaCroix is the mentor placed with Lily for the Next Design Diva program. Doug is a doctor, a missionary and a designer that disappeared after 9/11. He renewed his faith in God and went to different places trying to help and make a difference. However, returning to his designing days was not part of what he had planned. Then he meets Lily and realizes that they have more in common than just clothing design. Can he handle the new feelings that are running through his body?

I recommend this book to a reader that does not realize in order to fulfill a promise, you sometime have to accomplish your dream in order to feel complete. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

It only took 2 days

While listening to Dr Leman being interviewed on radio, I heard him make a comment to a call-in that struck a chord with me. I couldn't wait to get the book, and as Dr Leman promised, I saved a bundle on counseling and became my own shrink. It only took 2 days! Monday and Tuesday, the chapters on personality and birth order, really increased my understanding of who I am and why I react as I do. By Wednesday I was feeling...well, new! Two years ago four major life crisis changes left me kinda stuck in a depressed mood. This book helped me get out of that, and, as a bonus, it was truly fun to read.

It works!!!!

lthough I had read and enjoyed books by Dr. Kevin Leman before, this one made the top of my list of titles to recommend by this well know psychologist, humorist, and worldwide known speaker.
I also have read lots of "makeover" books but this one hit the nail on the head for a short, concise look at oneself. Being over 70, I thought, maybe I didn't have issues to address but I was wrong, this book has something to say to everyone, no matter the age, martial status or health condition. He started the book with a short survey and that if one of the topics resonates it is for you, and then promises that this book will scratch where you itch.

Dr. Leman promises that you will be able to Accept yourself, Boost your confidence & Change your life in 5 days. On Monday, he had you discover your personality type, in a very humorous way. All of us match the personality of a breed of dog, a Yorkie, Great Dane, Standard Poodle and Irish Setter. The examples were fun and you could quickly pick yourself out. Then on Tuesday he continued the conversation by your Birth Order in your family. You may have recognized Dr. Leman as the author of many books on this subject alone. The pages have little post a note saying and important points at excellent locations to spur you on. He has tons of stories and examples that are interesting and illustrate his points right on. He follows this with an ! Chapter of Classics examples of famous people like Oprah, Jim Carrey, David Letterman and others to illustrate his points in a fun way.

Wednesday, Dr. Leman has us check out the Lies who have told ourselves with our memories, correct or not. There are some general memories each birth order person will have. I am a first born and sure enough I have a memory of depth, movement and height. I was amazed and intrigued. The rules your parents instilled in you, believe it or not can be changed, if you examine them and work through them.
Dr. Leman admits change is not easy but you are half way there in rediscovering yourself. Thursday we discover your Love Language, this is important whether you are single or married. How you accept gifts, find words of affirmation and view quality time are just examples. By now you have been on a short trip without the $225 session with a professional shrink and it is time to give yourself a break and lighten up. Dr. Leman uses Steve Martin and I love Lucy examples to show us how we might do this, and shows you how to set a new goal and weather the setbacks, all done in a funny, fun loving not preachy way. This book is just perfect for a "Total Makeover" I loved the book..

A bit simplistic

Having read quite a bit of Leman's books, I was a bit disappointed with this one.
His latest certainly isn't his best.

Much of the book's content we've heard before: "Determine that you can do it."
"Avoid self-defeating talk." "Be gentle with yourself when you fail."

These are all good suggestions, but it's nothing we haven't heard before in countless other books.

The chapter on birth order is excellent though and has several keen observations.
One being that Middleborns make excellent marriage partners. (71)

Another great section of the book deals with the four main types of parenting, and Leman expertly points out the difference between authoritarian parenting and authoritative parenting. I found this to be one of the best parts of the book.

The book's thesis is simply to identify your personality type, recognize your birth order, learn your love language (this chapter is virtually a recap of Gary Chapman's book THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES) and stop telling yourself lies.

Leman has a great sense of humor and is a best selling author. But the whole book is a bit too simplistic.. still worth reading though.

I'm moving to Summitt View

Things are as exciting as ever in Summitt View,CO where the ladies of the Potluck Club are concerned. The ladies and their friends and family are people I would really like to know. I would really enjoy being a member of the club and be in on the action. I have read all three of the books in the series and they are great. I think that anyone who enjoys a good story about "just folks" would love this book. It is so easy to feel a part of the story. Trust me, read the Potluck Club series and you, too, will want more stories about the ladies and their friends.

The girls are back in the third novel in the Potluck Club series. There's a wedding in the works in Summit View! But before anyone can say I do, the women seem to attract many adventures coming their way. Evie's worried about tying the knot while Goldie is trying to resist fixing her relationship. Vonnie's trying to get used to being a new mother while Lizzie's having all her family descend on her at once. Donna seems to have the whole world throw its problems at her feet while Lisa Leann just wants to make everyone know that she's there. These women are all connected through their friendship and being there for each other when they need it the most.

Another taste tempting pleaser! I really really love this series. I really like all the different POVs from the characters. You would read about an event from Evie's outlook and then change characters and find out that Donna didn't see things the same way. I really felt for Donna in this book. So much stuff happened to her that I wished she had more story time. She's my favorite character out of the group. Lisa Leann is still a touch character to like but she's gotten better as she's learned how to deal with the other women. Even Evie finds herself giving in to Lisa Leann's demands. The only character whose story I didn't find satisfying was Lizzie's. She has her whole family in her house including her mother who she doesn't get along with but nothing really comes out of it. I would have liked to read more about that relationship. I got a hoot out of Clay becoming transformed to impress Donna. I can't believed he even got a manicure. But the results were definitely worth it for him even though he didn't plan that specific outcome. Reading this book definitely puts you in a good mood. Have been a collector for over fifty years and this added to the collection bringing back more wonderful memories of such a fabulous dedicated couple who brought happiness into the homes of many Americans. Yes this book was a great addition to the collection
