A guidebook on the right way to find a mate

I first read this book in my early teens, before I'd ever done any real dating. I kept going back to it, both when someone of the opposite sex was interesting me, or when down about there being no one in the picture. She offers a lot of very practical sound advice as to how to go about dating in the right way. I also found it extremely valuable when I realized that I was single, out of college, and had NO prospects on the horizon. I was able to accept that I didn't need to worry about that. God would find me a spouse, so I didn't have to. And that's exactly what He did.
Some have suggested that her personal experience was too different from most people's to be applicable. To anyone with such a perspective, I would suggest that you are reading it all wrong! I don't think Elisabeth Elliot would suggest that everyone needs to have a Jim and Elisabeth duplication in their own lives before marrying. She offers principles that apply regardless of your personal circumstances.
A couple of very valuable highlights that stand out to me, years after getting married. Her chapter on "What can a kiss tell you?" was really right on. Physical communication is tempting, but actually, it shuts down the more important forms of communication for finding Mr. Right, and can actually give you a lot of regret.
I also valued the romance in Jim's perspective when he wrote to her, "I have you now unravished." He was grateful to look forward to the time when physical intimacy was right, and to leave something to look forward to! That is so completely romantic, and I think it is almost tragic that in today's society, that romance is almost unheard of. People take what isn't theirs don't relish the anticipation of getting it AT THE PROPER TIME. My husband and I went about it that way, and I found it very romantic, both the anticipation of the consumation of my marriage, as well as when that actually took place. I wouldn't have wanted to have cheated myself out of that beautiful memory!
Old fashioned? I suppose it is. Relevant and needed in this day and age? Absolutely. When you put your love life in God's hands, that is a safe place to leave it.

As relevant now as then

Until "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" hit the evangelical Christian scene, "Passion & Purity" was the de facto standard for dating and marriage. And while the former book has gathered more press, Elliot's is still as useful and has stood the test of time.
Having read some of the one and two star reviews here, I would simply say that virginity, making sure one's relationships are upright, asking serious questions about the worthiness of a potential mate, surrendering one's sexuality to God, dealing with loneliness, and knowing how to die to self daily are practices and beliefs that never go out of style.
Frankly, I believe this book has as much to offer as anything out there. That it is coming up on twenty years in the market does not diminish the power of the words contained inside. With the rampant promiscuity among young people, even those who claim the name of Christ, and the fallout that results in young lives because of a shattered soul given away in pieces to one sex partner after another, "Passion & Purity" still calls to all who will hear.
As for me, I heeded the words of the author as a young man and was able to hold on amidst the storm of sexual imagery and waning morality. This book was invaluable in that regard, helping me to see that I was not my own - I was bought with a price. How could I trample on that price?
Let me also say that after reading this book, I wrote Elisabeth Elliot and she wrote me a very kind and thoughful reply. If there is anything anochronistic about the author and her views, I will take her position any time. I mean, when was the last time an author personally responded to a letter you wrote? It just doesn't happen anymore.
If you are struggling with your sexuality, your dating life, and your desires for marriage, by all means read "Passion & Purity". It helped me. It can help you, as well.

Change your perspective on what is pure in dating

If you want to see a real example of a couple keeping themselves pure before God, this is an awesome book. Yes, she is a little dry but that is what is good about it. She isn't selling fluff that isn't what God is about. She tells a story of her courtship with Jim Elliot, an awesome man of God. I don't care what people say about "I kissed dating goodbye" being better they are wrong. God used this book to change my perspective on purity to be a Godly woman and to know how I conduct myself and not chase after relationships. To enjoy my role and to then encourage other women to stay pure until their wedding day and not pursue men. God used this woman tremendously in my life and the lives of the other ladies in a single women's study to understand what God wanted from us as women. I married a year ago and our first kiss, EVER, was when the pastor said you may now kiss your bride and I am so glad she was obedient to write this book. Buy extra copies you'll need them for your kids.

Great Read For Teens And Adults

Young and mature readers alike will enjoy the story “My Amish Boyfriend”. While the book may be geared for teens and young adults, older readers will find Melody Carson’s depiction of the Amish life to be informative and interesting. The story of a young girl living with a mother who was ill, speaks to the struggles a young person may have living in such a situation. Carson allows the reader to see the conflicted emotions young Shannon faces as she wishes to “enjoy teen adventures”, but must take responsibility and move with her mother to her grandparent’s home. Having never heard of her mother’s family, let alone, having met her maternal relatives, Shannon is surprised to find herself, along with her mother at the Amish community where her mother had been shunned for leaving to live in the “English” world. Shannon becomes intrigued with the culture and traditions, not to mention a handsome young Amish man. The story displays both Amish and English similarities and differences in beliefs and practices and paints a picture of what it might be life to live in a community separated from modern-day conveniences. My Amish Boyfriend is not just for teens!

This book was a fast read because it was hard to put down. Melody Carlson writes a wonderfully fascinating glimpse into the Amish life style. The book is written aimed at teens but as an adult I found myself totally riveted. Young Shannon has a lot of decisions to consider as her heart gets tugged in an unexpected direction. Meanwhile, her mom is facing some serious medical issues, as well as unresolved emotional family problems. Well written and totally satisfying, I would recommend this book to all!

A quick, delightful read that will likely please Amish fiction readers and Melody Carlson fans

Sixteen-year-old Shannon McNamara has had to grow up quickly. Her father died several years ago, and, with a little help from her neighbor, Mrs. Wimple, she has had to become a caregiver to her mother, who has recently taken ill to what the doctor has diagnosed as a temporary vertigo-type issue. This medical condition has Shannon’s mother constantly medicated and “out of it,” to the point of becoming addicted to Diazepam. Regardless of her extraordinary responsibilities, Shannon is a typical teenager, and when she steps off the bus on the last day of school, she has a three-step plan in place for her summer vacation: Get a job, get her driver’s license, and get a tattoo.

But that plan is tossed out the window when she learns that Mrs. Wimple will be leaving town for a few weeks and won’t be able to continue caring for Shannon’s mom. So arrangements have been made for them to stay with her mom’s family in Ohio for the summer --- a family Shannon didn’t even know existed.

Three-step plan on hold, Shannon and her mother board a bus bound for the country. When they arrive, another surprise is in store: her newly discovered relatives are Amish. Shannon’s mother apparently left the Amish faith years ago and has been all but shunned by her family and the whole community.

They move in with her grandmother (Mammi) and grandfather (Dawdi), where, despite having to sleep on the hard floor in the room she shares with her mother, Shannon is enchanted with the Amish lifestyle. But it’s not long before she realizes just how much work is involved and is left physically and mentally exhausted. She also realizes how much she misses the conveniences she’s grown accustomed to in her life as an “Englischer.” Just when she wonders how much more she can take, Shannon meets hot young Amish neighbor Ezra Troyer. In an instant, all of her reservations disappear, replaced with serious teenage infatuation and consideration of abandoning her former life to “become Amish.”

When her grandmother suggests that she move in with her uncle’s family, Shannon resists, not wanting to leave her mother. But her grandmother insists she can more than take care of her own daughter, so Shannon finally agrees. Besides, Uncle Ben and Aunt Katrina have more room to accommodate her (along with a real bed!). Shannon quickly connects with her 17-year-old cousin, Rachel, and starts learning all about the Amish faith. But she also learns something unexpected that puts her relationship with new love Ezra in question.

Melody Carlson is one of the most prolific Christian authors on shelves today and is well-known for her teen novels. MY AMISH BOYFRIEND is her third teen Amish fiction title in three years. As with all of her books, Carlson offers a nicely crafted plot and small-town charm. The characters are interesting enough, and I like the fact that Shannon is mature beyond her years. Her dedication to her mother’s care is admirable, as she is forced into a “role reversal” of sorts, where Shannon is the “mother” and her mom is the child. Shannon even goes so far as to get her mother to eat by withholding her Diazepam until her food is gone. What mother hasn’t resorted to some sort of bribery like this with her kids? But while it’s clear how much Shannon loves her mom, she is also a typical teenage girl with romanticized notions of life and love, and that is portrayed nicely as well.

There could have been a bit more emotional and motivational explanation regarding why her mother left the Amish community. It might have been nice for readers to see more depth in the relationship between Shannon’s mother and grandparents, or at least some sort of happy and satisfying resolution. However, it was only implied rather than shown. But then, the story is Shannon’s, whose growth is certainly evident by the final page.

MY AMISH BOYFRIEND, though written for teens, can also be enjoyed by adults. It’s a quick, delightful read that will likely please Amish fiction readers and Melody Carlson fans.

Very Helpful

This book is great for many first time parents. It's hard to believe that children can be a threat to a marriage but it's true. I's not so much that children cause problems but they create situations where choices have to be made. When couples disagree on the choices it can lead to cracks in the relationship. In this book, Harley gives a roadmap to the land mines of the early childhood years. I would recommend this book to anyone contemplating having children. Many of the concepts in the book are covered in the original His Needs Her Needs book which is excellent for engaged and newly married couples. It would be best to familiarize yourself with the basic needs before delving into this book.

I found myself shaking my head, yes yes yes through Emily's book. It's fresh. It's needed. It's purposeful. It rekindles the inner artist in all of us --- children of our Creative Father. It's long overdue. I pray this book goes far and wide for the glory of God and the saving of souls! I will be returning to 'A Million LIttle Ways' again and again. God-prints all over this. Only. Is the art in you alive?

This weekend I soaked in Emily P. Freeman’s A Million Little Ways: Uncover the Art You Were Made to Live.

I had eagerly signed up to review this book. However, once it arrived, I approached the content warily, thinking I’d find it filled with popular advice about how to find your voice and make it heard and rise above the crowd . . . you know, the things people who get paid for their art tell the rest of us.

But Emily’s insightful take on art encompasses all expressions of God’s beauty and includes all of us who bear His image.
Here’s one of my favorite parts . . .

“The song lyric.
The exchange between actors on the screen.
The image of Paris in the snow.
The tuning of the strings before the show.

Art coming from honest hands shows us beauty, stirs up longing, and touches us deeply.

But what about this:

The extra care the cashier takes with your order,
The way she looks you in the eye,
Asks how you are,
If you need help or a price check,
As if her work is important
And she knows it.

Or . . .

The teacher who makes history come alive,
Telling stories filled with facts and truth and background,
While students learn without even realizing.

MY TAKE: Emily’s words resonated with me. An image that lingers is her description of showing up at the church nursery to find a violinist—a talented professional musician—playing for the toddlers. As the man passionately poured out his music, the kids continued playing, seemingly oblivious to his song.

Yet his efforts were not a waste—no matter the reception of the audience.

Wonderful devotional and planner

I bought this book when I was planning my wedding and recently purchased it for a friend who is getting married. I was looking for a Christian devotional for brides or a wedding planner that focused on faith and not just the details of planning and this handbook was perfect. Amy Tol offers wonderful planning advice and ideas and the devotions were just what I needed. The devotions are based on different characteristics that a bride should possess and they bookend the chapters. I tried to read one devotion or planning section a day and had to stop myself from rushing through it because it was such an enjoyable and helpful read. I highly recommend this book and it makes a wonderful gift for someone newly engaged!

Great book for brides to keep focused on what is really important

I was recommended this book by another bride and I would highly recommend it. I wanted to get it because I felt like my mind was getting too preoccupied with planning and logistics while forgetting God and the spiritual aspect to a wedding and marriage. I have been reading 1 chapter a week. Each chapter includes a reflection taken from a Bible passage and a section that gives practical advice for wedding planning. I like the balance of both. I plan to give mine away after my wedding to a newly engaged friend!

I would recommend this product to every christina bride. I've just begun using it as I plan my own wedding and the little stories, tips, and advice to make this process a good one is wonderful. I LOVE THE BIBLE VERSES and how this book can really help you beyond just planning one special wedding but even after for beginning the marriage. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!

And in the midst of the chaos, can she keep herself from falling in love with her rescuer all over again?

Bailey starts off in Mexico where the bad guys try to kill her. She escapes with Maria back to Logan Point and the bad guys try to kill both her and Maria there. I am not going to give the identities of the bad guys away but get ready I don’t think you will be able to figure it out. If you are in the mood for some crime solving, lots of danger, really diabolical villains, romance, and plenty of fun trying to figure out the criminal mastermind then you have come to the right place. “Silence in the Dark” is a thriller, no doubt about it. Just when you think you might know where the story is heading Ms. Bradley tosses in another turn which you take at high-speed on two wheels. Ms. Bradley makes her Bailey and Danny so real and you root for them to complete their mission and you root for their romance to blossom. Ms. Bradley knows how to tell a story that keeps you flipping the pages and guessing as to who the bad guy really is. This is a wild ride read. I am sorry to see this series end but I am looking forward to the next offering from this highly talented author.

I always enjoy a good Christian suspense novel

I always enjoy a good Christian suspense novel, so I was excited to have a chance to read Silence In The Dark by Patricia Bradley. I'd never heard of Patricia Bradley before, and I saw that the Logan Point novels were her first series. I hadn't read the first three books in the series (Shadows of the Past, A Promise to Protect, and Gone Without a Trace), but it seems like while these novels do revolve around one town and have overlapping characters, each one focuses on a different main character so can function fairly well as a standalone novel as well. The back cover reads:

Silence In The Dark starts off with a prologue that is a flashback to Bailey's childhood. Then we are brought to the present day in Mexico where Bailey is working as a missionary in Mexico. We are quickly drawn into a story of intrigue and mystery as Bailey goes on the run with her friend's daughter and teams up with her ex fiance to keep her safe. The book had a bit of a slow start for me, but once it got going I had trouble putting it down. I really liked this book a lot, and Patricia has a fast-paced writing style. I am rating this one 4 stars instead of 5, though, because I did find the story a bit confusing at times, and it dragged in a couple of parts. I had trouble keeping some of the characters straight. I also couldn't figure out how the prologue had anything to do with the rest of the book (hint: it really didn't). However, that may be due to the fact that I hadn't read the first three books already. Despite that, I really enjoyed this book and plan to read the first three books now and also any future books in the Logan Point series. It ended in a way that leaves it open for the story to continue, so I do hope she writes another book about these characters. I recommend this series for anyone who enjoys Christian suspense.

Revisit Bradley's Logan's Point

Bailey Adams felt called to mission work in Mexico two years ago and broke off her engagement to Danny Maxwell to pursue that call. When Danny travels to Mexico to investigate illegal gun sales from a source at Maxwell Industries to someone in Mexico, he is stunned to find Bailey in the company of his main suspect.
Bailey is preparing to go stateside, taking 4-year-old Maria to visit her grandparents in the US. Joel McDermott is Maria’s uncle and as a good friend is taking them to the airport. After encountering Danny at the restaurant, Bailey takes Maria to the restroom as they prepare to leave. While there, she hears gunfire in the restaurant and, taking Maria, attempts to flee. Instead, the restaurant’s waitress, Sonja, hides them. Once the danger has left the restaurant, Bailey takes Maria and runs, straight into Danny’s arms.
Danny isn’t sure what the connection is between Bailey and the Calatrava cartel but he knows her well enough to know that if they are after her, it’s because of something she knows, not something illegal she’s done. As Danny tries to protect Bailey and her young charge, he receives help from “The Angel of the Streets”. Angel Guerrera has Danny’s back often and connects with little Maria like no one else has been able to do. Can Danny and Angel stay one step ahead of the cartel that seems intent on kidnapping Maria and killing Bailey? Will Bailey realize that trusting Danny will keep her alive?
Silence in the Dark is book 4 in Patricia Bradley’s Logan Point series. I enjoyed “catching up” with characters from some of the previous books in the series but reading the others isn’t required to enjoy this one. Bailey’s back-story is a hard one but it makes her distrust of men understandable. She is strong, self-sufficient, and a mighty warrior for God in an area of Mexico ruled by superstition and drug runners. Unfortunately, all she sees is the little girl who ran when her best friends were murdered and who ran once again when Danny’s love promised happiness (which she didn’t feel she deserved.)
I definitely recommend this book to lovers of romantic suspense. Bradley does it well. With themes of letting go of the past, trusting the trustworthy and following God’s direction - even when it contradicts everything you thought He told you before - this book has a depth that speaks to the hurting and encourages the lost to try God again.

Sometimes Angels come in the strangest packages!

When I found out that Roy and Dale Evans had so much heartache in their marriage and child rearing, I was most anxious to read this book, Angel Unawares. I first read the book immediately after I had found out that I too was the Mom of a very special little girl, so this book as told by Dale was a great source of strength and encouragement to me. I would certainly hope every new parent of a special child could have this book for reference. It really helped me! Not only did I realize that challenges face movie stars as well as common folks, but I realized that I certainly was not alone and this book was a real spiritual and emotional blessing to me!

Touched my life in a very special way....

I received this book for my 10th birthday from my parents, many years ago. At the time, I was very impressionable and this book made a significant impact on my life. I learned then that what we as fallible humans consider to be "imperfect" according to our standards of ignorance and bias is usually the most precious of all things to God.
Now, I have a two-year-old son with Down Syndrome and I can relate in so many ways to this book. As I look back over my life and various correlating events that have taken place, I see that God was preparing me to be the mother of a special needs child all along. And it all started with this one little book.
