Shocked that I Loved a Dog Book!

I own a dog. She’s a sweet, 45-pound mutt with a heart to please, and she’s sort of growing on me. But really, I don’t like dogs. So when I tell you that Surviving Henry was one of the funniest, sweetest, most poignant books I’ve ever read, you should know I started with an attitude of, meh, just another dog book.
Indeed, this is not just another dog book.
You wouldn’t believe the scrapes this lunatic dogs gets himself (and his poor owner) into. The stories will make you laugh out loud and wince in sympathetic pain, all at the same time. But it’s the lessons Henry teaches his family that make this book stand out. I don’t like dogs, but I loved Surviving Henry.
Full disclosure: I was asked to review this book. (Why else would a cat lover pick up a book with a dog on the cover?) Another disclosure: I read it in three days—sometimes aloud to my amused family. I give this book my highest recommendation.

Ya gotta love Henry

Be prepared to laugh out loud when you read Erin Taylor Young's "Surviving Henry." Also, to groan for Erin and her family -- and be glad that Henry is not your dog! I love dogs and all God's creatures -- but Henry would be a trial to the most dedicated dog lover. Here is a quote:
"Does anyone else think it's a bad sign when, on your puppy's first visit to PetSmart, flabbergasted bystanders mention the words obedience school?" Erin's description of young Henry challenging what she describes as "apparently an Irish wolfhound/Clydesdate cross" is priceless.
Let's face it. Some animals are more loveable than others. I admit that. Reading Erin's hilarious account about this independent, fearless, but charming boxer pup -- who became the biggest challenge of the Young families' lives, was a pleasure. It is likely more of a delight to read -- much more -- than to live it! I learned things about training difficult dogs in reading this book which I hope I never have to use. Henry certainly gave Erin plenty of escapades to fill a book!
Erin's often self deprecating but very sharp wit and her adept use of the English language makes this book enchanting to read. As an author, I love good writing! You will find yourself admiring Erin's perseverance in loving and attempting to train Henry (emphasis on "attempting"). She is either insane or admirable. Read to the end and you'll know which way to vote.
I heartily recommend this book to everyone who loves animals and a good laugh. Erin's Christian worldview also enhances Henry's story -- as Surviving Henry is a demonstration of faith, love, perseverance, and humility. This great dog brought out the worst and best in Erin -- as only a willful, inventive, totally unpredictable bundle of joy can do. I identified with much of her experience! I believe you will, too.

FUNNIEST BOOK I EVER READ!

Fond memories of her perfectly behaved childhood boxer, spurns Erin Young to purchase a boxer puppy for their family. He has charisma, is a fantastic example of the boxer breed, and turns everyone’s head with his stunning good looks. The Young’s are sure they have the perfect pet. It didn’t take long for them to realize Henry was anything but perfect!
His antics are off the charts! From endangering his life more than once with his exploits, to barely passing obedience school, along with many other crazy hijinks, he puts his owners through. There is never a dull moment with Henry. In fact someone has to watch him at all times to keep him out of trouble! There is no doubt he has an extreme case of doggie ADHD!
This is hands down the BEST book about a dog I have ever read! Ms. Young is an artist and comedian with words. I have never laughed so hard in such a long time! I was reading it while waiting in the doctor’s office and kept bursting out laughing.
The author’s sense of humor is impeccable. The book is so well written. I couldn’t put it down!
It is also the story of the deep, committed love of a family for their “fur baby”. Their devotion in caring for him, in spite of his challenging and eccentric behavior was very touching. Most people would have just given up and taken him to a shelter but they love Henry for who he is mishaps and all. Through her dealings with Henry, Ms. Young begins to realize the unconditional love God has for her.
I enjoyed this book so much I am going to read it again! If I could I would give it a 10 star rating! This book is a MUST read!
