The first book in Harris’ Southern Crimes series introduces Avery North, widowed mother and Atlanta police detective, who comes from a family steeped in police work. Her father and late brother were both officers. As the story begins, she is called in on a case on her day off when a Jane Doe is found with a magnolia tattoo that matches the one found on an earlier victim. Both victims were young Asian women in their teens. It looks like the work of a serial killer. At the scene she sees that the medical examiner assigned to the case is Jackson Bryant, who she has dated a few times and who escorted her to her father’s retirement party. Good police work and forensic detecting lead them to the identity of the second victim and from there into a labyrinth of international criminal activity. I doubt I will read the next book in the series

Revell Publishers graciously supplied me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really, really wanted to like this book. The synopsis had me hooked and I was in the mood for a good mystery. While Harris delivered on the religious aspect of this novel, the mystery aspect fell a little short for me. I found it hard to get into this book and found it all to be a little too slow for my liking. Even in the most suspenseful of scenes I was never wound up, and I never feared for the characters (though I was very shocked by an unexpected death). The author didn't completely place me in the scenes; I wasn't quite immersed in the story. The story did pick up speed around the halfway mark, and from there I got into it a bit more.

From the synopsis I have to say that I expected a decent amount of romance (suspense and romance, just how I like it!), but Jackson and Avery don't spend an awful lot of time together, and the chemistry between them just didn't work for me. On the upside, the supporting characters are really interesting. I like Avery's father, daughter and partner, and her mother's decline following her brother's death is a brilliantly handled sub-plot, which I assume will be dealt with more in the next book in the series. While Avery's serial killer case is wrapped up, she got no closer to finding the truth about her brother's death, which I also assume will be explored further in the next book.

I would have liked more focus on the intricacies of detective work, and I would have liked Avery to be just a bit more solid in her cop instincts. For instance, knowing a possible serial killer is toying with her, Avery wakes one night from a noise. She suspects someone is in her house. What does she do? She turns on her bedside light! My father used to be a cop, and one of the first things he ever taught me is that if you suspect someone is in the house at night, you never turn on the light. In your own home, darkness can be your greatest advantage. You know every nook and cranny in your home, and you can dictate the situation if you have that upper hand; whereas if you turn on the light, they can see you but you can't see them - this scene unfortunately made me question Avery's competence as a cop. Also, Avery dropped evidence. While I understand that scene shows a certain level of vulnerability in her, I would have liked Avery's cop instincts to be more solid. I do like the way Harris portrayed Avery's struggle to balance all of the aspects of her life, her concerns being a single mother and her hesitation to get romantically involved following her husband's death.

What Harris did manage to capture very vividly is the harsh realities of human trafficking. Personally, while I knew human trafficking still occurred, I had no idea that it is the second largest illegal and profitable enterprise in the world! Full of Twists!

Oh wow! I read another of Lisa's books several years ago and was so excited when I found out she had a new book coming out this year. And let me tell you ... it was amazing!

Dangerous Passages features Atlanta dective, Avery North. She's a widowed mother raising a pre-teen daughter, in a new dating relationship with medical examiner Jackson Bryant, an anchor for her extended family, investigating her brother's death. And on top of all of that, she's trying to solve the murder cases of two Jane Does. This story becomes more and more complex. However, I never felt lost or confused. Instead, the author crafted an intricate story, adding layer upon layer to keep me guessing as to what would happen next. I realized early on that there was much more to these two murders than met the eye, but it wasn't until the very end that I fully understood everything. Definitely the mark of a great story-teller!

I also enjoyed that while this book is definitely a romantic suspense, the two are balanced well. I never felt that one outweighed the other or stole the show, so to speak. Of course, Jackson is definitely worthy of his status as the hero of this story and I loved how he "forced" Avery to let him take care of her sometimes. I also liked the unique fact that they were already somewhat involved prior to the book. It just made for an interesting twist, and it seemed that we got to see more of the development of their relationship--rather than just the beginning.

I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in this series! Highly recommend! [4.5 stars]

I especially enjoyed the last 100 or so pages

Dangerous Passage is the first book I've read by Lisa Harris and, while I didn't enjoy it as much as I had anticipated, I did like the book as a whole and really enjoyed the last third.

I liked the characters and it was nice how Avery and Jackson were already dating, so it didn't seem like an insta-romance. There were some surprises in Dangerous Passage, and I was particularly surprised by one thing but, to avoid spoilers, I won't say what it was.

The only real negative I had was that the story seemed a little slow at times. I could easily put the book down and not feel a desire to continue reading.

Still, Dangerous Passage was a good read and I especially enjoyed the last 100 or so pages. I don't think it's a book I'll reread, but I do plan on reading the next book in this series. If you enjoy romantic suspense, you might also like Dangerous Passage.

Very Funny Book

I read this book at a time when laughter was rare and it seemed that the light at the end of the tunnel was turned off. Karen Linamen certainly has a sense of humor that was much needed. She tackled some serious issues such as the inner conflict that we face on a daily basis. Overall, I found her writing to be very witty but nothing new in regards to living that fabulous life. Yet her spin on it makes the read a quick and happy one.

Lighthearted and Uplifting

In her book "Due to Rising Energy Costs, the Light at the End of Tunnel Has Been Turned Off", Karen Scalf Linamen manages to address some very serious issues in a fun, lighthearted manner. Being a huge Linamen fan, I had been wanting to read this book but had not yet purchased it when my mom gave me her copy to read. At the time she gave me the book, I had no idea how much I was going to need it in the very near future. But as with every Linamen book I've read, I laughed my way through the tears that fell as I related to the circumstances detailed within.

To summarize this book, I'll quote a short excerpt from the last chapter. "I don't know about you, but I want to live above--not under--the rocks in my life. I want to stop letting painful stuff in my life smash me down or hold me under, and start letting it take me forward. After all, the same slab of granite can be a millstone, tombstone, or a stepping-stone. It can crush, signal the end, or create a path. I'm voting for the path."

The subject matter is deep enough that one chapter gives the reader plenty to meditate on. However, the catchy (and hilarious) chapter titles make it nearly impossible to put the book down. Her witty chapter discussing the positive traits of MacGyver had me nodding my head and saying, "Yes, I remember that episode" and "Wow! I never thought about it like that."

By the end of the book, I was refreshed, re-energized and ready to face the gloomy circumstances that surrounded me. While Linamen didn't extol on any new means of finding joy and peace I hadn't known before, her words served as a reminder that Jesus is the source of my song. My circumstances do not dictate my attitude. It's up to me how I use the slabs of granite in my life, and I choose to create stepping stones.

The author is excellent, but I do have a few suggestions. The second book is very repetitious of the parts on Patsy from Book 1. Yes, it makes it a stand alone book, but it diminishes the readability for the series reader. The author also creates a desire to follow characters and then leaves them hanging. In Book 1 the story ends with Kim and Steven somewhat engaged, but with numerous problems fcing them. Then in Book 2 supposedly these are handled in a statement about Kimberly Granger's pregnancy, but no hint at the resolution of the existing problems. Patsy's children, Greg and Pam are evidently killed in a boating incident, but again no details and after using Patsy's mental illness, no hint of how she deals with this. I would have liked to see Patsy reenter her homw and how she dealt with that following her breakthrough in Cedar Key. I liked exceedingly what I read, but was frustrated by what I did not.

I am sorry. This is not my type of book. If you have experienced abuse even for a friend, this book would be difficult. I just wanted to finish the book, and I did not like the route the book took as the second book in the series.

No other rating would do it justice. This was a page Turner at it's best. You felt like you were living it with Pats as her husband lovingly called her. Happiness and sadness all wrapped up together.

Griffith's latest African-American Christian women's fiction novel is crippled by a confusing structure and a reliance on too many miraculous coincidences.. Her boss and friend Chenille introduces her to Flex, a hot, eligible guy from church. As Flex and Raya's romance blooms, Chenille is thrown into her own turmoil, first losing a baby and then learning that her husband has cancer. To make matters even more complicated, Raya has just been hired to design a wedding gown for an ex-friend whom she can't stand. And over everything hangs the shadow of HIV: a minor character is orphaned by AIDS, and Raya's unfaithful parents turn out to be at risk for the disease too. (An author's note at the end of the book urges readers to pray for people with AIDS and points out that the disease disproportionately strikes black women.) Predictably, by the novel's end, Raya has learned about reconciliation and forgiveness, and her faith has deepened. Snappy dialogue partially redeems this generally disappointing story.

When she relocated to New York City, Raya hoped to turn over a new leaf and leave the old things behind. She is on a quest to reinvent herself and prove everyone that she is an independent person who could take the world by storm. Flex is someone who is trying to sprint away from his past. He is an iconoclast trying to break free from the overbearing demands of his father and while also trying to walk the Christian walk but is tormented daily by the sins of the world. When fate sets Flex and Raya on a collision course, what will happen as they constantly cross paths?

Aryanna "Raya" Joseph is a cutting edge designer who is working under her potential at her friend's uniform design business. Raya is striving to manifest her independence from her seemingly domineering, filthy rich father who would like to see her do other things with her life. To him, money is everything and he sacrificed his personal, nurturing relationship with Raya to pursue his financial conquests. Raya on the other hand, wears her heart on her sleeve and will give away her last dime to help someone in need. Having loved and lost, Raya is on a soul-searching mission and is questioning everything she once knew, including God's love for her.

Fletcher "Flex" Dunham Longhurst III is three times phine. With an old soul, his dashing looks and no-nonsense approach, the ladies love this personal trainer. Ms. Griffith does a fine job in describing the characters and their feelings by using vivid imagery to weave a tale of truly romantic suspense. This book flows nicely to relate a warm and engaging tale.

Refreshing!

Pink was a refreshing read! It's rare to find a book where the physical attraction between two characters is written in a way that is both realistic and honoring to Christ.

Raya and Flex come from similar backgrounds. However, since they are both running from their parents and their past, it takes them a while to realize how similar they are. They are immediately attracted to each other when they first meet on the subway. But mistakes both have made in their past make it difficult for them to see that this attraction, and the deeper feelings that come from it, is something that God has directed and not something that He frowns on.

Marilynn has written some astounding characters. Not just the main characters of Raya and Flex, but the friends and family that support them are also amazingly real. These are people who have made mistakes, in some cases many mistakes, but to whom God is still showing His redemption and grace.

I will be first in line to read any future books from Marilynn Griffith!

The main characters, Raya and Flex, struggle with building an honest relationship since they both seem to be hiding secrets from one another. Their romantic journey to love will leave you panting for more as the flames ignite between this fine-looking couple. With Raya's flair for designing clothes and Flex's talent for sculpting hard bodies, they score with a winning combination of fashion and fitness. Read This Book Again and Again!

When Coach Wooden passed away last year I read about the card he kept in his pocket listing the 7 principles his father taught him. I was intrigued. I copied the list and carried it around but I felt something was missing--I wanted to know more about these principles and how to live them in my life.

I was pleasantly surprised and happy to find that Pat Williams has written exactly the book I wanted. I've read his work in the past and knew he was the perfect person to really get at the heart of these principles. Mr. Williams is an innate storyteller and has the kind of curiosity that allows him to ask all the right questions. He interviewed many people close to Wooden to fully understand the man who gave Coach Wooden the principles--his father, Joshua Hugh Wooden. When you know the story you'll see how important these principles become because of how the coach's father lived them.

The book then goes through each principle in detail and gives helpful tips on implementing them daily. It's so useful in this respect that it will probably be always on my desk and not on the shelf!

On the whole, I highly recommend this book. And don't worry--even though Coach Wooden coached basketball and Pat Williams is senior Vice President of the NBA team the Orlando Magic, this book is not about basketball. It's about life.

Great tribute

I've read more than one of Pat William's books, and I'm never disappointed. This latest, a tribute to Coach John Wooden is no exception. It's full of anecdotes from former players, coaches, and friends of the late UCLA legend.

But in reality, this book is a tribute to Coach Wooden's father. On virtually every page Williams relates how the coach would talk about his father and how he wanted to be the kind of person his Dad was. Coach Wooden learned 7 principles that shaped his life..all from his father.

A moving and inspirational read, highly recommended!

WOW--What a MAN.

Having such a great relationship with my father, this book really puts in perspective how importnat it is to take with you the knowledege that you learn form fathers/mothers growing up as a child. I could tell by the book that this man and his father had the relationship that was very special. John Wooden through Pat williams--really came to life for me. I have seen first hand what a father and son relationship can be when love, kindess, courage, and strength are shown from a father to a son. It is up to the child to grow off of that wisdom and that is what John Wooden did. This book is beyond one learning to grow. This is about sharing with others. Coach did that his whole life, and he has proven that success comes in all walks of life. Basketball was the route he took, but so many young men and women are out there, ready to recieve his guidance. This book explains how to lead and communicate with people of all walks of life. For any person, any age this book will deliver exactly what you expect it will. Great author whom I have read many books, and one of the greatest basketball coaches. What a great combination. Read this book; the wisdom is out there, grab it, and run with it.

Children will gain insight about America's Christian roots.

Like the adult book of the same title, The Light and the Glory for Children examines evidence for America's Christian roots. The authors reveal a past that is not at all smooth. The challenges of settling this land and building a new nation are shown in their harsh reality. Equally, the faith that strengthened the people for these challenges is presented as inspiration for tomorrow's citizens and leaders. Review questions in the back of the book helped my children explore their own values and beliefs about their country. There could be no better way to raise responsible citizens than to have them investigate our Christian heritage through this book.

A must for American History

This is a great, well written History of America. Children love it, but best of all, it tells history accurately while filling in the gaps that a secular education edits out. Religion was an important part of everyday life for Columbus, Washington, Franklin. Secular education takes an atheistic viewpoint and cannot mention this, leaving huge gaps and partial truths. Now you and your children can learn the whole story. Again, a must for teaching grade school age kids about American History. This is our text book this year, companioned with the activity book.

This book is a must read for children to get a proper perspective of history. Public school textbooks will not reflect our Christian roots. Parents should read the regular version. My 9 year old granddaughter says this is her favorite book.

Excellent!

One of my grandchildren has been struggling a little with reading and is very frustrated because of how much better a reader his older brother is. He is only in the first grade and I wanted him to remember that he loves books.

This was perfect. He walked around reading jokes from the book and was just overjoyed. He loved the jokes, he loved reading them to people.

I laughed, I cried, I groaned

One of our Family Rules is to laugh.....a lot. And we take that 'rule' pretty seriously around here. So when I got this book I was pretty stoked to have some all new material to laugh with the kids. We've checked out books from the library but they've all been just 'so-so' and some of the jokes have been questionable to telling to kids.

The first section has a Q&A jokes like:
Q: Where did the general put his armies?
A: In his sleevies!
or
Q: What do you call four bullfighters in quicksand?
A: Quatro-sinko!

The kids have loved them. We've read a couple of pages during dinner and all giggled, groaned and laughed until we cried. I haven't laughed like that in a while. We haven't even made our way though the first of the three sections of the book but it has been great. I've loved telling these jokes to the kids because so many remind me of the kind I used to find on Popsicle sticks.

Many of the jokes rely on a play on words, or a similar sounding word to make it funny. That's been good to discuss with the kids because some we have to explain that there are different spellings of the words or different meanings with the same spelling.

The next two sections of the book have animal jokes and knock-knock jokes.

The only downside is that they can get corny so we only do a few pages at a time. But this is a great book for all ages.

We don’t laugh enough. Look at some of the pictures that are being posted on the social websites and you’ll see that people aren’t even smiling for the camera anymore. Rob Elliott saw the problem and figured out a way to fix it with his new book. Yes, the jokes are supposed to be for kids and they are. However that doesn’t mean that adults will not enjoy them also. After all being an adult only means that you are a taller kid. I think these jokes are priceless and if you don’t laugh through the book you need to check your pulse. Part One is Q&A Jokes, Part Two is Q&A Jokes using animals and Part Three is Knock Knock jokes. This book is great fun that the whole family will enjoy. It is also a great gift for friends and family so that they can laugh.
