From Booklist
As she continues her Blue Willow Brides series (Deeply Devoted, 2011), Brendan crafts what could easily be a stand-alone novel about late-nineteenth-century mail-order brides. Formerly betrothed to a fallen army officer, Greta Olsen recalls how her sister’s faith in God helped her as she, as did her sister, responds to an ad that will take Greta far from her remaining family to a land where men outnumber women five to one. The reader will quickly realize, however, that this is not your standard mail-order fare as two brides arrive for a would-be husband who is completely unaware of their reasons for coming to Black Hawk, Colorado. As this mix of interesting characters navigate the perplexing circumstances they now find themselves in, Brendan creates a delightful, gentle romance that is sure to appeal to fans of historical romance with a twist, and they will eagerly await the next installment. --Elizabeth Ponder
From the Back Cover
Two beautiful brides. One unsuspecting groom. Three weeks to figure it all out.
Greta Olsen arrives in Central City, Colorado, as a mail-order bride, expecting to marry Jess Gifford, the man she's come to know through his tender letters. But when she meets Cora Johnson, she discovers she's not the only bride waiting at the train station for Jess.
Already shocked to find they must compete for Jess's affection, the young women can hardly believe it when not Jess but his brother Zach picks them up from the station--and reveals that Jess knows nothing about any mail-order bride, let alone two. Will either bride make the match she hopes for?
Filled with surprises, misunderstandings, and tender romance, Twice Promised is the story of how two unlikely women become twice blessed.
"Twice Promised is another great love story by Maggie Brendan . . . with fast-paced plot twists as the characters find their way to true love."--Mary Connealy, author of Over the Edge, In Too Deep, and Out of Control

Maggie Brendan twists my heart into knots!
By Rosie
It isn't very easy to twist my heart into knots like Maggie Brendan did in Twice Promised.
This is my first read from Miss Brendan. It's a sweet mail-order bride romance tale set in the mid-west in 1888. But there's a problem. Another woman has answered the ad too. And the bridegroom didn't even know they were coming!
This is the first book I've read that I couldn't for certain figure out which woman would end up with which man. I knew the two whom I wanted to get married. But as the story went on we learn more about the character's personalities. You'll have to read the book to find that out, but let me just say I wasn't cheering for the pairings until close to the end...
Greta is my ultimate favorite character in this novel. She's sweet, yet she has some fire in her. She's a woman who has lost her loved one but is ready to move on. I really liked her. Oh, and Granny too.
To sum up, I've never read or watched a mail-order bride story. But I really liked this book. Miss Brendan gives us wonderful characters, many twists, and two sweet romances! I was glued to the pages until the very last. I look forward to see what Miss Brendan releases next. :-)

Uninspiring
By T. Wilsdorf
I loved the plot idea in this book but it was not what I had expected. I thought it would be through a misunderstanding that two brides would show up in town, not on purpose. The message conveyed was that it was a funny little stunt the brother Zach pulled, but in my opinion that's downright cruel that anyone would do that to two unsuspecting women with feelings and hopes for finding love...never mind the expense and effort they went to traveling to their destination. That was never really brought up, except in a passing comment by Cora asking for an apology, and Zach never did seem to find anything wrong with what he'd done. He treated the women like they were gift horses, telling his brother to choose between the two. Seriously? Even in that day and time, that would be a very disrespecting and demeaning way for a man to treat women. I didn't like him from the start, for doing that, he seemed very flippant and immature to me. I also found it hard to believe both women would just meekly agree to work in the store after finding out they'd been tricked, and being stashed together into some dirty miner's cabin, with bears around... yeah, that would go over with most women from the city. Don't you think at least one of them would decide to go back to where she came from instead of staying and playing second fiddle to the other woman? I really tried to give the story a chance but the characters just did not interest me and their plights did not hook me. There was no depth or passion in their dialogue or their introspection. Early on the reader should at least have curiosity about what evolves with the characters in a story, or ideally, care about them and be invested in the outcomes. I was bored, didn't care what happened. The scenes were difficult to read too, it was like watching a ping pong game with all of the back and forth with names, trying to keep track of who was who. I really think a lot more could have been done with that story.

Not as Good as Deeply Devoted but More Than Worthy of a Read
By Ashley Mott
I really enjoyed "Deeply Devoted," the first book in Maggie Brendan's "Blue Willow Brides" series, so I was delighted to check out this new volume. I was very curious to see how she would handle making this book unique in a trilogy focused on the concept of mail-order brides with a family affinity for blue willow dishes (also a love of mine).
Let me say this: Maggie did a great job of making this book different. It starts and progresses in a path nothing like the first book. However, by about mid-point in the book, I was wishing that it would not have departed quite so far. The first volume had intrigue woven into a story that had the two main leads, Catharine and Peter married. Having main characters wed, mostly happily, from the beginning of a Christian fiction novel is a rare twist that made later turmoil much more interesting and serious.
Slight revealing description of plot ahead, not really a spoiler but worthy of a mention:
This book dragged out the entire courtship for the entire book which made for cumbersome reading at parts. Sitcom episodes built around classic misunderstandings are bearable because they only last 22-25 minutes, but a book full of misunderstandings and people tip-toeing around and not saying what they mean gets old and becomes repetitive. It could have done with being a quarter of its length to ease the repetition or with having an additional angle built-in -- perhaps more time with Caleb - a secondary character who added a charming angle to the book.
I give the volume four stars because most of it was good, and the basic premise of this book was a fun twist on an oft explored topic in this genre. I generally love Maggie's books and look forward to reading the last book in the set (featuring the story of Anna!) when it is released.
