Excellent Contemporary Christian Romance
By Iola
When advertising executive Kate Sherwood and her grandmother, Sally Fuller, arrive at Rainbow’s End resort in the Texas Hill Country, it’s nothing like the beautiful Christian resort her grandmother had described. It’s not even like the brochure’s “faux-tography” (I like that word!). She meets Greg, who she thinks is the resort handyman, but soon finds out he’s another guest. So why is he repairing the cottages? Why is he even at Rainbow’s End?

We find out Greg’s secret background soon enough: he’s a Silicon Valley boy wonder who sold his majority share in an extremely successful software company for an obscene amount of money, and now he’s staying at Rainbow’s End while he works out what God wants him to do with his life. This initially caused me some concern, because the “Career Woman meets Secret Billionaire” concept had the potential to become a cheesy cliché.

It didn’t.

Yes, it seemed at first that Kate was the archetype of the driven career woman who resents the fact that she’s being made to spend a month at this run-down resort, at the expense possible of a much-desired promotion. And there was the potential for Greg to be little more than the software nerd he saw himself as, but Kate saw more in him. As a result, what could have been a cheesy romance turned into something more complex as Kate and Greg got to know each other, and subtly challenged each other to rethink their long-held beliefs about career (Kate) and family (Greg).

I’ve read a couple of Amanda Cabot’s historical romances, but At Bluebonnet Lake is her first contemporary novel. Not all authors can write both historical and contemporary fiction convincingly, but Amanda Cabot can, and I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading Firefly Valley, the sequel to At Bluebonnet Lake, when it releases next year.

Thanks to Revell and NetGalley for providing a free ebook for review.

Madison Avenue & Silicon Valley entwine in the Bluebonnet Belt
By Harold Wolf
At the decaying resort of Rainbow's End the pot of gold seems to be brimming over with more romance than money. Everyone that bumps into this former Christian-themed get away may leave with clinging chips of blistered paint or, just as likely, a heart smitten. If you enjoy romance, are betwixt teenage and 70-something years young, then you'll be enchanted and find a character or two to relate with in Amanda Cabot's "At Bluebonnet Lake."

At Rainbow's End, romances blossom faster than shingles can slide off a cabin roof. It has more couples pairing off than the lake's boathouse has oars. If sticky caramel corn kisses on top a Ferris wheel is "too sweet" a story for you, then find a gruesome murder mystery, BECAUSE chocolate pound cake sweet romance is what you get "At Bluebonnet Lake." The book even provides the recipe at the end.

"At Bluebonnet Lake" is the first of "Texas Crossroads" series. This romantic sojourn does include the proverbial antagonist. It is not all bluebonnets, hugs, and starry-eyed bliss; but those are the majority.
Amanda Cabot writes ripe romances.

Debut into Contemporary Romance is a Delight
By Sally McC
Amanda Cabot’s entrance into contemporary romance is an absolute delight to read. Although Kate and Greg are the main characters, there’s also a strong focus on Kate’s grandmother, Sally, who also has a life changing experience in Texas Hill Country. (Side note: I always find it a little weird to find my given name used as a character name in a novel.) Rainbow’s End is a resort that is a little past its prime, but Cabot’s description of it meant that I could see the potential in it from the start. The romance between the central characters is the main theme, but it’s how they interact with the locals that caught my interest. These are people who rely on the local economy to survive, something that many of us can probably relate to. Watch out for young Fiona, who is determined to find a new daddy and points out various men as possibilities for her widowed mother. Not even Greg can escape her eye!

At Bluebonnet Lake is a breezy read, although not without its dramatic elements. There are characters to both like and dislike, and a message about following both God and your heart.

The potential of the Rainbow’s End resort made it a place I wanted to revisit. I’m happy to say that book two of the Texas Crossroads series is due out next spring. It’s called In Firefly Valley and features two characters that didn’t appear in At Bluebonnet Lake but were mentioned. They both have a connection to Rainbow’s End through those that make it their home.

Thank you to Revell for my complimentary copy of At Bluebonnet Lake, which I received in exchange for an honest review.
