and the feeling of just not being good enough. I know I have
By Stacy64
I was really excited to get Leeana Tankersley's new book, Breathing Room; Letting Go so You Can Fully Live from Revell Books, a division of Baker Publishing. Surely every woman has at one time or another struggled with feelings of inadequacy, self-condemnation, and the feeling of just not being good enough. I know I have, so this was going to be a good read and I'd learn how to break free of the past, ignore the lies and live the life of abundance that God has waiting for each one of us.

Leeana is a beautiful young woman, the mother of three adorable children and the wife of a Navy SEAL team member. I wanted to like this book. I wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, that didn't turn out to be the case. If you want to feel better about yourself and know that everything about you is a-okay, then you're going to love this book. It definitely feels like sitting down with a friend for a long, loving chat over a cup of tea. It is steeped in approval and encouragement and that's what we're looking for, right?

The problem for me was who Tankersley seemed to be getting approval from. Billed as a Christian book, God seems to have a very secondary role. If you want fed pop psychology and easy answers then you'll find it here. If you want sound scripture-based answers you will be disappointed. The author does indeed mention God, though I'm not sure it's the God of the Bible, because she has no qualms about referring to a "higher power" or "the source."

I honestly had a lot of issues with the book. I'm a devout Christian and student of the Bible. I expected a "Christian" book to be filled with biblical references and you just won't find that in Breathing Room. Tankersley cites bible stories, putting her own spin on them, not quoting actual scripture. She does quote Dr. Seuss, Carl Jung, Stephen King and Richard Pryor among others. In other instances she justifies her words by stating "I feel that." There's nothing scriptural to back up her feelings.

So many things were red flags to me and went against my beliefs, verging on or marching boldly into the territory of "New Age." In the very beginning she refers to us as being in a game we can't win, a game we're playing against ourselves, a game where our inner voices tell us lies. The "game" we are playing is actually a war, a war against Satan and his forces and it is he who fills our heads with lies. We have to know who the enemy really is to defeat him.

Tankersley later talks about "eating the shadow" or the things about ourselves that torment us. She shares the words of a friend who advises "Go into the kitchen and get out a big spoon and think about all the things you're trying to outrun in yourself, and just heap them into your mouth. See the reintegration as nourishment, fulfilling your soul hunger." What?? The only thing that should fulfill the "soul hunger" of anyone, let alone someone claiming to be a Christian, is Jesus.

I could go on and on with examples from the book. At times Tankersley gets it right, but for the most part the Truth is missing, buried under pop psychology, New Age lies, and just plain fluff. If you want to feel better about yourself and you don't care how you get there or what you do to your walk with the real God of Heaven then this book certainly will fill the bill. Temporarily. To me it is just one more example of how modern Christianity has allowed the world's thinking to become its thinking.

I'm very sorry, but I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to anyone.

Just Breathe

On the surface, Breathing Room wonderfully written book -written by a young, overwhelmed mom – and her need to learn how to wake up every morning and hold on for whatever is coming her way and to just breathe through her life. This is her story, but though I am not a young, overwhelmed mom and I found myself within her story. I got it… and she gets it.

Life can grab us by the throat and never let go. It can drag us down to a place that feels like there is nowhere to go… not even Up. And then there is the secret (page 48). The secret is to get up every morning and, with intention, step into the broad grace we have been offered for this mercies-are-new-day. And then do it again tomorrow. We don’t get over being human. We don’t arrive. We don’t reach mastery. We don’t graduate in any way. We show up and participate day after day. (Emphasis mine)

Be prepared, once you begin reading this story… it will not let you go until you have read and savored every word and let its’ peace permeate down into your own life. Thank you Ms. Tankersley for sharing your story with us.

Learning to let go in order to live fully
By Brenda C
Letting go so you can fully live sounds easy but probably is one of the hardest things to do. With Breathing Room Leeana Tankersley provides personal insight into how we can let go of the hurts and pain that drag us down. She certainly hit the nail on the head when she describes how we often care more about how things look on the outside rather than how things feel on the inside. Catchy chapter titles really drew me in, but it was the down to earth easy to connect with stories that Ms. Tankersley shared that kept me reading. Often laced with humor the author shares her ups and downs and within those stories snippets of guidance that encourage and remind that we have to let go of the things that hold us down in order to find inner peace. While I enjoyed the stories the author shared, I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't a lot of scriptural reference which is something I always look for in self help books. Overall the personal stories will inspire and encourage readers to let go of the issues that may be holding them back from living life fully.
