"Every name of God revealed in the Bible shows us something about His character and His ways. As the multiple facets of a cut diamond combine to reflect its brilliance, the names and attributes of God combine to reveal the transcendence of His nature and the glory of His ways," Ava Pennington writes in her book, "Daily Reflections on the Names of God."
At three hundred and eighty-four pages, this paperback book is targeted toward those looking for a devotional in regard to the names and attributes of God. Using mainly the New American Standard version of the Bible, other versions included are God's Word, King James, The Message, New International, and New Living Translation that covers one hundred and twenty two names devoted to the Almighty.
After an acknowledgement page, the introduction explains the book has three different aspects dedicated to the names of God: those that show how and why God describes Himself, those that focus on how we should apply them to our lives, and those that teach us how to approach others about Him.
With arrow symbols at the top of each page designating which aspect the name will be described, the author lists the theme along with Bible verses to look up. The main portion of the page is several paragraphs dedicated to the theme, mostly mentioning Scriptural application but sometimes the writer's personal experiences.
A short italicize prayer is included on each page along with a personal applicable question for the reader to consider. Besides an alphabetical index at the back, there is a Scriptural one.
Since this yearly devotional covers three hundred and sixty-six days' topics, there are three dedicated to each name of God mentioned such as Comforter, Friend, Holy, Jealous, Living Water, Omnipotent, Merciful, Pure, Rock, Savior, and Truth. Also listed are Hebrew names such as Elohim, El Elyon, El Shaddai, Yahweh Jireh, Yahweh Shalom and Yahweh Rohi.
Many names have two of the three aspects that focus on applying them to our lives so the reader can easily research and study one name. An example is Forgiver: the page titled "Forgiven, Not Forgotten" reiterates that God totally forgives us but does not forget us. "Forgiving Myself" is a reminder that God's grace allows us to forgive ourselves. In "Pass It On" we need to forgive others.
With daily Scripture reading included, this devotional would be a good way to concentrate on God's names and attributes as we grow closer to Him.

awesome study!

What an awesome daily devotional! If you have ever wanted to study all the names of God, then look no further. The daily devotional is short enough to read without rushing and in depth enough to gain a new understanding of the name it is highlighting. I also love how it will devote a couple days (devotionals) to a name, so you can get a better feel for it more than one day would allow. Very thoughtfully written and worded. In the back there is even an alphabetical listing of the names and pages to find the devotional that corresponds to the name. I am loving having this as my daily routine! book received from bookfun.org for honest review.

I am a huge fan of daily devotionals, you may already know that. Some of my favorites are ones that I read for years and years -- like Jesus Calling, My Utmost for His Highest, At the Feet of Jesus...and now one of my new favorites is "Daily Reflections on the Names of God".
Ava Pennington has packed in the meat and potatoes on each day in a way that doesn't overwhelm you but simply reaches in and digs a little deeper. Knowing the names of God and allowing those names to draw you closer to Him while also uncovering some new insights and nuggets that you may have never noticed before.
With little symbols on the top of each page they guide you to look at each name or attribute of God in the devotional that day by looking "up", looking "in" or looking "out". Each day is ready for you to sit and soak in while allowing you to lean in to who God really is. This devotional is sure to be one that I read over and over again for many years.
On a personal note, I just have to mention that not only is this devotional rich with goodness, grace and mercy...but so is the author, Ava Pennington. She sent me this book almost two years ago and through various rabbit trails and delays I am just not posting the review and I'm doing so not because I "have to" but because as a woman in ministry and as a writer/speaker myself I could not let this sweet little gem of a book go by unnoticed, nor could I let the incredible author go unnoticed as well. Thank you thank you thank you Ava for your grace. You are a true gem! ~ Melissa
