Another gem by Elisabeth Elliot!

Elisabeth Elliot writes to her nephew Pete and lays out a methodical, yet insightful and personal case study of masculinity as modeled after the life of Jesus Christ. She shares many stories about her first husband, Jim Elliot, as well as other people she has counseled or known. I find her writing deep with conviction, scripturally sound and challenging. I would recommend this book to any man wanting to understand his earthly purpose and calling in the light of his relationship with Christ. It's also an excellent book for Christian women who want to understand their role as it relates to the men in their lives.

A Must-Read

Still single but longing for a wife, I read "The Mark of a Man" just after my fortieth birthday. This book clarified and reaffirmed what I've come to believe over fifteen years of studying the Bible.
There are forty-four very short, concise, easy-to-read chapters. The first twenty chapters examine and clarify the wonderful differences God created between men and women. They focus more on what is a woman than what is a man. The last twenty-four chapters clarify God's intent for men in particular. Mrs. Elliot is Biblically sound. She is unabashedly, refreshingly, and at times humorously non-"feminist" -- while simultaneously being absolutely pro-woman and undeniably feminine. Her thoughts about gender roles may be regarded by some as old-fashioned, but in actuality, they are timeless. When men and women conduct their lives according to the principles Mrs. Elliot expounds, the world will be a more peaceful, harmonious place. This book is insightful and refreshing; a delight to read.
As a reviewer of the earlier edition said, I also wanted to write Mrs. Elliot to thank her for this excellent work. I, too, felt like she was my aunt or my grandmother who sat me down and lovingly taught me what God expects of men in their relationships with women.
I wish I had read "The Mark of a Man" when I was a teenager or in my early twenties.
I regard this to be one of the best books I have ever read. I highly recommend this book for men and women, young and old alike.

Great Encouragement for Young Men

Elisabeth Elliot is a treasure from a bygone era, although she still lives and writes in ours. Her active, living faith shapes her life in a profound way, and her traditional, biblical view of manhood and womanhood hearken back to a time before modern feminism.
Men and women steeped in feminism and liberal equality will not enjoy The Mark of a Man, but traditional Christians with a complementarian view of the sexes will find a treasure in its pages.
Mrs. Elliot wrote this book to her nephew Pete, a young man in college. She wrote it because, "The world cries for men who are strong: strong in conviction, strong to lead, to stand, to suffer." She believes deeply that when "men and women accept the sexual difference and enjoy it, they put color and design and variety into life." Each short chapter punctuates that theme, identifying a way in which young men can honor God with their masculinity.
There are a few things this book is not. First, it is not a treatise. The chapters are meant as short reflections and encouragements, not as exhaustive studies. There is no new message in these pages; the book focuses on encouraging the reader, not on informing him. Second, this book is not about sex. While Mrs. Elliot discusses the topic -- particularly to contrast loving your wife with the world's view of making love -- sex is dealt with only in passing. Finally, Mrs. Elliot does not provide a list of action steps; the book requires the reader to employ his imagination in implementing its themes.
I was deeply heartened by Mrs. Elliot's view of manhood, and her willingness to stand on the Scriptural understanding of masculinity and femininity encouraged me.
The Mark of a Man is best suited to young, unmarried men desirous of growing into godly men worthy of marriage. However, I also found it to be a great reminder of all that God calls men to be, regardless of their age or marital status. Egalitarians and feminists will despise Mrs. Elliot for her traditional view of men and women, but she would ask them to remember that "tradition" means only that an idea has been accepted by two millennia of Christianity. Do not be too quick to discard what the Church has held dear.
