From Sea to Shining Sea for Young Readers tells America's story during its first fifty years. These were the days of Benjamin Franklin and Daniel Boone, Francis Asbury and Charles Finney, Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston. During these years Conestoga wagons and circuit riders became famous, Indian wars and slavery were major concerns, and the Louisiana Purchase and the Oregon Trail expanded American boundaries from sea to shining sea. But God was also at work in the young nation, giving its settlers opportunities to shape its history and to be His people.
This book brings to life the exciting era between 1787 and 1837 for young readers ages 9 to 12. Study questions and answers for each chapter and a glossary of terms are included.
Peter Marshall (1940-2010), a graduate of Yale University and Princeton Theological Seminary, was a nationally recognized speaker on America's Christian heritage.
David Manuel is the author or coauthor of several books, including Like a Mighty River and The Jesus Factor. He is a graduate of Yale University and lives in Massachusetts.
Anna Wilson Fishel trained in law and was involved in government work. She is a published adapter and author of books for children and young adults.
About the Author

Loved it!

Great book for students of all ages. One of my high schoolers struggles in reading so this book, along with the two others in the series, was especially nice because the font is bigger, the chapters are not long, and the questions help with what she just read. I believe these books are for younger readers but the content is still good for a high schooler as well. My high schooler, who does not struggle in reading, read them the summer before her Junior year in high school when students take American History. She loved them because they were a quick read, helped preview the year, gave her a clearer understanding and a better comprehension of the class. I believe a student coming out of 7th grade and going into 8th grade can benefit from reading these books b/c in 8th grade they take American History as well. Although, anytime during their 8th grade year would be great. I do however recommend the main book, The Light and the Glory, for more advanced minds and readers. It reaches more in depth and explains more of the history where other history books today have left out.

Terribly written, inaccurate.

Our 12 year old received a few of these in the series as gifts. Hopeful that they would be interesting histories, I cracked one open myself. NOPE. TERRIBLE.
It's one thing to want to learn about history from a Christian perspective, but these books were a HUGE disappointment. I'm appalled at how historically inaccurate they are. Literally, I think the author just made stuff up! It's written as if the author's fictitious descriptions of people and places are factually correct when there is no way he could have known, for example, what a pirate was wearing when they traded slaves for food... There's also a TON of quoted language that is entirely fabricated, and the quotes that aren't fabricated are quoted in ways to completely misconstrue and manipulate the original statements (LOTS ... of ellipses). If you are a homeschooler or history enthusiast who ONLY cares about how many times someone can attribute every single event to God's will being fulfilled, then you might like these.
But if you want to learn about History, avoid these like the plague. They are mostly fiction. I recommend Howard Zinn's Young People's History of the United States: It's accurate, exposes harsh realities of how our country was won and leaves speculation about God's involvement to a minimum.

Great for homeschooling families. This is a perfect addition to our history library. Make sure you look to see if you have the young readers edition or 13 and up edition.
